My Zune is a Brick!

imageIt seems that at 2am last night, most (if not all) 30GB Zune players became a brick! I use my Zune a lot and this is rather disturbing to tell you the truth. My Zune only shows the Zune logo and the progress bar at full and will not respond to any kind of button presses. I can’t even turn the dang thing off --- so I’m probably doing a good job of burning that image into the screen of the player till the batteries run out.

Here are some announcements from others on this matter:

CruchGear

TechRadar

Gizmodo

CollegeOTR

No word yet on what and how this happened.

I work with several colleagues who have had the same problem today. I was able to fix theirs by removing the battery to force the device to do a "hard reset". There still seems to be an issue with the time resetting each time the device turns off, but at least they can use it now! I think this was some sort of time released patch from Microsoft with the latest firmware dealing with the new year, and updating the calendar.

If it is a leap year/clock thing then it *might* correct itself when both your time zone and UTC have fully transitioned into 2009.

It might be worth leaving everything alone until tomorrow and then trying again.

Today is day 366 of the year. The fact that they all failed at the same time, points to a date/time related problem.

No-one learnt any lessons from Y2K by the look of things.

My Zune froze up just yesterday. I let the battery drain and when I want to recharge, the logo came back. But I'll wait another day and try again.

I've heard that this fix only works for 80% of the players. So if it doesn't I want to try disconnecting the battery as noted earlier. How in the world you you get the case open? It seems very tightly sealed.

Thanks.
