Terrorists win!

Everybody seems to ignore it, but we have now given terrorists a very bad signal:
Because of the attacks in Spain, the Partido Popular has lost the elections.
This must be the highest achievement possible for a terrorist organization: Causing a regime change.
Why do we go on giving these encouraging signals to terrorists?
Furthermore, why is this attack considered so much more important than for example the earthquake in Iran, where 200 times more people were killed? This attention is part of the reason why this happens.
It is also horrible to see that those same politicians who created a climate that encourages terrorism stand first in line to say how much they support the victims and regret what has happened. But changing their politics? No, don't think so...

Gravatar Maybe if you put a refrendum against earthquakes in Spain they would have voted that down as well? 3/15/2004 4:03 PM | Rj

Gravatar Henk,

Blaming anyone but the terrorists is a cop-out. You encourage the terrorists by bending to their will. You discourage a terrorist by killing them!

Rj, nice one on the referendum! Maybe we encourage earthquakes by living on the land? 3/15/2004 5:54 PM | Brian

Gravatar I 1000% agree. And Spain pulling their troops out of Iraq is even more encouragment to the terrorists and pretty much amounts to Spain putting their heads in the sand. I have never understood how a government can think that running and hiding or ignoring the propblem of the fanatic terrorists will make the problem go away. The terrorists hate everyone who does not agree with them...period. It does not matter if you fight them or put your hands in your pockets...sooner or later the terrorists will attack you, not because of your "association" with the US, but because because they HATE everyone who does not subscribe to their twisted view of the world. 3/15/2004 7:07 PM | d

Gravatar Brian, thanks for backing me up.
This was exactly my point:
You encourage the terrorists by bending to their will.
As in changing the regimes because of a terrorist attack.
I don't think however that it's realistic to think you can kill them all. 3/15/2004 7:11 PM | Henk Devos

Gravatar Henk,

It doesn't mean we can't try. Just like crime in every country, you cannot hope to totally stop it but you can work so that it becomes a negligible to the society as a whole.

I would not call Spain a "regime". It's government is democratically elected. So there is hope.... 3/15/2004 7:18 PM | Brian
