RFID @ TechEd 2005 update

I posted Sunday about the RFID tags at TechEd. I still have no idea what or where they were planning on using them at. I will try to find out for those that are interested.

UPDATE!!! - At the keynote this morning we found out what the RFID tags are for. Microsoft is using them to track where people are throughout the conference. They are 100% anonymous. Most people have either thrown them away, but at this mornings keynote they gave away 5 creative portal media players (if I am not mistaken). It was a RFID raffle. You became eligible when you talked in the door with your RFID tag.

If they were 100% anonymous, how did they find out who the winners of the raffle were?

If there was a number on the tag, and they were given out when you registereed for the conference, how can you be sure they were anonymous?

Just wondering.

1. They handed the RFID tag out from these small bins. They were not attached to your badge. So no way for them to know what RFID tag went with a badge.

2. For the raffle they scanned for the tags at the entrance to the keynote. Then they got a program to randomly pick 5 of those tags. They then displayed those numbers on the large screens and then let the people with the numbers go and reclaim the prize as long as they had the tag with them. Therefore those 5 people are the only 5 that could have their identity matched up with the RFID tags.

So as you can see 100% anonymous except for the 5 people who won the prize.

I missed this years TechEd - how can I learn more about the deployment of RFID technologies used during this years event? I'm very interested in knowing which companies were involved. - Thank you
