Whatever happened to IE subscription services?

Does any one know? There are a slew of pages that I don't want to have to check manually to stay abreast of but that I want to read any new content posted there. I would love to be alerted when they are updated but I can't afford a personal assistant. I think they were called Channels in IE. Anything on the market like this for FireFox? IE?
