Around the world in 65 days (Part 5)

16:30 EST – Day 22, On the plane again after 27h shore leave home.  My bags didn’t make it from New York to Montreal but I got them at 9pm yesterday just in time to do some washing and repacking.  I’m now on the way to Kokomo Indiana (I know less exotic than New-Zealand and Argentina but I’m sure the people there will be as great as everywhere else).  This will be my 3rd stop and the 4th for Sandman and Chief.  I think I’m back to the correct time zone (in my body anyway) and I’ll be staying in the same time zone this week.

Argentina was great, the people there were very hospitable and we had a great time.  As I do more and more of those sessions, I recognize that it’s not about the technology, it’s about the people.  We all want to work better and more efficiently but to do that we need better tools and tools that less us communicate better, this is what Team System it helps people work more efficiently and communicate better.  Does it solve every problem, heck no, but it’s a great V1 I can’t wait to be on some discussions with Microsoft on V2 and see what they are planning on improving on.  When we talk to executives and project manager is when the rubber hits the road, they need convincing, they don’t yet see the value of Team System, but I think we put it well in perspective for them and they “get it” after the first day.  We’ve uncovered an interesting behavior in the integration with project that I will share with you (in a few paragraphs).  After our first day we cover the basics and answer a few internal concerns and we get smiles from then when we show them how Microsoft Project can round trip info from TFS and that devs will have almost nothing to do to get them that info.

Developers really dig the integration, man I’m telling you integration is key here.  I say MORE integration in V2!!

Back to Argentina, Buenos Aires was a very big city similar to Paris in many many ways, I enjoyed walking around town on our only day off there.  We also took a city tour (best way to see a city when you have no time).  I have put a few pictures here for your viewing pleasure.  So I know have an Super Hero alter ego, you know me as the Frenchman, but my other personality as now fully asserted itself in Buenos Aires, I think it was the air there, I’m now Camera Man also when you give me a camera, I have no fear, moving taxis are just an annoyance I toreador then like they weren’t there, Sandman and Chief think I’m crazy, I jump in the middle of the road to take that perfect shot ignoring all danger (well not quite mom ;-)) and as you can see in the picture I’m sharing with you I get some pretty good ones.  So right now, I have 500 pictures of New-Zealand and 300 of Buenos Aires, still plenty of traveling to do.

What I love the most about those trips is the people I meet and the various cultures we interact with.  Argentineans are warm and welcoming and very latin ;-).  Like I said before going about and hearing everyone talking in Spanish was great and we learned a few important words like hola, de nada, gratias and a few more, On Saturday, Luis, his wife and little baby girl brought us to the leather district where we add a great time looking for bags for our wives (Chief and I).  We then had a relaxing lunch with them before coming back home.  The funny thing, as we were eating lunch the owner turned on the TV and the final of the Rugby match of which we saw the Semi Final two weeks ago in Wellington was on (how weird is that) and they looked like they were playing in a field of fog ticker then I’ve ever seen.  I don’t know who won but I sure hope it was the Wellington team for my boys back there.

The feedback we are getting from the various sites is very positive, the folks feel more connected by us going to see them and appreciate our candor and the fact we poke fun at each other as we talk about the technology.  They usually want more and are all eager to start using Team System.  Aaron and I have worked together for the last two years and knew each other well before this world trip but Wayne is fitting right in.  I couldn’t imagine spending 8 weeks on the road with anyone else right now (except maybe my wife ;-)).

Techno babble:  So the default behavior of the mapping between TFS and MS Project when using MSF Agile or CMMI is to not bring down the Start Date and Finnish Date from TFS down in Project so when connecting and bringing down Work Items they are all set to today’s date.  That might be ok the first time you get the TFS tasks and set the start and finish dates by publishing back to TFS.  But the next time you open in project (if you have not saved that project file) you will again be shown today’s date for the start date + duration will calculate finish date relative to that start date.  For a lot of PMs this will not work to good.  So the trick is to change the mapping in TFS for the team project in question to for the two dates so that they are not publish only.  See this post on MSDN forum for a procedure on how to do this.

I’m going to land in Chicago in few minutes but will be back in a soon with more adventures from Kokomo.

The three amigos will be in be in Kokomo this week

Cheers,

The Frenchman “Camera Man” ET.

1:30am EST – Day 23, Just got to my room in Kokomo, Chicago is the most hellish place on earth ;-).  I manage to add a new location to our WWT, Grand Rapids Michigan, we landed there to refull before making it to Chicago.  I then managed to get on plane at 8pm to make the 30 min flight to Indy, but had to wait for 3.5h before leaving… Oh well the joy of air travel.
Around the world in 65 days (Part 4)

6:15am (Argentina Time) – Day 17, This Timezone thing is killing me, I’m so confused I don’t know what time it is anymore.  We Left New Zealand on Monday the 22nd at 5pm (NZ time) and after 13.5h of flying and 1.5h of layover in Santiago, Chile we arrived in Buenos Aires get that at the same time on the 22nd (Argentina Time). Talk about Back to the Future ;-).

We were supposed to fly from Wellington to Aukland and then to Santiago but decided instead to road trip from Wellington to Auckland, So our adventure took us throught most of the North island where we saw beautiful nature vistas.  We also stayed one night in Rotorua and went to a Mauri cultural experience diner (that was really cool).

The team from NZ really enjoyed our talks and had a ton of good questions and suggestions.  Team System is such a big product it’s hard to do it justice in three days.  I also created a local TFS server for them and had a interesting experience to share.  So after installing everything in a VM I figured that the 16G limit on the hard drive would not cut it for their need so I decided to move the database files to another VHD created using VS2005R2 which was 100G in size.  What’s a guy to do then to move the database over, well I unattached them using Sql NaServer Management Studio, moved them and reattached them.  I had to stop IIS, and Reporting Services, TFS Sceduling Service before doing that but it worked out fine.  Now there is more room to grow on.

Navigate here to see a few photos from NZ.

Yesterday was Day 1 Execs and Project Manager, this is the selling day for us at each location, we need to get the buyoff of Execs and PMs and explain the big picture of TFS I think this when pretty well.

Today we are on the Day 2 schedule this is the Developer Day and should be a blast it always is, Devs love VSTS there is not a lot of selling to do ;-).  I’ll tell you though, hearing Spanish all the time here is very interesting, French is my first language and hearing it all the time in Montreal or Paris is no sweat, English is my second language and here it around the world is no sweat even the British or NZ accent are fine, we get used to it.  But Spanish well I don’t know that at all, it sound a bit like french for some words but that’s all.  So for the first time on this trip and not the last I fell like a foreigner ;-).

Oh almost forgot after spending 17 days together we are still friends ;-).  We now have nicknames, Aaron is “The Chief” because he became a Mauri Tribe Chief at our cultural experience diner in Rotorua, Wayne is “The Sandman” because he can fall asleep anywhere (Plane, Car, Hotel chair, etc) the guys just as no problem sleeping any place, any time, anywhere.  Me well I go by ET all the time but I was rebaptised “The Frenchman” by Wayne, I wonder why…

Where in the world are the three amigos today, We are in Buenos Aires.

Cheers for now,

The Frenchman
Around the world in 65 days (Part 3)

6:00AM (NZ Time) Well we made it to Wellingtion, but our luggages are still in transit… No Worries, what it’s important is our presence ;-).

Yesterday we went around to visit a bit, Wellington is a very cool city, I reminds me of San Fransisco with 1/10 of the population and with green (trees) everywhere.  I don’t have a good picture yet but I’ll post one when I do.  It’s a small city, not very dense population wise but very warm (the people not the temperature).  And speaking of temperature, I left home and it was the spring (getting warmer every day) and I landed in the winter (getting colder every day).  It’s now 8 degrees Celcius here (about 50 F).  A lot of things are similar to England as well the driving on the wrong side for one (British will arge the to contrary ;-) of course), 220 V and the city as a very european feel to it.

We will start the training in a few hours that will be fun.  I need to stand up a TFS while here also.
Around the World in 65 days (Part 2)

Well it’s 9:30AM EST and  1:30 AM (the next day) in Wellingtion. I’ve been on planes for 14 ½ hours with about 3 hours in airports (not bad).  I still have about  5h to get the get the Auckland then a little hop and I’ll land in welligton.

The adventure began in Montreal were Aaron and I departed for JFK on an Ambraer 60 seater (I really don’t like that plane).  When we got to JFK we had about 1 ½ hours to wait before leaving for LAX.  That leg was wayyy better since we got bumped into First Class.  Now I understand why it’s called First Class… boss I don’t want to fly economy again! (ya right!).  But this was an awesome experience to say the least.  Four course meal, nice selection of beverage and an independent DVD player with a selection of about 20 movies and the clincher so much leg room I couln’t touch the seat in front me with leg streched.  Now that’s was I call class ;-).

We met the third amigo Wayne in LAX and got delayed because they needed to fill more fuel into the very large plane we are flying to get to Auckland.  They got passengers out too.  Lucky us we are in Business.  Only problem no luggage, our bags didn’t make it on the plane…. We “should” have them delivered to our hotel during the day today… we’ll see.  The plane we are one is a double decker and we are on the top floor.  Nice.

We should be able to start the NZ rollout tomorrow after a day to recoup.  Can’t wait to meet our folks from there and have good VSTS discussions.

For those envious of the Jetset life we will lead in the next 8 weeks don’t forget that those trips are reallllly long and we stay a week in each location.

Where in the world are the three amigos today:  We will be in Wellington in a few hours

Cheers for now, back to trying to sleep (not easy)

DevTeach is over… What fun that was

My two presentation went very well.  I’m very happy with the turnout and add a good time with the attendees.

What a feeling it is to sit with the likes of Julia Lerman, Kate Gregory, Barry Gervin, Joel Semeniuk, Richard Cambell, Kathleen Dollard, and many many others (51 in total).

My talk on Adopting Team System went a bit over since I answered questions during the talk.  That’s what I enjoy the most talking with attendees about real problems they are facing and decisions they need to make for their enterprise or work group.  This product is so big and so cool everyone wants to jump the wagon but they like to talk to someone that as already did it, it reassures them.

Joel’s talk on VSTS Warehouse was very interesting for me because this is one part of TFS I haven’t put much time into and he zipped right to where I needed to be.  Thanks J, and Barry I’m sorry I missed your talk I’m sure you knew where you were thought ;-).  I also had fun being your sidekick at your VSTS Version Control talk.

On of the hightlights needs to be when the Mad Mexican flew in to challenge John “The Pimp” Bristowe to a wrestling match watch it here.

Well another great year for Jean-Rene Roy and crew.  Thank you guys for all your hard work I know it’s not easy.

Well off to New Zeland… Stay tuned for the upcoming adventures of three guys and a VSTS box.

Cheers,
