Hello everyone, long time no blog… I’ll try to get back in the game soon but with 2 customer and user group and life in general let’s just say I’m busy. In the meantime I’m passing along this great offer. Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional will launch on April 12 but you can beat the rush and secure your copy today by pre-ordering at the affordable estimated retail price of $549, a saving of $250. If you use a previous version of Visual Studio or any other development tool then you are eligible ......

So I’ve been trying to do some custom build numbering for my Team Build project and was confronted with a lot of let’s say “uninformation” and some great information also. I really didn’t want to create a custom task that I would need to maintain so I set on a long search for the Truth… needless to say I didn’t find it. But here is the information I found that should get you you to the right place. There is a great custom task created by the MSBuild team that used to be on GotDotNet but is now MSDN ......

In case you didn’t know, as part of the slew of information that Microsoft in this week one very cool announcement was made. VSTDE and VSTDBE are now both available to MSDN subscriber that have one of those versions. If you do, make sure you download the one you didn’t have (DBPro if you had Dev and Dev if you had DBPro) and install the other on top of the current VS you have. They functionality of the other version will just become available in VS. It’s as simple as that. Kudos to Microsoft for ......

So someone was bound to do it sooner or later... might as well be me ;-). I got the new shinny Windows 2008 ISO from MSDN and install in a VM. 20 min later I was logging into W2k8. Very nice. I then add the IIS 7.0 feature and following the TFS install guide info about 2008 selected the proper added features ASP.NET HTTP Redirections IIS 6.0 Compatibility Default options Windows Authentication So far so good... I then used my scripts to install SQL 2005, I got the incompatibility prompt for SQL 2005 ......

Hey all, it's official, VS and TFS 2008 are available today for download, there are so many new things it's hard to do the product justice in a simple blog. I've had the pleasure of testing and giving Microsoft a lot of feedback on this and future release of VSTS and I'm happy to say they listen to our feedback. Feel free to send me your comments I'll make sure they are aware of them. Jeff as a great post on all the new feature available Visual Studio Team System 2008 ships! so go have a look. Brian ......

Well it's been a while since I've last posted, I'm in my eyeballs with stuff to do. We have finally released our internal Team Build offering and I will hopefully soon start my series of post on Team Build. We have just bought a house so getting everything ready running around to see what we need to do, mortgage, boxes, phone numbers, address changes... you know what I mean. I'm preparing my presentations for the fall, I'll be a panelist on the "Ignite your career" Webcast series offered by MSDN ......

Well I've been extremely busy in the last month and have not blogged much, I'm off to Disney for a few weeks, then DevTeach and after that I'll get right back to it. So after everybody and their dogs mentioned you all that VSTS "Orcas" B1 is finally available, I'm just going to say, go here for all the info. There are two (2) different VPC, one is with both TFS and VSTS and the other is only VSTS beware what you download ;-). You will also need the base differencing disk to run those images. All ......

Now this is not a shock, I could have predicted that in a heartbeat. But it's still great news. Microsoft has a long way to go before they can compete 1:1 against Adobe in that space. Not giving it to the MSDN Subscriber that have all the other development products was a mistake. Whether we like it or not, as developer these days we then to do a bit of everything and designing interface it one of those jobs. Now I might still create crappy layouts but at least they will look better now that I will ......

There is more and more good training material out there and one thing that works really well for people is the ability to watch someone accomplish a task and comment on how to do it. It's sometime hard to follow from a book and you don't get all the nuances, a good narrator can get a message through much better in my view. I'm about start doing some training material for our folks here and I like listening to others do this to get ideas how to make the message consistant and clear. Eric Lee is a ......

I've been considering my habits when it comes to reading and writing blog posts this morning while drinking my tea. "Should I post about the new version of x? Well... no, I think it was posted n number of times on MSDN blogs and by us geeks here on geekswithblogs.net" So many people are watching the net for breaking news that it makes little sense to post about those myself, but as Guy told me a few weeks ago, not everyone aggregates MSDN blogs or Geekswithblogs.net for that matter so the people ......

So in the last few days a few good blog entries have appear on TFS. Charles Sterling posted on how to change the product key in the trial or workgroup edition of TFS to the full version, now I knew how to do that (well I taught I knew) but it seems there are more things to do specifically for the workgroup edition have a look here. Next came a great pdf from real world experience of move folks from VSS to TFS (I wish I had written that) from Steven St-Jean it's a good read and I'll make it available ......

Well, Code Camp Montreal was a huge success, we add 320 register and about 260 showed up on a Saturday to attend the camp. We had 12 speakers and 15 sessions. In my two sessions I had about 70-80 people and it was great fun. Lots of great questions and interest. As I suspected, about 5% of the people are "actually" using TFS but it still generates a lot of interest, people want to move off of VSS but can't get their employer for small teams to purchase VSTx. I suspect this is the main reason. Another ......

I’m now on the way to Kokomo Indiana (I know less exotic than New-Zealand and Argentina but I’m sure the people there will be as great as everywhere else). This will be my 3rd stop and the 4th for Sandman and Chief. I think I’m back to the correct time zone (in my body anyway) ......

When you get your renewal note from MSDN which you either already got or should get very soon, make sure you verify which SKU you would like to take and know that VSTESA 2005 is not the FULL version of the Team Tools, Team Suite is. There is plenty of debates and information out there on the the pricing scenario and upgrade paths please look at this great two part series from Rob Caron available here and here. Also look here for a view of the various Team SKUs and what you are getting in each of ......

Ok like promised here are a few thing to do in order to successfully create a Single Server install of Team Foundation Server B3. Follow the documentation available on the DVD and also available here it has been greatly updated since the last release and has some good information. What I used to do was to create a Virtual Machine with Windows 2003 Server SP1 (apply Windows Update) and then promote to a DC. Install IIS, then install SQL Server 2005, Windows Sharepoint Services and Finally the ATDT ......
