Configuration of Hyper-V and creation of VMs

In continuing with the post that I started last week, this week I focus on how I used PowerShell to install Hyper-V on Windows 8 and then create all necessary items to continue the creation of the SharePoint lab running on Hyper-V on Windows 8. First thing, in all situations I started PowerShell as Administrator. And yes, many of this items can be done and worked on through the GUI. But, the point is how do I automate. Also, assumptions here are you have a licensed version of Windows 8, and your ......

Creating a SharePoint Demo/Dev Lab using Hyper-V on Windows 8. The Overview.

In the last number of days, I have come across the release of the Microsoft Office Division Demo VMs. While a great asset, it is also quite large and it consumes a lot of resources, this being said as I have a Lenovo W530 with 32GB RAM, and 3 Hard Drives. The download is a 56GB set, then expanded it comes to 220GB. That is just the storage piece. Then in order to get all VMs running, it requires 42GB RAM … not quite what I wanted in the end, but still useful in a given situation. That brought me ......

Tidbits on Installing the SQL Server 2012 BI Tools for VS 2012

As I was installing the newly released tools, and catching up on updates for a new system, I ran into the following situation. When it came to going through the dialog screens to install the new tools, under Installation Type, it came down to two options. Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2012 was one, the other, Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2012. I decided to select to Add features (why? well, instinct I guess). And I went forward with that choice through the rest of ......

The Red Gate Guide to SQL Server Backup and Restore Book Review.

Earlier this summer I was reading the SQL Backup and Restore book by Shawn McGehee published by Simple Talk Publishing. There were many things that caught my interest and how this book was different from other books I have seen on the topic. One of the first things is the author did not shy away from explaining recovery models and their impact or effect on the backup strategy. Knowing Red Gate has a tool for Backup and Restore, I was expecting this to be central to the writer’s story. Yet, it wasn’t! ......

Backup Tool for SQL Azure

For those that attended TechEd NA 2011 last week in Atlanta it should be no surprise that more and more companies are betting on the Azure platform, whether it is Windows Azure or SQL Azure. There have been developments, changes and improvements for every aspect of the Windows Azure platform in general. And with that tools from 3rd parties to enhance or extend the experience. That is the case when we look at SQL Azure Backup from Redgate. A way to simplify and sync your SQL Azure data to local SQL ......

Great Find: Database Maintenance Guidance Document for SharePoint 2010 Products

Over the last couple of weeks I have been discussing with clients and peers the proper way of managing the database side of a SharePoint deployment.

Yesterday, Microsoft released the official version of that guidance.

You can get that here

Source Control from red gate software summary review

I have used Source Control since the first release, and even then it was a great option for bringing source control for the DB. Well a great tool just got better and better rounded in the process. Again, the integration with multiple repositories like SVN or in my case TFS is great. What makes it even better is the near zero interaction a DBA would have to have with Visual Studio in order to drive the solution from managing a few stored procedures or tables to driving a database change management ......

Database Development and Source Control

I have been working with Database Development and the aspects that come with it, the pain and the joy of moving from Dev to QA and then on to Production. Source Control has a place in Dev, and that is where the baselines should be established. Where am I going with this? I have been working with Redgate’s Source Control 3.0, and I am seeing some features that are great for the process of moving from Dev to … well something that allows for quite a level of control. We are not only talking about scripting ......

Installing the AdventureWorks OLAP Sample Database

Once the installer for the AdventureWorks Community Sample Database has finished, we then need to complete the process (not mandatory, but nice to do to play with the OLAP content). The first thing we need to do is make sure we note the location of the script files and samples. The path if you are working with SQL Server 2008 R2 is as follows: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Samples\Ad... 2008R2 Analysis Services Project\enterprise” I am working with the developer edition, ......
