After being so frustrated about the previous Windows Vista build I decided to give the Pre-RC1 build (build # 5536) another shot especially after reading so many positive comments on many blogs considering the performance of Microsoft newest Windows platform. I wish that I could say that Windows Vista rocks but instead I got even more frustrated about it than before.
First of all the installation was indeed pretty fast. From inserting the DVD to the first real boot of Windows it took about 20 minutes, which is by far the fastest installation on my machine. Something that I have noted is that you have to choose your regional settings before you have to enter the product key. Because I have a Dutch (Belgian) keyboard layout I choose the correct layout, then on the next screen you have to enter the product key. This is the first time to my knowledge that the keyboard scheme does not switch from QWERTY to AZERTY.
After my first boot in Windows Vista I received the following error:

I tried this a couple of times over and over again. That's it for me, if this is the kind of stability people are talking about I guess I will stick to Windows XP for a while. Not even mentioning that I still have to disable SLI (Scalable Link Interface) in my BIOS to even be able to boot Vista. This is something I have reported since the early builds but I guess that I am just a little fish in a big big ocean.
My hardware specs:
- ASUS A8N-SLI Motherboard
- 2 x MSI GeForce 6800GX
- 2 x 1024 MB Corsair XMS DDR
- AMD Athlon X2 64 3800
