Configuration of Hyper-V and creation of VMs

In continuing with the post that I started last week, this week I focus on how I used PowerShell to install Hyper-V on Windows 8 and then create all necessary items to continue the creation of the SharePoint lab running on Hyper-V on Windows 8. First thing, in all situations I started PowerShell as Administrator. And yes, many of this items can be done and worked on through the GUI. But, the point is how do I automate. Also, assumptions here are you have a licensed version of Windows 8, and your ......

SharePoint 2010 Information Worker VM available for download

If you interested in a test drive of the technologies around the Wave 14 launch, take look at the VM made available from Microsoft. It is a very well rounded option to explore the new products. 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine Note: It is important to understand you will need a system with Hyper-V to import this VM and get it off and working. Also, make sure you keep a copy of the original unpacked VM as this is based on a trial version of the OS (time bombed) ......

Creating a SharePoint Demo/Dev Lab using Hyper-V on Windows 8. The Overview.

In the last number of days, I have come across the release of the Microsoft Office Division Demo VMs. While a great asset, it is also quite large and it consumes a lot of resources, this being said as I have a Lenovo W530 with 32GB RAM, and 3 Hard Drives. The download is a 56GB set, then expanded it comes to 220GB. That is just the storage piece. Then in order to get all VMs running, it requires 42GB RAM … not quite what I wanted in the end, but still useful in a given situation. That brought me ......

Microsoft Office Division Demos: First Look at the Office 365 SharePoint Online Demo site

It took close to 10hrs to provision, below are some screenshots of what is the generated content. More details and info to come… but for now, make sure you check the email you will receive from the system once the platform is fully provisioned (otherwise you will go crazy getting logged on) and you do not want to disrupt the process of getting the packs in place. First thing, log on … Next, check your Office 365 dashboard … notice the area in the red rectangle, I am thinking that is due (based on ......

Microsoft Office Division Demos: Office 365 Provisioning

A couple of items to know and understand about this. One is the overall setup you will have completed, and then the other is the time it takes. Overall Setup Important to understand you will be working with a new trial tenant, you can’t use an existing one. Also, the tenant is an E3, that means $20 month/user if you decide to move from trial to permanent. Time to provision Here is what this looked like at around 1PM today … This is what it looks like close to 9hrs later … When you received the email ......

Microsoft Office Division Demos: First Impression

I came across the following information on twitter today: “Microsoft has made available a demo environment for the Microsoft Office platform”. What is this, you may ask? Well it is a smorgasbord demo environment!! It includes Microsoft Office, Lync, Exchange, SharePoint, and all in the 2013 stack. You get two possible options, one is to create a demo Office 365 site, the other is to download a set of VHDs. The initial details on this … If you chose to download the VHDs, you can download with demo ......

Site Directory in SharePoint 2010

Sometimes there are so many changes to the environment in which we work and live in that something will escape our attention. In discussing functionality with a client today, the topic of Site Directory came up and the comment of “well, we use it but it is too bad it is not available in 2010” was made … and huge sense of huh?!? came to me. Well, the item that escaped me came to light (and I know there are others). So researching about it was not only an option it was/is my duty. Found an excellent ......

The path to MCSE:SharePoint. The Overview.

There have been some changes to certifications recently. And with that new challenges and requirements. In the past we had MCTS and MCITP or MCPD on a specific product and that was it, now the story is somewhat different. You will need to not only know the product (yes, I am one that still focuses on knowing a product not the test) but also the environment on which it sits or lives (therefore Windows Server and supporting services). The requirements for MCSE: SharePoint now take you through the MCSA:Windows ......

SharePoint Saturday Cincinnati Presentation: Difference between learning and training

The difference between learning and training from Enrique Lima ......

Speaking at SharePoint Saturday Cincinnati

I will be not only attending SPS Cincinnati, but also speaking. And I am very happy and excited about it! The topic: The difference between learning and training: Creating a SharePoint based Learning Management System The description: Training and learning have been defined as synonyms by many organizations. The difference is, training has focused on a classic and traditional model. Learning on the other hand, refers to achieving something from the receiving side of the story, not just delivery. ......

Going from “domain\username” to Display name in SharePoint

While at a client location this week I ran into the situation of their SharePoint deployment recognizing a handful of people by their Display Name and others (a lot more) by their “domain\username” account. And since they had User Profile in place they felt something was just not right, and if you combine that and the fact most of the information available around that issue tells you it is a profile issue, you can understand the frustration of going back to the sync process and correcting in AD, ......

Is SharePoint really a 3 role environment? An Overview. Part 1 of 5

Let me clarify what I mean by “3 role” environment. When looking at the division of roles with products, solutions or environments, it has been very normal to break it down into IT Pros (Admins), Developers and End Users. And many approach SharePoint in the same style. Does it fit? Sure. Is it the most effective approach? HECK NO! Let’s look at it piece by piece. Now the question is where do we start? We need to redefine this. In all cases leaving it as IT Pros, Developers and End Users is too broad. ......

A follow up to installing a Dev SharePoint 2010 environment on Windows 7: Using the Farm Configuration Wizard Part 1 of 2

Sometime ago, say around mid April, 2011 I posted about Installing SharePoint 2010 on Windows 7 by going in a different path than using the standalone installation. This post is about what happens after the installation and initial configuration of your Windows 7 “development farm” gets the bits, and goes through the Central Admin and management perspective to get you to the first screen that says “Hi, SharePoint here, would you like to play a game of chess” (yeah, it does not really say that, but ......

Nice to have tools for the SharePoint IT Pro

Coming from SPC a couple of weeks ago, during the keynote there was a demo on some great Visio Diagrams. It was created using the following: http://visiospfarmaddin.cod... Expect a post here in the next week or so on how to configure it. Another great tool I came across is targeted to those who are becoming familiar with PowerShell for SharePoint, and also if you want to use PowerShell with SharePoint Online. It is a Command Builder, you pick the verbs and nouns as you would regularly do with ......

Speaking at the MCT Summit in San Francisco, Oct. 19th-21st

As an MCT it is always exciting when I travel to conferences because it becomes a reunion. Well, one more chance this year to make it so, but this time (unlike the last MCT Summit) I am also presenting. Thanks to Chris Harrison (@GeekTrainer) for the gentle nudge! Follow @MCTSummitNA too! The topics I will be presenting are (at least the ones I got confirmation on): Requirements Management: From Vision to Mission to Success Session Level: 300 Team Foundation Server and SharePoint Technologies have ......

Requirements Management: From Vision to Mission to Success Presentation at SharePoint Saturday The Conference

Yesterday I presented at SPSTC, had an absolute blast, and I truly hope the attendees to my session did as well! That was my requirement! We discussed the reasons for failed requirements management, scope creep and other pitfalls. But the main goal behind this is how to enable an effective Requirements Management Engine by using SharePoint Technologies and Team Foundation Server. Keep posted as there is much more to come in this space about that thought process. In the meantime, here is the deck ......

Does Visual Studio LightSwitch have a place in the SharePoint space?

Recently, I have found myself using Visual Studio LightSwitch more and more. And needless to say, it got me thinking about a strategy for LightSwitch in a SharePoint environment. Yes, the product positions itself as a tool to develop LOB apps in a rather fast fashion. There will be those that will deem it as a prototype tool, many RAD tools end up being that. But, LightSwitch had this “je ne sais quoi” about it. Actually, I feel I know what it is. If you are still with me, step into this thought ......

Why use SharePoint Technologies with Team Foundation Server?

This is a recent question I ran into on the MSDN TFS Forums. Made me think why I use it and how to make it effective. Here is what my response to this was … “My #1 justification is the fact that when you are looking at TFS source control is not all it does. TFS has the benefit of enabling a solutions team with different roles the right level of visibility. Not everyone will use Visual Studio, for example project managers. In many cases Visual Studio can intimidate the individual. When deployed with ......

Great Finds: FILESTREAM with SharePoint 2010

This has been an interesting topic to have discussions around planning storage and storage requirements organizations need to consider. FILESTREAM provides a means to consider storage of unstructured data on the File system (specifically NTFS). As we know SharePoint lends itself to allow storage of large binary data, considering FILESTREAM gives us an option of using commodity storage for binary form unstructured data. Again, another way in which SQL Server and SharePoint work together. The SharePoint ......

Great Find: Database Maintenance Guidance Document for SharePoint 2010 Products

Over the last couple of weeks I have been discussing with clients and peers the proper way of managing the database side of a SharePoint deployment.

Yesterday, Microsoft released the official version of that guidance.

You can get that here

Installing SharePoint 2010 on Windows 7 without killing kittens in the process.

First, let me clarify the “killing kittens” statement. A couple of years back, I had a chance of attending a sessions presented by Todd Klindt and Shane Young on SharePoint Installation and to raise awareness of how little control, and not to say the limitations, of installing in Standalone mode, they would state “Everytime a SharePoint Standalone Installation happens, God kills a kitten”. Ok, now on to the rest of the purpose of the post. Assumption: SQL Server 2008 R2 is already installed on the ......

SharePoint Learning Resources

The last 6 to 8 months have been a blur. They have gone fast! Back in June I took part in a group that was creating content for Microsoft Learning to have it be their Microsoft Official Curriculum lineup for SharePoint 2010. In that process I noticed there was something different about SharePoint 2010 when compared to the wealth and quality of documentation that had been available when SharePoint 2007 was out. There is a lot of it! There is of course the MOC Offerings, and the material I worked on ......

How do you automate a SharePoint 2010 deployment?

In the last couple of months SharePoint traffic (consulting, training and speaking) has picked up. And with that also the requests for deployments. There are good, great, bad and really bad things around this. But that is for another topic. However part of the good and great has been the fact of organizations wanting to do a proof of concept deployment (even when WSS or MOSS has been deployed). We can go through a session (Microsoft has the SDPS concept, SharePoint Deployment Planning Services) of ......

SharePoint 2010 and Windows Server Backup

A couple of months ago, a friend found a bit of information on TechNet that has proven to be quite useful. See, I am of the opinion SharePoint allows for smaller deployments to be made, and with that said, I am talking about SharePoint Foundation 2010 being used for the most part. But truly the point here is not to discuss whether or not a deployment of SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010 is right or not. The fact is they do take place and happen. And information will reside there. ......

Creating a Web Application using Central Administration for SharePoint Foundation 2010

A couple of days ago, I posted the general steps to create a Web Application using Central Administration for WSS 3.0. Now we are back from the past, and moving into SharePoint Foundation 2010. Assumptions made here, you have access to the Central Administration tool, either by remotely accessing the site or by achieving access through RDP to the server. First, we land at the main window for the Central Administration tool. Once there, you will click on the Manage Web Applications on the Application ......

Creating a Web Application using Central Administration for WSS 3.0

Knowing fully we are now in SharePoint Foundation 2010 territory, I am going back in time. There are still questions around how to configure or create a Web Application and then a Site Collection using WSS 3.0. The questions have come up with companies moving to Team Foundation Server 2010 and not having had experience configuring WSS 3.0. And in many cases they have found in being the “go to” person for anything and everything that has to do with the TFS 2010 deployment you have done. Assumptions ......

What am I reading?

My reading focuses very much around the technologies I work with. SharePoint 2010: Architecture and Planning information

Recently I have been delivering Design and Planning Sessions at client sites, and as of recent SharePoint 2010 has been part of that mix. After the activity that goes on during those sessions getting towards the end of them is always a cross roads for clients. Why? Because it is time to kick the wheels. If I am looking for information that is worth while and a great conversation starter, my landing point ......

Something about Property Management or … the understanding of SharePoint Admins/roles ?!?

When I talk about SharePoint, for some reason it comes to my mind as if it were property management and all the tasks associated with it. So, imagine you have a lot ( a piece of land of sorts), you then decide there is something you want to do with it. So, you make the choice of having a building built. Now, in order to go forward with your plan, you need to check what the rules/regulations are. Has is it been zoned residential, commercial, industrial … you get the idea. This to me sounds like Governance. ......
