In the wave of release we now have the final version of the TFS Web Access. Check out VSTS Web Access Power Tool for Team System 2008 released! Great work guys! Cheers, ET Technorati Tags: TFSWA 2008,TFS 2008 ......

Hey all, I've seen a few things going around about this so I'd like to put in my .02c too. When opening a VS2005 solution in VS2008 their will be an upgrade wizard that will show up. If you go through the wizard and 'upgrade' the solution/project here is what happens: at the top of solution you just opened the first line will change from Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 9.00 to Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 10.00 That's it, nothing else gets change and ......

Hey all, it's official, VS and TFS 2008 are available today for download, there are so many new things it's hard to do the product justice in a simple blog. I've had the pleasure of testing and giving Microsoft a lot of feedback on this and future release of VSTS and I'm happy to say they listen to our feedback. Feel free to send me your comments I'll make sure they are aware of them. Jeff as a great post on all the new feature available Visual Studio Team System 2008 ships! so go have a look. Brian ......

So I gave a session at the Montreal Code Camp this weekend and it was a blast. There was about 70 people, and a lot of great questions. I think the buzz is starting about VSTS/TFS 2008 it will be a great release... Here is the deck. Now one month until Devteach and my move to my first house!! Cheers, ET Technorati Tags: TFS 2008 , VSTS 2008 , Code Camp Montreal ......

Hey everyone, please be aware that the VPC provided by Microsoft to evaluation Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server 2008 B2 will expire Nov 1st. If you are using this VM in production and are using the Go-Live licence please plan for this and prepare a contingency plan. See Jeff Beehler's blog for more info and any news on this here VS2008 Beta2 VPCs expiring prematurely Cheers, ET ps. I'm very busy, actually way too busy and I will start posting more soon. Don't despair... Technorati Tags: TFS ......

I just got a nice letter from Microsoft letting me know I got awarded as MVP for the 3rd year in a row. I feel really good about last year and all the stuff I did for the community. I'll try to do as much this year again. I love meeting new people and helping them network or solve their problem (If I can ;-)). Looking forward to talking (virtually) to some of you tomorrow in the Webcast, this autumn at the code camp and devteach and throughout next year. Thanks Microsoft for the 3rd vote of confidence. ......

Well it's been a while since I've last posted, I'm in my eyeballs with stuff to do. We have finally released our internal Team Build offering and I will hopefully soon start my series of post on Team Build. We have just bought a house so getting everything ready running around to see what we need to do, mortgage, boxes, phone numbers, address changes... you know what I mean. I'm preparing my presentations for the fall, I'll be a panelist on the "Ignite your career" Webcast series offered by MSDN ......

Well I can't pass on this news. Knowing Brian a bit by talking with him and having great discussions with him in the last 4 years, he is probably trying to keep this as low profile as possible ;-). Willy already blog it here, and Anutthara broke the news. Brian, let me tell you that as humble as you are, you TOTALLY deserve this well earned title. Check out Anutthara's blog entry for and explanation of what a technical fellow is. Congratulation Brian and keep up the great work on TFS. Cheers, ET ......

Read all about it here. Since Microsoft acquired TeamPlain this spring they have worked hard to incorporate all new features in the product and best feature of all; It's FREE for TFS owners. Cheers, ET PS I swear I'll get to Team Build I'm just sooooo busy ;-). Technorati Tags: Team System, TFS, TeamPlain ......

So I'm still working hard on the build series, I'm up to a 26 page document right now just showing how to create a build ;-). But there are just so much new stuff happening that I'm going to skip to that and go back to document after. The whole Team System stack has been renamed check out Rob Caron's blog entry here for all the names. Essentially Visual Studio Team System 2008 - product name. Next I'm featured here on the Canadian Developer Blog there is a short questionnaire I answered about myself ......

So I haven't blogged in while, I've been so busy I can't tell when it's night or when it's daytime... Well not really but you get the idea. I have been toying about the idea of actually coming up with some content (instead of just reporting other people's content ;-)) and I've decide it was time to do so. In the next few months (weeks if I can kick myself hard enough to do it) I'll write a series of post on Team Build. I've been playing quite a bit with it and I think there is a lot to talk about. ......

If you still haven't upgraded to TFS SP1 because you where reading articles, blogs and forum entries with people have problems then you should now be ready to proceed. Microsoft just released a new version of the GDR Quiescing patch (what's with that name anyway?). Brian talks about it here and you can download the new version here. I'll update my install scripts to use that one and send to my good friend Stephen Borg at Accentient to host them. Cheers, ET Technorati Tags: VSTS, TFS ......

I just received my result this week.

Hello everyone, I've decided to conduct a Full day workshop on VSTS/TFS on Saturday March 24th. We will cover a lot of things ranging form sizing and installation to source control practices all the way to unit testing and performance. It should be a very cool day. If you live in Montreal (or around) and would like to join us in that experience please follow this link for all the information. I will animate in French but if we have questions in English there shouldn't we'll be more than happy to ......

Wow! Exactly what I've been waiting for!! So yesterday Brian Harry blogged about a Server Manager tool he developed on the side and asked us if we taught that was going to be useful as a power tool. Well... Absolutely. Manageability as been...how to say... difficult in V1 with tools like this it will certainly help see if our infrastructure is healthy and how well we do. Those stats will be very important for some of our folks. So I say ... absolutely Brian bring it on. Cheers, ET ......

Whoohoo folks! the long awaited SP for VSTx, Express and TFS is finally out you can get it right here. Also there is a hotfix to apply prior to installing the SP for TFS make sure you read all about it here, essentially it put TFS to "sleep" while patches are installed. There is nothing special to do, just install this hotfix and whenever you apply another hotfix, SP, etc TFS will go to sleep prior to install that's it guys. Happy Patching ET Update: Save some time and space installing the SP by ......

You got Team Suite? Download the trial version here and install over it. TEfDP will automatically adjust to full version see here for details or you can download 3.8 gig and install over TE and it will also adjust itself (I personally prefer the 20 Meg download). Got Team Dev/Arc/Test then you need to buy the full version since it's a new sku on the same level as the other 3. Got Pro, well sorry but you'll need to upgrade to one of the Team Skus and TEfDP is a good one. By the way, TEfDP is free ......

So in the last few days a few good blog entries have appear on TFS. Charles Sterling posted on how to change the product key in the trial or workgroup edition of TFS to the full version, now I knew how to do that (well I taught I knew) but it seems there are more things to do specifically for the workgroup edition have a look here. Next came a great pdf from real world experience of move folks from VSS to TFS (I wish I had written that) from Steven St-Jean it's a good read and I'll make it available ......

Hey everyone, Just noticed my good friend Steven Borg from Accentient posted my TFS Install Scripts (Oct 05). You can get them directly here. The TFS install scripts are scripts I put together to automate as much as possible of the pre-requirement application installations TFS requires; IIS, SQL Server, Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, Service packs, TFS users (Service, report, setup). I hope this helps you install your own TFS with the least amount of work. TFS installation can hard, so I hope those ......

So I just installed Vista RC2 and tried to install Visual Studio on it and kept getting a compatibility issue, I didn't have Windows XP SP2 ... well right! So I started searching for a solution, first put autorun.exe in windows sp2 compat... no go, changed all setup.exe to run in windows XP SP2 compat ... no go. I then stumpled on this blog entry http://www.geekswithblogs.n... I refers to install VS on Windows XP SP1 (same kind of compat issue) but the trick work ......

So we learn stuff everyday... well I hope. Here is a bit of insight on Team Build, specifically the ports that need to be opened for it to work properly in a multi-machine scenario. I have tested this configuration internally and it works great. I did stumbled upon a problem while testing, an error message came up telling me that the build server could only be configured for a single TFS server, and that I should change a parameter on the build server to point to my TFS server. So here is what we ......

So I finally finish going around the world (I had a vacation break for a few weeks and attended a VSTS SDR in Redmond) to eventually end up in good ol Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. At least I was in familiar territory here with my finely colored Canadian money ;-). It was good to re-hook up with Sandman and the Chief for a farewell training session. The training when well and again we had some very good questions. Winnipeg is a very nice, large small city... it's big enough the be a large city 600,000+ ......

So you just finish installing TFS, it works great and you’re about to give out the name to all your devs so they can start using the great new features in TFS but the name of the server uses corporate naming standard and is called rtmtgbs001 that is a great name for the ITO folks they know the scheme and can find that server to patch it and all that but for devs and project manager, and other consumers of TFS data it’s a bit hard to remember and if you have many servers it because quite ......

Well hello everyone, sorry for the long delay in posting the next installment in the series, I’ve been a bit under the weather (see Aaron’s post and my back end did feel that way ;-)) in the first week back and then really really busy. So what did I think of Chennai, the little bit of India that I have seen. Well like I said in the last installment, it’s was big and a tad less cr azy then Cairo. Due to the fact we were completely wiped we decided to come back a day earlier than ......

12:40 (Cairo Time) Day 50 – Last day in Cairo, feels like we have been here way longer than 8 days… We went to Alexandria 2 days ago and got to swim in the Mediterranean Sea that was nice. Alexandria has a cool castle call Quay Bay which is build with the stones of the Alexandria Light house one of the last Wonders of the World remaining before the Pyramids of Giza. We also saw a few catacombs (don’t go if you ever go to Alexandria it’s not worth it). The Alexandria Library ......

11:41 (Cairo Time) Day 47 -- …

Cairo 2100

Good night ;-)

ET

17:30 (Cairo Time) Day 47 – So Aaron started blogging here on GWB and just show you what we went to see last night here. you can go here to view more. There is only one word to describe the pyramids... Grandiose! I wish you were here… Egypt is …. Special!... and hot, did I mention that before ;-) Here is a glimpse.. Cheers, ET ......

Well B3 of TFS is now available on MSDN. I've been installing and testing builds leading to B3 for the last 3 weeks and B3 is solid. There are so many more feature than B2. On of the new cool things is the Source Control Proxy server. This server basically caches files "gotten" by the first user, then all subsequent "get" are super fast. This server is designed to be used in a WAN scenario between two location that share a low bandwidth line. I'm sure you'll like if your in this situation. VSS was ......

I was just reading Marc Lehmann post on Code Coverage and I agree with him that a single pass through your code will give you 100% coverage but it doesn't mean you extensively tested the boundaries of your code. So with this in mind, I'll show you how to setup a link to a database where you can use a table to feed your unit test with all the test cases you need to fully test you code. The unit testing framework of Team System lets you connect to a table and run the same test once for each row in ......

Well this is not really a scoop since it's been blogged about a lot in the last 24 hours by Sam Gentile here Jeff Beehler here and Eric Lee here... but since it's my first post on Geekswithblogs I wanted to let everyone know what my interests where. I love development in .NET. The platform is so empowering its incredible the things you can do with it. .NET 2.0 will be even better and cooler. I have the privilege to be able to work with the Team System product group as part of my daily job, and I ......

13:30 EST – Day 26, on the plane back home from Kokomo, it was a short trip, I left Monday and I’m already going back home. There a was a welcome change of plan that happened yesterday, instead of going to Winnipeg next Monday we are pushing the date to July a week after we come back from India. This will let me spend next week in Montreal, I have been away for the last 3 weeks and this will be great to spend time with my family before the going for another 4 weeks. I should be able to ......

16:30 EST – Day 22, On the plane again after 27h shore leave home. My bags didn’t make it from New York to Montreal but I got them at 9pm yesterday just in time to do some washing and repacking. I’m now on the way to Kokomo Indiana (I know less exotic than New-Zealand and Argentina but I’m sure the people there will be as great as everywhere else). This will be my 3rd stop and the 4th for Sandman and Chief. I think I’m back to the correct time zone (in my body anyway) ......

Thank you for submitting your proposed session(s) for Tech·Ed 2006 via the Tech·Ed 2006 Call for Sessions site. We know crafting a session proposal for Tech·Ed 2006 requires considerable time and thoughtfulness and we sincerely appreciate your efforts in this regard. Capturing your depth of knowledge, skill and passion in a brief written proposal is a considerable challenge. We are most fortunate to have Microsoft partners such as yourself, who are engaged and passionate about educating ......

6:15am (Argentina Time) – Day 17, This Timezone thing is killing me, I’m so confused I don’t know what time it is anymore. We Left New Zealand on Monday the 22nd at 5pm (NZ time) and after 13.5h of flying and 1.5h of layover in Santiago, Chile we arrived in Buenos Aires get that at the same time on the 22nd (Argentina Time). Talk about Back to the Future ;-). We were supposed to fly from Wellington to Aukland and then to Santiago but decided instead to road trip from Wellington ......

Rob tells us that the Basic Authentication scenario will not be supported in V1 here. This scenario is very important to a lot of small/medium business with consultant on the road a lot. But fear not, there are ways around this problem. 1. Use IA it works for most scenario, where I've seen issues is when leaving corporate environment that are protected by firewall (like everyone!). But if you are connecting from home (for example) even behind personal router it works fine.2. Look at teamplain, a ......

Microsoft Application Lifecycle Development Tools: Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server In November, 2005, Microsoft launched Visual Studio 2005, a major new release of its developer tools environment, and the foundation of Microsoft platform development for the next few years. In addition, this marked our entry into the lifecycle tools market, with the addition of Visual Studio Team System and the Team Foundation Server, to support end-to-end system development scenarios. We are ......

6:00AM (NZ Time) Well we made it to Wellingtion, but our luggages are still in transit… No Worries, what it’s important is our presence ;-). Yesterday we went around to visit a bit, Wellington is a very cool city, I reminds me of San Fransisco with 1/10 of the population and with green (trees) everywhere. I don’t have a good picture yet but I’ll post one when I do. It’s a small city, not very dense population wise but very warm (the people not the temperature). And speaking ......

Well it’s 9:30AM EST and 1:30 AM (the next day) in Wellingtion. I’ve been on planes for 14 ½ hours with about 3 hours in airports (not bad). I still have about 5h to get the get the Auckland then a little hop and I’ll land in welligton. The adventure began in Montreal were Aaron and I departed for JFK on an Ambraer 60 seater (I really don’t like that plane). When we got to JFK we had about 1 ½ hours to wait before leaving for LAX. That leg was wayyy better since ......

My two presentation went very well. I’m very happy with the turnout and add a good time with the attendees. What a feeling it is to sit with the likes of Julia Lerman, Kate Gregory, Barry Gervin, Joel Semeniuk, Richard Cambell, Kathleen Dollard, and many many others (51 in total). My talk on Adopting Team System went a bit over since I answered questions during the talk. That’s what I enjoy the most talking with attendees about real problems they are facing and decisions they need to ......

So I will try to post as much as possible about my experience in 4 continents and 7 countries not counting the airports in transit countries. So here is a quick break down of my next 2 1/2 months First New-Zealand land of the hobbits and home to our first stop on the WWT2K6 (World Wide Tour 2006) Next Brazil, followed by Kokomo Indiana (where I will amongst other things give a live MSDN webcast). Following Kokomo, I will go to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and then TechED in Boston. Upon my return from ......

So I will be giving an MSDN webcast on the 30 of May call Adopting Team System. Here is the link to the registration and following is a brief synopsis Do you want to start using Microsoft Visual Studio Team System, but are not sure where to start? If so, this webcast is for you. We discuss various installation scenarios and the differences between the three Visual Studio Team System role-based editions and the suite product. Customization of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server is ......

So I installed TeamPlain on my sandbox to see how it behaved, well let me tell you that this is a cool product. It's all web based and gives you access to your TFS work items, all the reports, your documents on the WSS site and even your source code. You can access those things from either VS or WSS but it's now all in one easily accessible site and it look pretty sweet. Well done guys… I'll definitely recommend it for specific scenarios. You still need a CAL to use the site (so you can't just ......

So my good friend John Lawrence from Microsoft posted a picture of me and my colleague Aaron drinking green beer at the TFS Launch party... check it out here

Not to good looking but tasty none the less.

Cheers,

ET

I happened to be in Redmond today for the official signing of the TFS Box. Here’s me with “the box” J Congratulation guys ......

Kannan as just release the First CTP version of Team Foundation Server Admin Tool  on gotdotnet.  Now that will be a usefull tool if it does what it claims it can do.  I will give it a spin and put an update of my appreciation.

Cheers,

ET

Here is a summary of what happended (not all good as you will see but all in all thumb up!) So this was a Dual Server upgrade while yesterdays one was a Single Server. So we backed up everything like we should before any migration, Followed the manual to the T and well some stuff was less obvious than for the Single Server. So as predicted TFSUpgrade /verify failed on a name that was the same as an upgrade CMMI field so we needed to run WITField.exe to rename the Severity field (after finding were ......

Well hello all, I just finished my first migration of TFS B3R to TFC RC today. It went very well, and the build is much more stable and faster. If you follow the upgrade guide you should be all set. Like Rob likes to say RTFM it goes for the upgrade manual as well. One little thing to note in the upgrade manual it does not mention the fact you should apply hotfix KB912838 before install TFS but it says to do in the install guide. After speaking with my Microsoft contacts it should be applied prior ......

Jeff tells us here about what has happened since October with Team Foundation Server. One important thing to note, you will not be able to install TFS on a Domain Controller anymore, all the Single Server installs I've done for demos and training have been on Single Server VMs with DC. So you have been warned. The friendly names for work items is a welcome change no one likes being called RTG54F!! The move of the Reporting Services on the app tier make sense on an architectural level since all the ......

My good friend Jeff as just announced that the RC of TFS (which will also be “go-live” btw) will be available in early Feb if the world doesn't end before that.  See his full post here.

Whoohoo indeed Jeff.

Cheers,

ET.

For those who are interested Team Foundation Server December CTP is currently available on MSDN under the Developper Tools Visual Studio 2005. I'll give my Impressions next week stay tuned. Cheers, ET ......

Hey it's been a while but I've been busy circling the globe, first the UK, then the launch in San Francisco... I want you to want me... oh what memories hearing cheap trick play that song...Then back to my home base Montreal for a week, then on to New York for the launch there as well. I was manning our boot at both those launch and also did ask the experts in both cities.Today I went to the launch in Montreal it was very interesting getting to talk with the local guys here... and to speak in my ......

So I've been installing the Single Server Versions of Team Fondation Server in Virtual PC quite regularly throughout the life cycle of the product and now that we have final bits for the .NET Framework I am excited that we can now create a pretty stable base and only install incremental TFS builds to test. In my latest VM I've been getting this error on startup: Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: Service Control ManagerEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 7009Date: 11/3/2005Time: 11:54:40 AMUser: N/AComputer: ......

I have been working on a scripted install of Team System for a few weeks now on and off, I was using Notepad++ to edit vbs files and my hta controller app. With the release of Visual Studio 2005 I installed it on my host laptop (It's the first time I install it on my host machine I have been using VMs for the last 2 years). Well I know a lot about VS and have developed with it for a while now. So what was not my surprise when I opened vbs file with VS2K5 and it colored all my vbscript code and even ......

My good friend Joel Semeniuk from Winnipeg has just release the first alpha of his VSTS Process Editor read his post here the tool is on a moderated GotDotNet community. If you have made ANY customization to the TFS methodologies and edited the xml files by hand well you'll love Joel's tool it's all GUI and you can visually see your work item forms as opposed to have to upload the process and create a new project and see if it worked or not. I highly recommend it if you plan on doing any kind of ......

When you get your renewal note from MSDN which you either already got or should get very soon, make sure you verify which SKU you would like to take and know that VSTESA 2005 is not the FULL version of the Team Tools, Team Suite is. There is plenty of debates and information out there on the the pricing scenario and upgrade paths please look at this great two part series from Rob Caron available here and here. Also look here for a view of the various Team SKUs and what you are getting in each of ......

Well, it's official I'm now a Microsoft MVP... VSTS MVP to be exact! You can view my profile here, I'm super excited about this recognition, I've spent countless hours with VSTS last year giving Microsoft feedback and studying how my company will adopt it in the next year. This is an awesome entry in the field of configuration management for Microsoft and I predict a ton of adoption when it ships early next year. I have done many talks both internally and externally about VSTS and a lot of people ......

Ok like promised here are a few thing to do in order to successfully create a Single Server install of Team Foundation Server B3. Follow the documentation available on the DVD and also available here it has been greatly updated since the last release and has some good information. What I used to do was to create a Virtual Machine with Windows 2003 Server SP1 (apply Windows Update) and then promote to a DC. Install IIS, then install SQL Server 2005, Windows Sharepoint Services and Finally the ATDT ......
