Geeks With Blogs
Freestyle Coding Programming in the Real World

The time has come to unveil the new project for the blog. I know, I know. I can hear the excitement.

I try to go everywhere I can to preach the gospel of XNA. As I do, the #1 question I get is, "Have you ever published a game?" Every time, I have to respond with, "I haven't actually published anything. I have some ideas, but I've stuck mostly with research and teaching."

Over time, this wears on you. I mean, as the saying goes, those who do, teach. Thus, it's about time I practice what I preach.

Starting today, I am going to build and publish a game, live on the site. I've had an idea that I've been toying with for the past couple of years. I'm going to formulate it into a project, and build the entire thing live.

This will not be a quick project. I'm going to start with an actual design document1. After that, I'm going to start slinging code. The code will be hosted somewhere to be determined2. The source will be open for download, but only I will be able to explicitly commit to my tree. I'd love some input from the community, but I'd like it filtered through me. That way, I can make sure it gets top billing in the blog and you get consistent and conspicuous credit in the code.

The ground rules are simple. With the exception of Visual Studio, which I have at Premium for the day job3, I will only use free tools. Right now, I have a copies of Blender and Audacity for graphics and sound. Furthermore, I have directly expose all costs up front. If I pay someone, you'll know how much I paid. We'll keep a running total. We'll compare it to the revenues at the end.

This project will be much more then code. I want to talk design. I want to talk advertising. I want to talk marketing. I want to talk PR. I want to attack this from every angle.

I may knock it out of the ballpark. I may fail tragically. I don't know where this will end up. I just hope you'll join me.

1I was hoping to have it done by now. It is about half written.
2It will probably be CodePlex, but I'm up for suggestions.
3OK, so it's actually because I'm spoiled on that one. At least it's not Ultimate.

I'd love to help in this endeavor, but I'm not sure that I have the mad skillz to be useful. Still, if this keeps coming through on my RSS reader, I may have to tinker.

Good luck!
