Oblivion : How to make an unbeatable, invulnerable, immortal mage.

So I give this information as both a guide, and as a warning. Playing the mage char is pretty tough. You get killed pretty easily. So I found a way (without cheating) to not get killed. But be warned! this makes the game REALLY easy, even on hardest difficulty.

Choose a Breton, with sign of the mage (or atronach) Specialize in conjuration, illusion, destruction,  and sneak. And play through the mages guild to become archmage (I actually became immortal about 1/2 - 3/4 through the mages guild). Becoming a vampire helps.

Find some absorb magica, and resist magica items. My char (at level 10) already had 100% resist and 20% absorb (as mage, not atronach). Enchant these items yourself if you don't find them, using azura's star.

Practice summoning monsters. You can get them REALLY cheap if you get up to master level. Summoning a zombie only costs me 9 magica. I can cast zombies forever, as fast as they appear, just summon a new one, and NEVER run out of magicka. My current prefered summon is the wraith, but I might go find a xivali or atronach spell.

Buy an invisiblity spell, or become a vampire (but the vampire is only once a day, the spell I cast over and over. Vampire is usefull anyway for the skill and stat boost tho).

For me, the game now cojnsists of : Become invisible, run past all monsters, except those that I choose to kill because of loot or plot.  When I choose to kill, summon a wraith. Either go invisible again, and let the wraith kill the mob (summoning and going invis again occasionally) or help out with 70+ point fireballs.  I have 400+ magicka. I can cast 4-5 fireballs without using any magicka potions. Not many creatures can tank the fireballs and the wraith. This works for all the oblivion gates (where you dont have to fight at ALL, just run past and grab the sigil), all the dungeons, everywhere pretty much.

So far none of the creatures can see invis, or bother to cast detect life. I have found that zombies will occasionally see me while invis, but only if I have been fighting that particular zombie already, they will never find me as I walk past.

Well I bet you had a really enjoyable game playing like that - NOT.

What's the point exactly?

I used a simmilar strategy ultil around 20th level, when I could kill ANYTHING using Invisibiliy and a sneak attack with the Dark Brotherhood quest weapon. Now I just run at them and hold the block button: Return Damage 23% & Reflect Spell 50%. They hurt themselves more than me.

Amazing guide... if it works. I haven't actually got down to playing this game yet... going to start today evening.
I hope the author hasn't forgotten to mention anything important, since I'm going to try his strategy straight off!
Obion, the point is that if one can beat this Game without using cheats, as I'm sure many do, what is the harm?
As for the fun factor, I'll be the judge of that while I play. If its no fun, I can always stop following his strategy, but surely beating a game without cheats is also a lot of fun.

Wow! At last I can complete the game with no skill and minimal effort. Hurrah! Hmmmm.. I wonder if running around invisibly slaying everything in my path will become boring after a few hours... nah.

what a buttmonkey.

mage probably is the best sign for your *guide*, because atronach totally sux...oblivion gives a good and sensible regen rate, just not like morrowind...it may be a good way to fight without getting hurt, but i don't think everybody enjoy this way...sometimes being in danger makes the game funnier...and also -> this is not a cheating way to play at all, because if it does work with your efforts, it is never cheating.

How do u want to lvl up while no fighting and only using 2 skills????
this realy sucks...just train destruction and alteration and you can beat every thing with taking no damage....

Tip: Be a High Elf en choose Apprentice as Birthsign train en get your restoration up so you don't have to be less of your weakness

i am already basically invulnerable, have an entire suit of 20% damage resistance along with rings and amulet, as well as the same but with 50 points fortify magicka - these enchantments can be found in oblivion gates as sigil stones - and now i have 800 magicka and can destroy anything i want in a single hit, as i am level 100 in all major skills, which are mage ones.

(this can eventually get boring though, but then just take off the armour)

Dont worry I'll help you.Azura's shrine is located north-northeast of the Lake Arrius Caverns you visit
in the Dagon Shrine quest part of the main story. It is usually the first
shrine mentioned in the game. The offering, glow dust, is a by-product of the
will-o-wisp, which can be difficult to find. The easiest way to get glow dust
is to go to the Bruma Mages Guild and ask to join (if not already a member).
Go to the basement and pick some glow dust up from a table in the alchemy
room. You may also be able to find some in one of the alchemy shops in
Imperial City.

During the hours of dawn (roughly 5 - 7am) or dusk (roughly 5 - 7pm), Activate
the statue of Azura with some glow dust in your pocket. In times past, Azura
sent five followers to kill a vampire lord. They succeeded, but at the price
of becoming vampires themselves. They sealed themselves in the cave of the
vampire lord. Azura wants you to grant them "eternal peace".

Joy. Azura marks a "Gutted Mine" on your map to the southeast. Stock up and
head out. The cavern is small, and contains only the five vampiric followers
of Azura. Advance very slowly and try to take them on one at a time. The first
three tend to be close together (they are marked on your map), so separating
them can be difficult.

Fire works well on vamps, so use that if you have it. You will almost
certainly get infected with porphyric hemophilia (the vampire disease). Don't
worry about it until you've finished the task. The last two vampires are
located in a secret chamber opened with a pull cord in the first large room
you come to.

After all five are dead, return to Azura and she'll reward you with a
re-useable grand soul gem, Azura's Star. If you're heavily dependant on
enchanted weapons, this may be a very useful item. On the other hand, you can
get enchanted weapons recharged at any Mages Guild hall, and regular soul gems
are found quite frequently.

Once you're done, use a Cure Disease potion or visit a temple in a city to
cure your porphyric hemophilia. And no there i no way you can Syuck this up.

True, it's not cheating. At least not by the rules of say taking advantage of a glitch, or using cheat codes. However, I think it's a spirit of the game violation, and I would not enjoy playing the game as suggested in this article. But hey, if it works for someone else, you're entitled to play the game as you wish, I just hope I never run into someone who plays like that online.

hehehe - u dick (watever it means) - Ultimate Mage - so we don't rule as much as u (sarcastic) - to get lots of magika u need to enchant armour. either do it with soul gems or get the sigil stone which fortifys it by 50 points - i got 300 magiek by enchantign my armour with it - there is a even mor efun way of killing monsters than by using invisibility - become immortal - look it up - u need the chorrol shiled and a ring and a neclace - look it up on the internet to find it - it lets u reflect 101% damage - also the Mundane Ring resists 50% spells and reflects 35% spells - if ur a breton u don't need anything else but otherwise u enchant armour to do another 50% - this lets u walk around visible and anythign that attacks u literally kills itself. hope i helped

why bothering with enchantments while you can create an fortify willpower spell that boosts your magicka just to power up yourself to perform a much mightier fortify-willpower-spell? Gives you thousands of magicka with two single spells and gives you powerfull spells which seem to shatter dagons healthbar a little more ;)
but after all, it is gonna get boring after a short while...

This is so pointless, hiding and striking is a weaklings way out of fighting, just play the game normally fighting whatever you can whenever you can. For Magicka enchant armor with fortify magicka 24 with grand soul gem.

this is not cheating, but it is a very boring way to win the game. i dont really see the point if you do not have to work to get anything. all you have to do is go invisible and kill it with a summone monster. how lame is that?

# re: Oblivion : How to make an unbeatable, invulnerable, immortal mage.

There is a way to get over 100 per cent reflect damage (using items like Escutcheon of Chorrol, Amulet of axes and another one which I can never remember) so no-one can hurt you in melee and 100 percent resist magic (Being Breton gives you half of this then a ring easily gotten later on gives you the other half) so no-one can hurt you (except archers). And that hardly makes you invulnerable if you just make yourself invisible and run past people! Also another way to increase your magicka is to use a fortify magicka spell but make several ones and make them last 120 seconds each but you'll also need to increase your will power up 100 for 120 seconds so you can actually make use of that massive store of magicka. And sneaking through the game isn't a cheating way of completing the games it is ridiculous to say that. Thats the whole point of oblivion to choose what you want to be a mage, warrior or thief/assassin character.

I think what u did was really cool this is crapp that people are down playing your character the game is all about custom characters and playing styles this is your way of playing the game. I feel that it is a good thing to do this to a character u dont care about inopinion and use their god like power to search the game for hard to get items and heavely defended places that way you can know what u are up against when u go there with your main character. on seperate saves of course

hey, has anyone but me ever gone into the imperial city and just killed everything, and then when there are no gaurds chasing you just gone into the next city and done the same thing? it's pretty nubish, but it's fun if you want to test yourself (i'll bet you can all kill as easily as i can if not easier, but still fun)

One more thing, for people in need of money

if you need money i have the perfect strategy (without cheating) simply become a vampire, do the quest for the cure for vampirism (should be long and boring, but worth it in the end) at the very end of the quests, you give the cue to the counts wife and she is better for about two seconds and then she dies.....................rofl..............but then after the count has had time to grieve, you will talk to him for a reward (i think wether or not you take the cure will effect how much you get, i had and only got 500g) you will recive your money (hover much it is) and yay! all better now! but, if you keep talking to the count over, and over, and over, and over again you will keep getting the same amount of money over and over again! (catio tho, once you stop talking to him he goes back to his room and locks himself in) i got over 1,000,000g doing this (took me like a half and hour but i am so glad i did! (i think you might be able to open the lock and talk to the count again if you need to, but i haven't so im not sure)

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!!!!!

no nemissis you do not lose any abilities when you become a vampire. however, with every stage of vampirism you gain increases in certain stats and gain spell-like abilities such as embrace of shadows. however, you are penalized with weakness to fire and sun damage and once you reach the final stage of vampirism, most people will not talk with you. I hope that clears that up.

everyone has their own way huh. the invisibility thing is lame, the only time you should ever use invisibility constantly is if your turned the difficulty way above normal. And honestly, its all about buffs. But here's what my mage set up is, without cheesy bullshit trying to avoid battles... why would you wanna do that? the battles are the best parts.

Race: High Elf; Sign: the Lady; Class: Pink whatever you want but def. include (Illusion, Conjuration, and Restoration -- best skill in the game. and obviously destruction.)

I enchanted my boots and gloves with +50 magika sigil stone, and wear the bladeturn hood and robes. Cruelty's Heart - 20st and 20will. and Ring of Lordship, and a +50 magika ring.

Total Magika: 454, (Scales of Pitless justice add 4.)

Now the buffs are what makes him the shit. since magikas not an issue. you can make em last long, and powerful.

Self Buffs:
Arcance Brilliance: Fortify Intelligence 25pts, Fortify Destruction 50pts, Shield 50pts all for 45 sec. Cost: 250+ Magika.

Blessing of Faith: This one takes a mastered Restoration and Alteration skill combined. Not to mention 288 magika. But its awesome.
Spell Absorbtion 12 pts for 60 sec, fortyify willpower 50pts for 60 sec, fortify magika 50pts for 60 sec, fortify restoration (or destruction) 20pts for 60 sec, Shield 15% for 60 sec.

for about 58 seconds (if your wearing armor) you will rock the fucking house and nothing will hurt you, your magika will come back mad fast, and your healing (or destruction)spells will be cheaper.

Attack Spells:

Arcane Fury: Weakness to Magic 100% in 10ft for 10 sec, Weakness to fire 100% in 10 ft for 10 sec, Fortify Destruction for 10 sec on self.

Then hit them with the Mage's Guild given spell Wizard's Fury and it does triple the damage.

My strategy = enchant a few items (2 rings, a cloak, and a hood for me) with 20% chameleon. IF you're sneak is above 100 like me you'll be undectable to most creatures in dungeons, but in the off-chance that something happens to see you at 80% chameleon - cast a cloak spell (shroudwalk works too) to push your chameleon over 100%... then slay all that approaches with your 3x or 6x sneak attacks, depending on whether you're using a bow or a blade. Thats how I breezed through the Arena Grand champion dead in 3 hits - master of sneak ignores armor while sneaking... Also, conjuration is by far the easiest of the magical disciplines to gain mastery in - just make a 1 sec summon zombie spell, and then cast it for a long ass time. It won't take forever like destruction (self damage 3 pts), restoration, or alteration will. Remember - its FREQUENCY that counts, not total magicka use.

I've nearly reached level 30 as a brenton mage. I am the highest rank in the brother hood, thieves guild and mages guild. I had began with mages guild and found that the easiest way to get through it is be unlike what my build intended. Since every person you battle lacks armor, hacking and slashing with an enchanted weapon saves you time and summoning a "punching bag" helps keep your foes eye on a different target that isn't you.

To level up your spell casting quickly, create one spell for each attribute. A summon spell that lasts no longer than one second and while you're goofing off in town or running to find a cave, casting non-stop helps you gain a skill in no time. It is also wise to summon the lowest level skeleton (and use stronger skeletons as your armor skill progresses) and slash them three times. From there, they will attack you. Heal yourself as they attack and within 25-40 seconds, they vanish. You may than repair your armor and go again. Summoned creatures are also great for working on your block (or other defensive skills) and your offense of choice.

Agility and speed are vital for a mage (assuming mana comes first). I have always relied on jumping around and avoiding characters (while my summons kills whomever/whatever), rather than getting down and dirty myself. Very helpful. If you can think quickly enough and move your character out-of-harms way, you needn't worry about those "reflect mele/magic" items/spells/potions.

Being a mage forces you to take much more time killing something, vs your "tank cousin", but the benefits are much more rewarding.

I have never used chameleon/invisible. Sneak is a beautiful thing.

Well, if you want to be TRULY invincible, try a 100% Chameleon spell or Enchantments. Easier to do than Derek's Idea, especially if you use
1. Hood

Well every1 have thier own style of playing..If u become bored with melee try range or magic..My personal style is camo glass 100% then use glass dagger with paralysed effect(uber fun and funny)..with sneak atk Master lvl u can kill everything in sight.

Funny n Enjoyable (without playing cheat):
1.Water walking
2.Dmg STR+Absorb STR+ Burden
3.Silence spell/enchament
4.Paralyse
5.Disintergrate Armor+Disintergrate Weapon ^^
6.Telekenesis

p/s i think deadric 100% reflect melee +100% reflect spell dmg would b nice n fun..but i dun think so it's possible to get both 100% without using cheat^^.Anyway..play the game as a game was meant to be..ENJOY! on ur own way.

The way i do things is use high elf under atronach, get about 850 magic plus have some absorb magic items on you, added with you're already 50% gives you 100% absorb magic so the weakness doesnt matter anymore. MAX ALL MAGIC STATS, IF YOU DONT THIS IS USELESS! If you want to get your magic back up without fighting you can just use pots, they're one of the easiest things to find. After magic is all settled get your heavy armor up with summoned monsters attacking you so you can defend against range and melee. Get one of your weapon types up using the same summon technique only attacking your summon not it attacking you,(i upped blunt so i can easily knock people backwards.) and summon a bound weapon. (use university so you can up the time you get to use it.) So now you have full magic range and melee defense along with magic and melee attack.<--This is what it's like when you're maxed. Downside is, before you get most of the stuff the game is pretty difficult, especially near the beginning after you're done with the tutorial.

If you don't have anything nice to say.. Why say it at all.. Seriously, how does spreading anger help you in any way.

I personally thought it was a pretty decent way to play the game.. What's the point? Well it's a roleplaying game with fps elements not the other way around. If I were in this world, that's exactly what I would have done... Because personally I'd want to make sure I lived first and foremost.

If a challenge is what you want.. Well make an unarmed character play on max difficulty and level up your alchemy as a major skill right away. Have fun with that..

In my opinion the 100% chameleon is overpowered.. Monsters should be able to adapt, or wizards at least should be able to sense your life. So I consider it a glitch and don't use.. Gaming the system to get perfect stats is Metagaming and not immersive so I don't use that either... But his archtype is just roleplaying, it's not invincible either and personally I would try it on max or just under to give a bit more of a challenge.. Maybe with permadeath. What's lame about that?

Try this on for size, this is a really good spell on easy diffuculty or an easy way out on medium difficulty, Drain Health on touch 100 points for 1 second now on easy difficulty it kills the majority of enemies except ogres and minotaurs and on medium you just beat them down to about a quarter of their health and cast it on them

@Canadian
or if you can swing it, try that same spell in the form of a ball with a radius on it. I called it Death Ball. You can also make one where you put soul steal on it and then you can 1hit many creatures from range and steal their souls. Spells like this are pretty helpful when you are fighting other humans because they usually don't have enough hp to survive and sometimes they group together. You've got to be careful though not to miss to many times or you could find yourself out of mana.

One caution is that it really can only be used as a finisher for most things once you crank up the difficulty level to max.

Another useful spell for a mage that I made was an brief invisibility spell combined with a health Regen spell, you don't need to be as uber as you'd think to make something like this and you can dissapear for a few seconds to get back your health. I set the invisibility time for 4 seconds if I can remember correctly.

There's an area in the main quest where they take all your gear away. It's pretty fun to play through it with some of your own carefully thought out custom spells, and it doesn't feel unfair to go invisible for just a few seconds, especially when it costs a fair amount of your magika.

Here's another fun idea for spells. Damage or drain enough fatigue points on an enemy and they'll be collapse from exhaustion much like a paralysis spell. If you start punching the crap out of them they'll stay down until you can use a finisher. Blunt weapons should also work the same way here.

Another trick for emergency survival as a mage, make a absorb health dagger. You're low on HP, and you just switch to the dagger for a second and get a hit or two off. If you make it a radius spell, you can drain health from everyone nearby. This can kill many things, but I only used it for emergencies because it was a pain to constantly recharge with soul gems.

IMHO, this game is much more fun if you play on a harder difficulty setting and think a bit about your leveling, I don't mean you need to +5/+5/+5 or +5/+5/+1luck every round, but you want at least one +5 every round and hopefully a +3 or +4 from everything else. Work around your character's weaknesses by making them strong in other ways. I watched my friend play through the game with 100% Chameleon/ Sneak and a big sword he made that could kill most things in a few hits and recharge itself easily. Very boring.

I have read these posts. My arch mage can be beaten, but only if I let that happen. My problem with some of the comments is this, if invisibility is a cheat, which it is not, then why is it available during the Xbox 360 version of oblivion. I am not going to go into a lot of detail, but for me, game play stops more or less at level 21.
I like to walk around in the environment of Oblivion, and not be molested by the creatures,so I use invisibility 100% for thirty seconds. That way I am not eliminating any creatures whose corpses I would be tripping over later. I do not believe many of these posts ... about bumping off all the guards, because some of them will continue to spawn because there character is needed for a story line.
However I did go off the deep end once or twice, and started bumping off the creepy mages at the university...a strange thing happened ... some, of the characters, helped me, vent my rage... I have taken all the apprentices out and gotten the go getters bumped off by some nasty creature, etc. If you happen to go off the deep end, make sure you save your game before you do or else you will no longer be a mage in good standing. Like the arch mage can't get back in the university. Because the character I created is so powerful, If I want a good fight, then I have to duke it out. Outcome ... always the same I win.
If you found going through the story line offensive,as I did at times, then here is something you might like to try. Take the heir to the throne and the leader of the blades to the capitol, and close them in the place of worship. They will both follow you there. Leave them there. Close all the oblivion gates, Which is actually pretty easy to do and play on ... because even if you finish the story line the end game does not change much ... you will be missing some very interesting places though.

No offence, but that's a really lame strategy. I focus more on playing the game than trying to become invincible, yet I am a lvl 30 Breton with around 3000 magicka (through use of the permanenet enchantment glitch - call me a cheater, but it helps sometimes when you want to cast real uber-spells). What's the point of becoming invincible? The game just gets boring. I have 100% reflect damage and absorb magicka if I want to use it, but I don't because it takes away the challenge of the game. Trust me, you'll get a much better feeling just playing the game normally.

It's a great strategy if you want to become invincible but then the game is just really boring, i mean you just sneak up and one hit them? Wheres the fun in that? It's funner to just have a clean fight with them, and maybe do a good amount of damage while sneaking, but not kill the in 1 hit.and the spell and damage reflection? its good if you get 10-20 damage or spell reflection but not 100%

I am invisible all the time, don't have to cast any spells or nothing. All you need is five features of any armor, I used fur it was cheap. Then I got the summon xiviali spell (I'm level 25 so I played the game normal too) and I soul trapped it in my azuras star. I repeted this and enchanted all my armor stuff with 20% chameleon and 5x20 is 100% so now I'm invisible all the time I have all of my 5 enchanted armor on.

I played through the entire game as a mage with only an enchanted robe and hood for protection.
Playing an old school mage is a challenge (Especially if your wearing just a robe and hood) putting on glass armor and then enchanting each piece is more of a battlemage, as they wear full armor.

Sorry, I find it funny that there are so many people impressed with themselves for making a high level/powerful character in this game. This is the worst/easiest of all the "The Elder Scrolls" games.

Go play Daggerfall! It's free and more challenging. ^_^

Spellmaking tips:

Luxury Spells

Seduce: 100 Charm for 5 seconds. <Makes Personaility and Speechcraft useless>

Arcane Shield: 60-85 Shield for 30-60 Seconds, "use it whenever you face Archers or Fighters"
--------------------------------------------------
GOD MODE SPELLS

Cloak of Shadows: 100% Chameleon for 10-30 Seconds.
You can do whatever you want with this one.

Hell on Earth: Frenzy lv 25 for 10-40 seconds [Magnitude X] (use it in a city just for fun)

Enslave Creature/Humanoid: Command Creature/Humanoid lv 25 for 20-40 seconds. Very usefull, but costs alot of mana.

Hand of Death: Drain Health: 100 for 3 Second, Drain Endurance: 40-100 for 3 Seconds. Damage: 80-100 Fire/Frost/Shock etc..., Weakness: 100.

add your own Spells aswell, you should be owning big time, just Enhance your gear with Magicka with azura's star and you'll do fine.

Grats, your a DEMI GOD!

This is a DECENT guide to becoming a god or demi-god. In truth, there is no way top become a true demi-god or god in oblivion without modding or glitching the game. Trust me... ive tried. Buuuut, there are alternatives to this invisibility. Chameleon, for one, is much better all around. If you take, lets say, a full set of Amber armor from the Shivering Isles expansion, or any other set of armor, and enchant each piece to the max for chameleon, you will end up with 100% chameleon, therefore making you PERMANENTLY invisible, as long as you wear the armor. I've done this before, and it saves a lot of magicka, in case you want to save it for your 100+ damage spells you have planned for the creatures you want to loot.
Personally, i stopped doing this, because it kinda ruins the game... i mean, whats the point of playing a game that you know you will never be beaten in?
