Does anybody know how to install Kubuntu 6.10 in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007?

The problem is that Ubuntu starts with the color depth to 24-bits per pixel, which is not supported by Virtual PC 2004 and Virtual PC 2007, therefore some manual steps need to be taken before being able to install and configure Ubuntu in Virtual PC. I have tried several things like changing the boot options by including VGA=771 and the steps outlined in the Community Docs for "How to - Configure Ubuntu for Microsoft Virtual PC". The problem is that when I choose to start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode the graphics are still messed up and when I choose the option "Start or Install Ubuntu" for some reason it does not fully boot.

Is there anybody out there that managed in installing Kubuntu 6.10 in Virtual PC 2007? Also, why is there still no support for a color depth of at least 24-bits per pixel in VPC 2007?

Gravatar Boot from cd or iso, when you get to the messy windows enviroment hit CTRL + ALT + F1 to get to command prompt.

Enter sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
then press enter to get threw the xserver interface defaults.

The last choice will be to change the color depth. select 16 press enter. You will be dump into the command line again. Press CTRL+ALT+F7 then CTRL+ALT+Backspace. Done! 12/7/2007 2:34 PM | Chris

Gravatar I was really puzzled. Tried a lot of things including the text mode.

But the problem was my CD never displayed the option to install in text mode no matter which option I select. It seems there is no option in my CD to install in text mode.

Alternatively I tried a lot other commnads like "sudo sed -e 's/DefaultDepth.*24/DefaultDepth 16/g' -i /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and "cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf" but nothing worked.

But this option was the perfect one and finally it worked to perfection.

Thanks a lot for your help.
This is the first time I'll be seeing Ubuntu installation.
