FredNUG is pleased to announce our June speaker will be Pete Brown. Pete was one of FredNUG’s first speakers when the group started and we’re very happy to have him visiting us again to present on Silverlight! On June 15th @ 6:30 PM, we’ll start with a Visual Studio 2010 Launch with pizza, swag and a presentation about what makes Visual Studio 2010 great. Then, starting at 7 PM, Pete Brown will present “What’s New in Silverlight 4.” It looks like an evening filled with newness!

Speaker Bio:

Pete Brown is a Senior Program Manager with Microsoft on the developer community team led by Scott Hanselman, as well as a former Microsoft Silverlight MVP, INETA speaker, and RIA Architect for Applied Information Sciences, where he worked for over 13 years. Pete's focus at Microsoft is the community around client application development (WPF, Silverlight, Windows Phone, Surface, Windows Forms, C++, Native Windows API and more).

From his first sprite graphics and custom character sets on the Commodore 64 to 3d modeling and design through to Silverlight, Surface, XNA, and WPF, Pete has always had a deep interest in programming, design, and user experience. His involvement in Silverlight goes back to the Silverlight 1.1 alpha application that he co-wrote and put into production in July 2007. Pete has been programming for fun since 1984, and professionally since 1992.

With the release of Windows 7, many developers might be looking to take advantage of the features Windows 7 offers. This presentation offers attendees a broad overview of the Windows API Code Pack, which is a managed library for .NET developers to use for accessing some of the underlying functionality of Windows that was typically reserved for Interop fans. Topics and demos include Windows 7 taskbar functionality, Task dialogs, Libraries support, and more.

Speaker Bio:

Kevin Griffin is a .NET Developer for Antech Systems, located in Chesapeake, VA. He's an ASPInsider and the leader of the Hampton Roads .NET Users Group. Additionally, he serves as an INETA mentor for the state of Virginia. Often, he can be found speaking at or attending other local user group meetings or code camps. He enjoys working with new technology, and consistently works on being a better developer and building the best software he can.

Getting Started with Entity Framework 4

With .Net 3.5 Microsoft release Linq to Sql and with .Net 3.5 SP1 came the Entity Framework, both powerful ORM tools leveraging Linq technology. Entity Framework v1, while usable, was definitely lacking some important features and the Entity Framework team delivered with version 4 coming with Visual Studio 2010. In this session we will look at Entity Framework 4 from the ground level and you will get a solid understanding of it basic principles. We will also go through all of the new features in Entity Framework 4 and see how far it’s come since the initial release. If you’ve never taken a look at Entity Framework, now is the time as version 4 is the real deal.

Speaker Bio: Dane Morgridge has been a developer for 9+ years and has worked with .Net & C# since the first public beta. His current passions are Entity Framework, WPF, WCF, Silverlight and LINQ and is currently a Microsoft MVP for Data Platform Development. He works mostly with C#, but is also a big fan of whatever new technology he happens to come across. In addition to software development, he is the host of the Community Megaphone Podcast and also enjoys dabbling in graphic design, video special effects and hockey. When not with his family he is usually learning some new technology or working on some side projects. He is currently working as the Development Manager & Architect at Roska Digital in Montgomeryville, PA. FredNUG is pleased to announce that we have a great presenter lined up to start out 2010. After enjoying some pizza and beverages while hearing what the Microsoft New Efficiency is all about. David Makogon will present an overview of Silverlight 4 with a sprinkle of RIA Services. It will be great to hear what’s being added to the Silverlight bag of tricks. Come join us on the 19th and enjoy some food, Silverlight 4 knowledge and swag!

We’ll also be continuing our canned food drive. Despite the holidays being over, the local food banks still need help. Anyone bringing canned food items will be entered into a special drawing for a licensed copy of Windows 7.

Frederick .NET User Group December Meeting

Considering doing a presentation at an upcoming code camp or user group in the spring?

Have a really interesting .NET-related topic that you would like to share with other developers?

Then come to this month’s Frederick .NET User Group meeting and present your stuff!

FredNUG is mixing things up a bit this month. On December 15th, we’ll start with pizza and social networking at 6:30 PM. Then, starting at 7 PM, we’ll start our “15 Minutes of Fame” presentations. Anyone interested in presenting their favorite .NET topic should contact me about getting on the schedule. Hopefully, we will get a nice mix of topics that will generate some nice discussion.

We’re also doing a food drive for the local food bank to help folks around the holidays. If we can get a minimum of 50 items, we’ll raffle a license of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for those attendees donating the food items.

Then, starting at 7 PM, John Baird will present “Building Silverlight LOB Apps.” With so many software development teams trying to make the switch from Winforms to WPF/Silverlight, I’m sure this talk will be very useful and informative.

Speaker Bio: John Baird began his computer programming career while in the US Navy. In 1982, he helped form and direct the first PC-based computer processing department for training and manpower in the Department of Defense. After leaving the military in 1988, John began a varied career as a consultant developing business applications ranging from computer-based training to vertical market software for resellers.

Today, John is working for the industry leader in financial software for fund administration. John was recently awarded MVP status for device application development.

Wow! Last month’s meeting was terrific! Claudio Lassala’s presentation rocked. Also, the format of the meeting worked so well we’re going to stick with it for the Wednesday, October 28th meeting.

This month FredNUG is shaking things up a bit! Instead of meeting on our traditional 4th Wednesday of the month, we’re moving the meeting to Tuesday, September 22. Also, instead of having an intro talk, we’re doing pizza from 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM. Then, starting at 7 PM, INETA Speaker Claudio Lassala will present on Refactoring, Patterns, new language features, code quality, and more! This sounds like a topic that all .NET developers can benefit.

Frederick .NET User Group August Meeting

The next Frederick .NET User Group (FredNUG) meeting will be Wednesday, August 26th at the Urbana Regional Library. At the meeting, we’ll recap the previous meeting’s bot bash code challenge. Since the last meeting, several members have begun improving their bots. During the recap, we’ll provide and overview of the challenge for those folks who missed the July meeting and then see whose bot can accumulate the most wins. Following a break for pizza, a little bit of social networking and a demo from the meeting’s sponsor eSymmetrix, Steve Michelotti will present a session on LINQ to SQL in N-Tier Applications.

Main Topic Description: Creating an N-Tiered design with clear “separation of concerns” in crucial to successful solutions. However, there have been considerable misconceptions that using LINQ essentially means putting SQL statements directly in the code behinds of web pages. This presentation will create a tiered application from the ground up in order to debunk this misconception. The presentation tier for the application which will be built “on the fly” will not have any knowledge that LINQ is even being used behind the scenes in the data layer. Rather than simple CRUD operations on a single row, the presentation will highlight real-world scenarios with complex objects (e.g., parent/child relationships). The presentation will first show out of the box LINQ auto-generated SQL and then, in minutes, switch to all stored procedures in order to examine the differences. Throughout the talk, the “gotchas” for building N-Tiered LINQ applications will be presented with their appropriate solutions.

Speaker Bio: Steve Michelotti, MSCD, MCPD, MCT is a consultant for Applied Information Sciences. He has consulted at Advertising.com/AOL where he was the Tech Lead for one of the highest volume .NET applications in the world. He is a frequent presenter at developer user groups and Code Camps in the Maryland area.
