Something new to worry about - Hotel card keys

I travel a lot (ask my friends!), so I found this story pretty alarming. There is a worry about when you stay at a hotel that the hotel card keys (that look like credit cards) are actually holding information that you provided to stay at the hotel. There are cards that are holding:

* Your name

* Your address (if you gave it)

* Room number

* The start date and end date of your stay at the hotel

* and YOUR credit card number that you gave the hotel

There have also been reports of hotel employees taking the cards for the information once they have been turned in. Crazy ....

No worries, this is an urban legend that has been reserached and debunked. http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_hotel_keycards.htm

I thought so too, but my work sent out a major announcement to all employees saying that even though it was reported as a hoax on some web sites that our security folks tested it out on some of their personal cards and they have found it to be true ... to the depth of what information I am unsure.

Bill,
It is an urban legend. I wouldn't be surprised if you heard from someone who heard from someone that heard from someone that the security people at your company tested their hotel key cards and it did have information. There is more evidence than not that it is an urban legend. (It is also on truthorfiction.com.) People can get your information a lot of different ways, but not from your hotel key card.
