Latest Book – Professional Silverlight 4
My latest book was just released. From Wrox – Professional Silverlight 4. This was a fun book to do as Silverlight is a great technology and will be one of the core technologies that will be used for so many applications now and in the future. Microsoft really put together something quite splendid here and you will find that this book is a good dive into the technology. The Silverlight 4 platform continues to add excitement to building rich Internet applications (RIAs), and it offers new user interface ......

Visual Studio 2010 Is Here!
I think back to the days of the first versions of Visual Studio (when it was called Visual Studio .NET, remember?) and I think about how far Microsoft has come with this IDE. It really is the best IDE on the market. There is so much to this IDE it is amazing. It now can really handle managing your complete software application development lifecycle. For me, it is (besides Windows 7) the best and most successful product Microsoft has developed. You can obviously get this now and it is available on ......

2010 Technology Predictions
Well, another year, and heck …. even another decade and 2010 is going to be such an important year, or kick-off year for technology that I thought I would take a stab at making some technology predictions on what I think might happen this year. Technology always has these “next thing” items coming forward that it is really hard to even really know what is for real. Technologies might be quite good – but it will also take additional things like community ground swell or true behind-the-scenes business ......

Microsoft PDC 2009 – Day Two Keynote
The second day keynote at PDC 2009 in Lost Angeles was shared by Steven Sinofsky and Scott Guthrie. Steven is the President of Windows and Windows Live Division and it really must have been a great day for him as he came out for the first time in a major conference with the new Windows 7 launched and the old Vista problems just fading away into Microsoft’s past. There is a lot of excitement for Windows 7 and there is excitement for the new Windows 7 APIs that are available for developers to work ......

Microsoft PDC 2009 – Main Messages
The first keynote of Microsoft’s PDC 2009 conference in Los Angeles has come and gone. Ray Ozzie kicked it off with some of the main messages that gave everyone insight into how Microsoft sees the direction of IT, programming, processes, and more. It was an interesting session that really focused on a few things, but most importantly it focused on Microsoft dedication to the Windows Azure platform and the big thing (to me), the idea that they are dedicated to making a seamless experience between ......

New Book: Professional ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 In C# and VB
My latest bookwas just released new and improved and with a fresh mint taste! Last month my AJAX bookcame out and this month is it a book that is a continuation of a great series of ASP.NET books. This is an update to the best-selling Professional ASP.NET 3.5 book that the three of us put out about one year ago (time flies). If you are an ASP.NET developer, I (no doubt) advise you to get this book as there has been plenty added to it to bring it up with the latest release of ASP.NET. This service ......

TechEd 2008 DVDs and Silverlight
This weekend, I had some free time, and what does every developer do with this free time - I went to my TechEd 2008 DVDs to watch some sessions. But in loading the DVDs, I realized that they wouldn't work as I thought. I was only getting a reminder that I needed to install the Beta 2 version of Silverlight (the RTM of Silverlight 2 is out now). Tim Heuer put up a nice blog post stating a solution to the problem and he also has a little Silverlight application on his page that allows you to search ......

PDC 2008 Keynote Day 2
This keynote is all about Windows 7 (the Vista that shoulda been) and new things from ScottGu's team. While yesterday was about the back-end infrastructure of the new cloud platform Azure from Microsoft, today's keynote focused on the front end of Microsoft. One funny question from Ray Ozzie was wondering what we would do at work all day if we didn't have a computer on our desk. Here are some random notes from the keynote. "The PC will be more relevant in the next era." - Ray Ozzie Today we barely ......

Wrong Perceptions in Modern Financial Charting
You see a ton of charting components out there for .NET. Whenever you look into any magazine for developers in the developer space, you will see all sorts of advertisements for charting components of every kind. One of the main things these companies show is the new fancy and shiny charts as proof that they are the obvious choice in your applications that you want to build. As a developer, you might look at this chart and say, "Wow, this is new and this would look wonderful in my application". I ......

My Latest New Books on the Market - Professional C# 2008 and Professional Visual Basic 2008
Two of my latest books just hit the market - Professional C# 2008 and Professional Visual Basic 2008, both from Wrox. The back cover of the C# book is as follows: Updated for .NET 3.5 and Visual Studio® 2008, this book is the ultimate guide to C# 2008 and its environment. Beginning with a look into the architecture and methodology of .NET, the team of superlative authors explains why the C# language cannot be viewed in isolation, but rather, must be considered in parallel with the .NET Framework. ......

Book: Professional ASP.NET 3.5 : in C# and VB
Scott Hanselman beat me to the punch, but come Feb 14th, our latest and greatest edition of the Professional ASP.NET book is coming out. The book has a ton of new content and was exciting to put together - but man, did it take some serious time to do (especially when all three of us have real jobs, kids, newborns, animals, etc to deal with). The book is big ... really BIG - 1728 pages, so it can serve many other useful purposes after you are done reading it! :) The book description from the ......

Silverlight Book
While I am thinking about Silverlight, I am looking forward to Devin Rader and company's new Silverlight 1.0 book from Wrox that is coming out this Fall! Devin is one of the main characters from Infragistics and due to the nature of his job of building controls for this company - he is usually neck deep in all the latest and greatest stuff coming out of Redmond. Stay tuned. Buy today: ......

Microsoft Tafiti as a beta
Microsoft just launched a beta version of an application called Tafiti. A nice test application from Microsoft that demonstrates - probably most importantly - the use of Silverlight. For those new to Silverlight - Microsoft's official one paragraph description of this technology is: "Microsoft® Silverlight™ is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. Silverlight offers a flexible programming ......

Go to MIX07 for free!

Well, really it already happened. For those that missed it though, Microsoft has just released the entire conference for free online. You will need to install Silverlight to view all the sessions. Outstanding is all I have to say. Thanks Microsoft.

The sessions -
