2010 Technology Predictions

Well, another year, and heck …. even another decade and 2010 is going to be such an important year, or kick-off year for technology that I thought I would take a stab at making some technology predictions on what I think might happen this year. Technology always has these “next thing” items coming forward that it is really hard to even really know what is for real. Technologies might be quite good – but it will also take additional things like community ground swell or true behind-the-scenes business ......

New Book: Professional ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 In C# and VB

My latest bookwas just released new and improved and with a fresh mint taste! Last month my AJAX bookcame out and this month is it a book that is a continuation of a great series of ASP.NET books. This is an update to the best-selling Professional ASP.NET 3.5 book that the three of us put out about one year ago (time flies). If you are an ASP.NET developer, I (no doubt) advise you to get this book as there has been plenty added to it to bring it up with the latest release of ASP.NET. This service ......

Step Aside Kindle – Hello Sony eReader!

I wanted an eReader of some kind. I knew that. This is a cool technology. First off, no matter if you get an Amazon Kindle or a Sony eReader, then you are in for a definite treat. This is one cool gadget and if you like to read books or magazines or whatever, then you are going to love the portability in carrying an easy-to-read library with you in a nice convenient little package such as these gadgets offer. For those that haven’t seen this in person, the big deal with this all is the piece of the ......

My Latest Book – Professional ASP.NET 3.5 AJAX

I just got back from a business trip and sitting there on the counter was a copy of my latest book from Wrox! This book (my 20th) is titled Professional ASP.NET 3.5 AJAX. This was a fun book and I wrote this with some great co-authors including Matt Gibbs, Dan Wahlin, and Dave Reed. Amazon says that the book will be available on February 3rd (not too far away). Here is some of the introduction I wrote for the book: ----------------------------- ASP.NET revolutionized Web application development. ......

Google Loses - Authors Win!

I blogged years ago and voiced my disappointment of Google taking books, scanning them, databasing the contents of the books, and then making these books available to end users in "chucks". I am a computer book author and have written 18 books (two more on the way) and I wrote in my old blog post about why I didn't care for this move and how it really hurt me as an author. Back then, I wrote about the issue: "The problem is (at least for publishers and authors) is that let's say there is someone ......

My Latest New Books on the Market - Professional C# 2008 and Professional Visual Basic 2008

Two of my latest books just hit the market - Professional C# 2008 and Professional Visual Basic 2008, both from Wrox. The back cover of the C# book is as follows: Updated for .NET 3.5 and Visual Studio® 2008, this book is the ultimate guide to C# 2008 and its environment. Beginning with a look into the architecture and methodology of .NET, the team of superlative authors explains why the C# language cannot be viewed in isolation, but rather, must be considered in parallel with the .NET Framework. ......

SOA in 10 Steps

It is quite easy to say that the IT world is a diverse world. For instance, it is quite rare that you would find an enterprise that is built upon a single vendor’s technology stack. Instead, you most likely find that a company is made up of a patchwork of systems. Some of the systems are based upon UNIX, some Microsoft, and some others (sometimes items that are considered legacy). A company’s software and data repositories are something that grows quite organically over time. Usually you will find ......

D&D Founder Dies

I was, for a moment, brought back to my childhood when I heard that Dungeons and Dragons Founder, Gary Gygax, passed away. There was an interesting article on Slate (more of like a commentary) on the author's thoughts back to his childhood and D&D play. I myself, remember that I was really into the game as a geeky twelve year old. I wasn't that good at basketball even though I was pretty much the tallest kid in school. I was rather odd looking and really found my in-crowd playing D&D after ......

Professional ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB Book Available Today

The new edition of the Wrox ASP.NET book is officially on the shelves today! Amazon received their shipment and it is now in stock for a CHEAP $34.64. My co-authors, Scott Hanselman and Devin Rader, revamped this book and added quite a number of new pages to deal with the new features from AJAX to IIS 7 to LINQ to this book. We really focused on helping the ASP.NET developer understand the tools, APIs, controls, and environments at their disposal for this release. ASP.NET is, in my humble opinion, ......

John Wiley & Pearson Sue Google

John Wiley, Pearson, and some other publishers have come together to sue Google over Google Print - a service that is putting books online. The publishers are stating that this is a copyright infringement. As an author, I would tend to agree with the publishers here. You write all this content to be packaged as a book or sold as an e-book - not for Google to take and provide to the world for free. I really hope the publishers are successful in their endeavors ......

Fav CDI know it is old, but I spent the first six months listening to Sugar: Copper Blue. Oh, what a great album ......

ASP.NET Roadshow Drove Through St. Louis!

Rob Howard, PM on the ASP.NET team, came to St. Louis last night for the ASP.NET Roadshow. It was an outstanding event and the St. Louis .NET User Group along with Microsoft got around 450 people there for the event. The event covered ASP.NET Basics, ASP.NET Tips and Tricks, ASP.NET Security and ASP.NET Whidbey. Our meeting was about 3 1/2 hours long. Poor Rob - he got in a car wreck before the event here in St. Louis. He was squished between two cars (the perpetrator being a cab) - and complained ......

Goodbye Sharon - all the best!

I have done six .NET books all with the same editor. Today was her last day as she has decided to move onto less-stressful pastures than book acquisitions. I used to always joke in my house and say that I had two ladies that would boss me around in my life - my wife and my editor. All the best Sharon .... what am I going to do now?

Wrox is alive and well

There seems to have been a lot of questions in the community about WROX - if they existed and what was going on. Let me report that Wrox is alive and well and is upgrading a lot of their most popular books at this moment. I worked on Professional C# 3rd Edition and the Wrox Professional VB.NET 3rd Edition. Both these books will be coming out in a couple of months time. Rob Howard and gang are working on the 3rd Edition of the Professional ASP.NET book. There are also some new books on the way. I ......
