My parents are funny, really

I love my parents (my dad and step mom) but just some of the things they do have me questioning their sanity.

We have a toy poodle, who's name is Jake. He's pretty spoiled and has a huge Napoleonic complex. He's the size of a large cat yet he apparently thinks he's the size of a house with the way he barks or acts.

What's funny is my parents speak to Jake as if he has a mastery of the English language equivalent to about a 5th grade reading level.

He understands the word Jake quite well but I don't think he understands the phrases they utter to him. They don't say things simply like “Jake NO!”. It's “Jake, stop it” “Jake, quit it” or my personal favorite “Jake, stop humping the cat”. The last time I checked, Jake's natural language isn't English. I don't here him say “Go away” instead of a bark, so I honestly don't think he'll grasp the English language in the capacity they seem to think he's already capable of. Just because you feed him people food, it won't turn him into some English wiz, nor will it make him human. He may also seemingly act like a small child, but it still doesn't suggest that he's mastered the English language.

This is just an observation I've made. I hope they know that Jake isn't that skilled in human languages but sometimes I question it.
