ISO Mount for Windown 7 and/or Server 2008

Apparently it's hard to locate a free ISO mapper these days. Like most people I've use Microsoft's Virtual CD ROM to mount ISO images on XP and server 2003 machines. This will not work in Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines. Therefore, I recommend people try out magic ISO instead. It's freeware and can be downloaded from the following URL. http://www.magiciso.com/tut

TiVo Premiere Review

I've been a TiVo subscriber for ten years. In fact, my original series one had a serial number in the hundreds and according to my TiVo account I've upgraded every 5 years. However, I was recently considering switching to a DVR from my cable provider, Dish, or Direct TV. After making the leap to the new TiVo premiere model, I'm glad I stuck with TiVo. After one day, I'm enjoying... dual tuner recording; YouTube video; HD quality & support; enhanced search; expanded season pass capabilities; shows...

Xbox 3 flashing red lights... Again!

My son informed me yesterday that we have the notorious 3 flashing red lights on our Xbox 360. This is the third time in three years that we've had this problem. http://support.microsoft.co... I called Xbox support, initiated a repair order, and will be waiting another month before my son can play it again. I'm amazed by the lack of quality hardware in the Xbox. Fortunately they keep repairng it at no cost to me, but I'm getting tired of annual repairs...

MOSS Functional Breakout

A while ago (while still at Microsoft), I created a diagram that provided a functional breakout of the various versions and feature of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. I presented this diagram to customers, user goups, etc. Eventually, I posted it to the internal Microsoft document library (ICE) thinking that someone may want to use it. This morning, I was reading some research from Gartner about Portals and discovered something interesting... They're using my diagram in Microsoft's 2007 SharePoint...

Google's Amazing Crawler

Wow, just 30 minutes after posting about my continuing education... that blog entry showed up in my google search results. Obviously, this wasn't helpful in my search for old articles that I've posted, but it amazed me that their crawler picked it up already

Office 2007 - A simple fix for problems with Word

I recently installed a slew of my normal applications on my personal laptop. Unfortunately this somehow messed up my Office 2007 or at least Word 2007. Problem: Word does not open documents when I double click on them. Instead it opens up empty. When I close it, it crashes, restarts, and repearts the process until Office Diagnostics kicks in (which doesn't find anything). Solution: I found this wonderful post on the MSDN forums. http://forums.microsoft.com...

My new MSDN blog

I finally got around to creating my blog on MSDN. It can be found at http://blogs.msdn.com/ericjo/, but it's currently empty. I plan to migrate this blog there once I get some free time. Also, I will be posting there from now on...

Starting to love Live.com

Over the years all developers have written a favorites tool or site to save our favorites between work and home. Well now Microsoft has a site that can do this for us, http://favorites.live.com/. It also has an import wizard that can upload all of your favorites from any browser! Now here is what really makes this cool in my opinion... There is a gadget at http://microsoftgadgets.com... that you can use add the favorites to your www.live.com homepage! For any of you that have...

Visual Studio Team System Licensing and Pricing

I have been receiving TONS of questions about Team Suite, Team System, etc. So I did some research and found this great Channel 9 interview with Rick LaPlante. Rick is the general manager of Visual Studio Team System. In the interview he responds to customer complaints about VSTS's planned licensing and pricing. He explains 4-6 key decision points that companies can make to decide which product is right for their environment. He also makes a good point about Microsoft changing their product focus...

Interesting survey on applications servers and scripting engines

I received some information about this Port80 survey through the MS email chain. It very clearly shows that ASP/.NET and IIS are rapidly becoming the development platform of choic for many companies. Here are the surveys and the related press release that I'm talking about. I have to say that I'm rather surpised by the numbers, but also very excited. I guess more people need to get introduced to blowery's HTTP compression module to get the numbers up for HTTP compression. I for one, have started...
