Windows Vista's ActiveX Installer Service not working yet
I have been playing around with the latest Windows Vista builds and I have written an article on the ActiveX Installer Service but I am not able to complete the article because apparently it doesn't work yet. My guess is that the problem lies within Internet Explorer as it needs some adjustments to work correctly with the ActiveX Installer Service. I really hope that this feature makes RC1 but chances are odd. What is the ActiveX Installer Service in a nutshell? Everytime Internet Explorer needs ......

Which of the 3 timer types in the BCL do you need?
In case that you need a timer you can choose between 3 types in the Base Class Library:System.Timers.Timer... timer you should use to solve your problem depends on the problem you are trying to solve. I have found an article on the MSDN Magazine of February 2004 written by Alex Calvo which compares the 3 timers and outlines when to use which timer:http://msdn.microsoft... Windows Vista RC1 Build 5552 leaked
Microsoft, it is time to call a plumber! After the leaking of the prices for the retail versions of Windows Vista it seems now that build 5552 which is the RC1 build is being widely spread on the world wide web as we speak. Normally this build should undergo some testing to make sure it is ready to be made publicly available but apparently somebody couldn't wait to let the world enjoy Vista. Missing Windows XP Taskbar Notification Area icons
This is a problem that people have reported previously and it seems like this one is a bug in Windows XP. So far Microsoft has acknowledged this problem but hasn't offered yet a solution of fix since it doesn't seem "reproducable". The problem I am referring to are the missing icons in the Taskbar Notifcation Area. Like the volume control icon that is missing or the network connection icon and so on.Since the cause is not known for sure there are several speculations of which the ......

Schrödinger's cat
At the moment I am reading the excellent book "The Pragmatic Programmer" written by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas. Although I have only reached page 50 I can by now definitely recommend this book. There is one paragraph on page 47 that I would like to share with you. Erwin Schrödinger, who was an Austrian pshysicist and expert in Quantum Mechanics, proposed in 1935 the Schrödinger's cat thought experiment to illustrate a paradox. In the book "The Pragmatic Programmer" the Schrödinger's ......

Windows Vista 5536 Pre-RC1 installation pains
After being so frustrated about the previous Windows Vista build I decided to give the Pre-RC1 build (build # 5536) another shot especially after reading so many positive comments on many blogs considering the performance of Microsoft newest Windows platform. I wish that I could say that Windows Vista rocks but instead I got even more frustrated about it than before. First of all the installation was indeed pretty fast. From inserting the DVD to the first real boot of Windows it took about 20 minutes, ......

No HD-DVD or BluRay support in Windows Vista 32-bit!
According to an article on BetaNews you will never ever be able to play HD-DVD or BluRay movies on a Windows Vista 32-bit edition. The reason is simple: in the 32-bit editions of Vista it is possible to install unsigned drivers at the Kernel level and this could allow a smart developer to create a workaround to copy these protected movies. In the 64-bit edition of Vista every driver has to be signed. This is imho a stupid move of Microsoft because I estimate that it will take less than 2 weeks after ......

Help needed: Master Server Query protocol definitions and more resources
A couple of days ago I have started the plans to work on a library completely written in C# (2.0) that ultimately can be used to create clients that will query Game Servers and retrieve player information. At the moment I am gathering all the information I will need including protocol definitions. In the first version I will mainly focus on games using the Half-Life, Doom3 and Quake engines. With this library it should be easy to create for example a Gadget that will show you which players are playing ......

Microsoft Habu - Laser Gaming Mouse
A couple of weeks ago the site www.notfornoobs.com went live. It showed a television with the company logo's of Microsoft and Razer. The first couple of days after the launch nobody could confirm whether or not this was a bogus site collecting email addresses since you could register to be notified when the site went live. So a couple of days later Microsoft employees confirmed that the site was legit so what big announced did Microsoft had for us? Rumours were that they would finally release a PSP ......

Locked Files found during installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1
After receiving a new desktop for my daily duties I had to install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2005. Once that was done the first thing I do is install the first Service Pack for SQL Server 2005 that was release not long after the release of SQL Server 2005. Anyway during the installation I received a very "user-friendly" dialog box notifying me that some locked files were found: Apparently the setup bootstrapper of the SQL Server 2005 Service Pack installer does not check for running services ......

Two months after the planned release date Microsoft has finally released the first Service Pack for Visual Studio .NET 2003. The downloadable executable is 156MB large and can be downloade from here. XP planning vs Scrum planning
I am new to Extreme Programming (XP) so lately I have been doing quite some reading on XP. I am very familiar to the Scrum framework and I want to outline the resemblance between planning in XP and planning in Scrum. There are 12 practices in XP and planning is part of the practice called "The Planning Game". Like Scrum, XP also uses a form of simple planning to steer the project. In XP a customer is added to the team to complete the team. Every contributor to the team is part of this "Whole Team". ......

How to: Google Analytics power your Community Server 2.1

Months ago I received an account for Google Analytics and I forgot about it. Two days ago someone reminded me indirectly that I still had an account so yesterday I decided to give it a try. If you want to Google Analytics empower your site you need to embed a javascript block (called the conversion code) into all the pages you want stats on. In CS instead of modifying all the master pages there is an easier way and propably the correct way to inject the conversion code into all the ASPX pages

Assume that you have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Windows Vista and you have gotten sick and tired of Windows Vista (like myself) and you want to restore the Windows XP bootloader.
