My Projects

This blog is moooooooving....

There is no better time to start a new blog than the start of a new year. My interest in .NET has been waning for a while now. I know GWB is a technology community, not just a .NET community but I think it best to have my own site and the like. I want to thank Jeff Julian and John Alexander for the outstanding community and allowing me to set up shop here. Keep in touch. Here is my new blog

Yes, I am a slacker

I am aghast at my lack of posts lately but I have a few things going on that are taking most of my time up. NTeam - We are really moving along. The project design is almost all done and the coding is about to commence. I love design and would not dare tackle a project of this size without some semblance of a goal in mind but I can truly understand why some of the great minds out there really loathe big design up front. We have NOT went at NTeam with BDUF but sometimes it seems that way. I guess the...

Interesting SOA Approach

Fellow NTeamer Ron Buckton passed this link from Rocky Lhotka concerning Message-based WebMethod overloading as a possible approach for the NTeam architecture and I really like the idea. Most importantly, it works. My only complaint is the same one Rocky brings up: it is not as clean as I would like. There is also an accompanying article from Bill Wagner. Unfortuanately, there was no follow-up on Wagner's initial post as promised that I could find...

The NTeam Front Five

During an NTeam group chat tonight, we got sidetracked and started talking size. We could form a decent NFL front line....almost. No names, though, I don't want a letter bomb. Do guys really care about that crap? 6'7” 282 <- Me 6'4“ 250 6'2“ 250 6'3“ 270 6'2 270 Some one proposed our new motto as 'NTeam, we are coming to eat you.' That may not be the right message to send but you get the idea...

NTeam Mentioned in June 15th Edition of SD Times

You can download the issue here (pdf). Page 25. It is more of a VSTS/James Avery article but NTeam is mentioned at the end. Apparantly, and I didn't know this, NTeam is based on James Avery's tool list. I am glad someone told me. Also, I am glad that the reporter talked to the project team before making a huge jack*ss out of herself

Another FireFox Vulnerability

Disclaimer: I am an avid user of FireFox.I am kinda tired of updating FireFox twice a week. It is a great product but the arrogant idiots who claimed FireFox is secure are just that: idiots. Did you really think that Microsoft was the only software company in the world writing vulnerable applications? At least with IE, I don't get bugged every other day to fix a critical flaw.Alas, I digress. Here is the link detailing the vulnerability: here...

EntLib vs Build Your Own

The NTeam group is struggling with using EntLib vs. building our own framework. The EntLib is impossibly large and seems to take up 20-30mb of RAM but using it would save a massive amount of time. I have heard enough stories on why not to use it. Anyone have any success stories? Surely there are some people using it with great results. Drop me a line if you are. The blocks that we have ruled out are Data and Logging. We will definitely not be using these. We are using Codus for data and Log4NET for...

What do your workitems look like?

We are trying to cover all the bases for what we should include in workitems for NTeam. If you have a different process, please send them via email. We are mostly looking for activities that we haven't considered before. I have included an example below.Issue AssignmentAlert developerEstimate workCheck out filesCorrect problemEnforce coding standardsBuild solutionPerform unit testsCheck-inAdvance issue to the next state...

What NTeam will produce

It has been a long process determining what we have to build for the first release. It is also more complicated than I had originally thought. When I look at a segment, I use the following criteria when evaluating existing os projects:What product is most popularWhat product offers the most functionalityHow easy it will be to integrate the product into NTeamHow much work is involved in reproducing the productWhat license the product is bound to.As an example, take NCover using this criteria. NCover...
