Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

I have a new Dell notebook with wide screen display at work (dell latitude d810 running on ati radeon mobility X600). This notebook
was shipped with default 120 dpi font size to make the fonts more readable (wide screen display is really cool, but now and than you want to read something on it as well ;-).

Anyway, if you use the default dell settings you may experience the problem with blurry images in Internet Explorer. This effect is due to the automatic scaling in IE6 and above. IE tries to resize the images so that everything looks the same as when everything is at smaller dpi, but does a terrible job at it, resulting in blurry and unreadable images.

Change the following registry setting from 1 to 0 in order to disable this "feature":

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\UseHR

[1] Adjusting Scale to Higher DPI Screens (MSDN)

I also have the 810 and noticed the blurry images in IE.
Switching back 96dpi makes text so small, that reading it is very difficult.

I'll try your suggestion later. Hope this helps. 1/10/2006 6:47 AM | Louis Haussknecht

Tried resetting the scaling, but this did not help. Instead, I reset the font size to Normal(96 dpi), which worked. 4/27/2006 1:45 AM | Trevor

# re: Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

This worked perfectly, but I didn't know exactly how to do the registry edit at first (Start>Run>Regedit then follow to HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software> Microsoft > Internet Explorer >Main and double click on the UserHR and change the 1 to 0)

# re: Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

THANK YOU! This has plauged me forever, but I never got around to doing much research on it because I always use Firefox. I just had to debug a site in IE though and was fed up that the images were still displaying wrong. The registry edit you suggested fixed it. Awesome! Even though this post is two years old, it still helped me out! :) 3/7/2008 6:18 PM | Lynn

# re: Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

Oh my! I love you!

Ever since I was fool enough to update my IE to version 7.0, it's had those hideous blurry images. Fortunately, I tend to use Firefox for just about everything... but I'm so thrilled to have that finally resolved.

Thanks! 3/8/2008 8:30 AM | Jordan

# re: Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

if you don't have UseHR in your registry, right-click and add it. Select New - DWORD. Then modify it so the name reads UseHR (correct case and spelling a must!) then you can change the value to 1 or 0. 10/31/2008 6:33 PM | steve

# re: Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

for those of you who don't see the UserHR options, it's b/c you have to click on main and then on the right hand side click on UserHR. I was looking for a subfolder at first too. It worked, but it just seems to make things smaller and took about 1 1/2 inches off the left and right margin. Thanks for the remedy though. 12/9/2009 4:48 PM | Coco

# re: Blurry Images in IE on Wide Screen Dell Notebook

Problem is most likely that you are viewing the page in zoomed in mode. In Internet Explorer, look down on the right hand corner, should say 100%, if it doesnt adjust. In Mozilla Firefox, press CTRL+0 (thats a zero). 7/26/2010 2:28 PM | Doktor Dax
