Henk Devos Henk's Random Thoughts

The world is filled with cells.
These cells are the basic building blocks of life.
The cells are themselved complex structures with molecules and smaller cells that work together in synergy, each part carrying out a specific task, so that the cell can perform its tasks as a whole.

Cells live together in large colonies.
These colonies are commonly known as humans.
The cells work together in synergy, each performing a specific task, so that the colony can perform its tasks as a whole.

Colonies of cells (humans) live together in large colonies.
These colonies are commonly known as societies.
The humans work together in synergy, each performing a specific task, so that the colony can perform its tasks as a whole, such as building cell phones.

Colonies of colonies of cells are capable of building cell phones.
Yet no single cell knows how to build a cell phone.
How is this possible?

You can not explain how cell phones are built by looking at individual cells that participate in the process.
Instead, you have to look at the right level of abstraction to understand a part of the process.
Just the same, you can only understand how a cell phone works by studying them at different levels of abstraction.
