I've been renewed again this year as a member of this elite cabal of crazies that call themselves Team System MVP!! I feel really happy today, this is always good to know our commitment to the product we love is recognize by our peers, community leaders and Microsoft. This program has really been a blessing for me in the last 5 years I've met incredibly bright, funny, cranky (at times) and very passionate people that I always look forward to seeing and talking too. My professional career has really ......

So I’ve been trying to do some custom build numbering for my Team Build project and was confronted with a lot of let’s say “uninformation” and some great information also. I really didn’t want to create a custom task that I would need to maintain so I set on a long search for the Truth… needless to say I didn’t find it. But here is the information I found that should get you you to the right place. There is a great custom task created by the MSBuild team that used to be on GotDotNet but is now MSDN ......

In case you didn’t know, as part of the slew of information that Microsoft in this week one very cool announcement was made. VSTDE and VSTDBE are now both available to MSDN subscriber that have one of those versions. If you do, make sure you download the one you didn’t have (DBPro if you had Dev and Dev if you had DBPro) and install the other on top of the current VS you have. They functionality of the other version will just become available in VS. It’s as simple as that. Kudos to Microsoft for ......

I feel rely privileged again this year to be awarded for my 4th time as a Team System MVP. This award as great value to me since it recognizes my expertise in a product and my dedication to the community. I spend a lot of time with developers both inside and outside EDS and I can tell you they are always exited to learn about new things they can do with the product. This year is going to be an extremely exiting year with VSTS2010 aka “Rosario” and the .Net Framework 4.0 work going in overdrive. I’m ......

The great DevTeach conference is coming to Montreal this year again from December 1-5 and i’ll be speaking again. I have 2 sessions in the new Team System track: Adopting Team System You have seen the Team System overviews, you are stoked and want to start using the product but you’re not sure where to start? This session is for you, in it we will open the box and look inside, we will discuss the various installation scenarios (solo developer or for a group, hardware vs. Virtual), the difference ......

Hello everyone, With SQL 2008 shipping late last week it was time to try my hands at this scenario. It worked great but with a few things to remember. Here is the lowdown. There are two way to go about in order to install TFS with SQL 2008 1) Fresh install, 2) Upgrade SQL. 1) Fresh Install I used Windows 2008 because this is going to be the prevalent OS to install on when people are going to start fresh or it most likely will. There was a little issue with that install when Windows 2008 RTM’ed back ......

Hey all, it's official, VS and TFS 2008 are available today for download, there are so many new things it's hard to do the product justice in a simple blog. I've had the pleasure of testing and giving Microsoft a lot of feedback on this and future release of VSTS and I'm happy to say they listen to our feedback. Feel free to send me your comments I'll make sure they are aware of them. Jeff as a great post on all the new feature available Visual Studio Team System 2008 ships! so go have a look. Brian ......

I just got a nice letter from Microsoft letting me know I got awarded as MVP for the 3rd year in a row. I feel really good about last year and all the stuff I did for the community. I'll try to do as much this year again. I love meeting new people and helping them network or solve their problem (If I can ;-)). Looking forward to talking (virtually) to some of you tomorrow in the Webcast, this autumn at the code camp and devteach and throughout next year. Thanks Microsoft for the 3rd vote of confidence. ......

Well it's been a while since I've last posted, I'm in my eyeballs with stuff to do. We have finally released our internal Team Build offering and I will hopefully soon start my series of post on Team Build. We have just bought a house so getting everything ready running around to see what we need to do, mortgage, boxes, phone numbers, address changes... you know what I mean. I'm preparing my presentations for the fall, I'll be a panelist on the "Ignite your career" Webcast series offered by MSDN ......

So I'm still working hard on the build series, I'm up to a 26 page document right now just showing how to create a build ;-). But there are just so much new stuff happening that I'm going to skip to that and go back to document after. The whole Team System stack has been renamed check out Rob Caron's blog entry here for all the names. Essentially Visual Studio Team System 2008 - product name. Next I'm featured here on the Canadian Developer Blog there is a short questionnaire I answered about myself ......

So I haven't blogged in while, I've been so busy I can't tell when it's night or when it's daytime... Well not really but you get the idea. I have been toying about the idea of actually coming up with some content (instead of just reporting other people's content ;-)) and I've decide it was time to do so. In the next few months (weeks if I can kick myself hard enough to do it) I'll write a series of post on Team Build. I've been playing quite a bit with it and I think there is a lot to talk about. ......

If you still haven't upgraded to TFS SP1 because you where reading articles, blogs and forum entries with people have problems then you should now be ready to proceed. Microsoft just released a new version of the GDR Quiescing patch (what's with that name anyway?). Brian talks about it here and you can download the new version here. I'll update my install scripts to use that one and send to my good friend Stephen Borg at Accentient to host them. Cheers, ET Technorati Tags: VSTS, TFS ......

Well I've been extremely busy in the last month and have not blogged much, I'm off to Disney for a few weeks, then DevTeach and after that I'll get right back to it. So after everybody and their dogs mentioned you all that VSTS "Orcas" B1 is finally available, I'm just going to say, go here for all the info. There are two (2) different VPC, one is with both TFS and VSTS and the other is only VSTS beware what you download ;-). You will also need the base differencing disk to run those images. All ......

So today an internal Team decided to move to our corporate TFS instance (nothing new there) the crux was that they are running a mix of VB6, VS2003 projects. I say "Hey no problem you guys can use the MSSCCI Provider for TFS and it should work like a charm!" so after our conversation I remembered that I had not tried this at home like they say, I have been using VSTS (2005) and have not worked on a legacy project in a while. So off I go and download the MSSCCI Provider and install it in VM (that ......

Well... it's been a pretty crazy year! here are a few of the highlights ... around the world (literally) in 65 days, 8 countries, 100,000 air miles, speaker at Devteach for the second year in a row, VSTS MVP for the second year in a row, speaker at the first Montreal Code camp, 15 year at EDS and last but probably the best, 20th year with my lovely wife. I don't know where I would be without her... pfeeeww ;-) man I'm tired after reading this again. So what does next year look like... Well I'll probably ......

Whoohoo folks! the long awaited SP for VSTx, Express and TFS is finally out you can get it right here. Also there is a hotfix to apply prior to installing the SP for TFS make sure you read all about it here, essentially it put TFS to "sleep" while patches are installed. There is nothing special to do, just install this hotfix and whenever you apply another hotfix, SP, etc TFS will go to sleep prior to install that's it guys. Happy Patching ET Update: Save some time and space installing the SP by ......

23:00 GMT – Day 45, We have been in Swansea Wales (in the UK) for the last 3 days, The training as gone well again most people are excited about VSTS and can’t wait to be using it. We find interesting deployment opportunities at every locations which makes those trips important for us. Swansea is by the sea, it’s a small but lovely town. We really haven’t much time to wander around being in meetings all days long. We will have a few day Friday and Saturday morning so we’ll ......

6:15am (Argentina Time) – Day 17, This Timezone thing is killing me, I’m so confused I don’t know what time it is anymore. We Left New Zealand on Monday the 22nd at 5pm (NZ time) and after 13.5h of flying and 1.5h of layover in Santiago, Chile we arrived in Buenos Aires get that at the same time on the 22nd (Argentina Time). Talk about Back to the Future ;-). We were supposed to fly from Wellington to Aukland and then to Santiago but decided instead to road trip from Wellington ......

Well it’s 9:30AM EST and 1:30 AM (the next day) in Wellingtion. I’ve been on planes for 14 ½ hours with about 3 hours in airports (not bad). I still have about 5h to get the get the Auckland then a little hop and I’ll land in welligton. The adventure began in Montreal were Aaron and I departed for JFK on an Ambraer 60 seater (I really don’t like that plane). When we got to JFK we had about 1 ½ hours to wait before leaving for LAX. That leg was wayyy better since ......

My two presentation went very well. I’m very happy with the turnout and add a good time with the attendees. What a feeling it is to sit with the likes of Julia Lerman, Kate Gregory, Barry Gervin, Joel Semeniuk, Richard Cambell, Kathleen Dollard, and many many others (51 in total). My talk on Adopting Team System went a bit over since I answered questions during the talk. That’s what I enjoy the most talking with attendees about real problems they are facing and decisions they need to ......

I'm currently planning a worldwide trip to promote TFS and VSTS in my company and I've been super busy with preparation for this. I'll get back to this subject soon in a series called Around the world in 65 days the chronicles of a TFS evangelist. hehe. For now, i've read a great post from Scott Kuhl on helping developer productivity (manager you should read this here). Cheers for now, can't wait to chronicle my trips... ET ......

I just submitted a talk for Tech-Ed 2006 in Boston here is the abstract Adopting Team System You have seen the Team System overviews, you are stoked and want to start using the product but you’re not sure where to start? This session is for you, in it we will open the box and look inside, we will discuss the various installation scenarios (solo developer or for a group, hardware vs. Virtual), the difference between the various Visual Studio SKUs, the adoption rate of all the new features now ......

My good friend Joel Semeniuk from Winnipeg has just release the first alpha of his VSTS Process Editor read his post here the tool is on a moderated GotDotNet community. If you have made ANY customization to the TFS methodologies and edited the xml files by hand well you'll love Joel's tool it's all GUI and you can visually see your work item forms as opposed to have to upload the process and create a new project and see if it worked or not. I highly recommend it if you plan on doing any kind of ......

Well, it's official I'm now a Microsoft MVP... VSTS MVP to be exact! You can view my profile here, I'm super excited about this recognition, I've spent countless hours with VSTS last year giving Microsoft feedback and studying how my company will adopt it in the next year. This is an awesome entry in the field of configuration management for Microsoft and I predict a ton of adoption when it ships early next year. I have done many talks both internally and externally about VSTS and a lot of people ......
