Joel Spolskys Bionic Office

Okay, so it's not really news, but I stumbled across this excellent post about the office design of Fog Creek Software, Joels company.

Two things came to mind:

1) I wanna work there!
and
2) It's a fantastic filosophy to have as an employer, that the work space actually matters. Not only for those working in it, but also when having to find new employees. There's nothing new about the everyday effect that our surroundings have on us, but in the software industry (and many other industries), it tends not to be prioritized much. That's a damn shame, considering how well it could be done, and how much it could potentially do for you.

We (EnGraph) just got a new office. It looks nothing like that though!

Hi Tim,

Congrats on the new office! I guess office design also comes down to the type of company you're at - where I work, 200 employees are crammed together in a far too small building. But the building means a lot to us, so we probably won't be moving anywhere anytime soon :-/

And only two of those 200 people are software developers, so I guess redesigning our office to look and feel like Joels would be slightly overkill!
