Appsense has released AppSense Management Suite 7.1, now includes 64-bit and Vista support

AppSense provides User Environment Management solutions that personalize and optimize virtual and physical user environments. User Environment Management is the ability for users to have a consistent, contextual and responsive working environment regardless of the way the environment is delivered to them and to make this easily manageable by IT. Whether delivered via Citrix , Terminal Server, Virtual Desktops, Streaming, Blade PCs or physical desktops, AppSense solutions ensure consistent, contextual and responsive environments to all users all the time.

AppSense Management Suite Version 7.1 extends the reach of User Environment Management by supporting mixed architecture implementations consisting of both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

AppSense technology can also be installed on Windows Vista desktop PCs with this release, bringing enhanced environment management capabilities to Vista users. The inclusion of enhanced reporting and auditing of user environment activities provides visibility into how the environment is being used, enabling a more proactive approach to managing the user experience.

Microsoft Windows Vista - Known Issues with Streaming Applications with Citrix

Another KB from Citrix CTX112824

Summary

This document outlines several issues and any known workaround that users of Microsoft Windows Vista must be aware of in conjunction with the following Citrix products:

• Citrix Streaming Client 1.0

Citrix is committed to ensuring compatibility with the latest Microsoft products.

Citrix will supply best effort support for Windows Vista in versions of the Streaming Client currently in mainstream maintenance as follows:

• Citrix will offer workarounds for issues reported for the Streaming Client in conjunction with Windows Vista.

• For issues where practical workarounds are not available, Citrix will make a best effort to supply hotfixes to address those issues.

Full support for Windows Vista is planned to be provided in a maintenance release scheduled for mid-2007.

This document will be updated as new information becomes available.

Issues

Streaming Client 1.0

• Streamed applications cannot be launched through Desktop or Start Menu shortcuts. This is due to Program Neighborhood Agent not being able to handle the .pnagent file extension from the 10.0 client.

• Based on the first issue, FTA does not work on Vista for both ICA and Streaming applications.

• The CDF driver does not load on Vista 64-bit for the Streaming Client.

• Application Compatibility support is very limited on Vista for this initial release. Office 2003 and Office 2007 suites have been tested, but other applications have not been tested at this time.

Workaround

When using Vista, launch streamed applications directly from the Program Neighborhood Agent.

More Information

There are other minor issues that will be addressed by the maintenance release scheduled for mid-2007.

For known Vista issues with the 32-bit Presentation Server Client, see CTX112067 – Microsoft Windows Vista - Known Issues.

Ericom Announces Microsoft® Windows Vista Support in latest PowerTerm® WebConnect 5.51

Ericom Announces Microsoft® Windows Vista Support in Latest PowerTerm® WebConnect Release

A alternative to Citrix ® Presentation Server, PowerTerm WebConnect provides secure access to applications residing on Windows Terminal Servers, Virtual Desktops and legacy host systems. PowerTerm WebConnect empowers organizations with the ability to address everyday IT challenges, such as reducing the cost of managing applications and desktops, business continuity, IT optimization, and privacy of information.

PowerTerm WebConnect 5.5.1 Features and Enhancements include:

Microsoft® Windows Vista Support
In addition to current Windows and Linux desktop support, PowerTerm WebConnect provides secure access to Windows Terminal Server and legacy host applications from Vista desktops.

triCerat – Universal Printing
PowerTerm WebConnect provides the option to seamlessly integrate with triCerat ScrewDrivers® for universal printing capabilities.

Enhanced Microsoft Active Directory and Novell eDirectory Support
PowerTerm WebConnect automatically identifies directory users and groups – saving significant time in the initial PowerTerm WebConnect setup.

Thin Client Management
In addition to current thin client support for XPe and Linux thin clients, administrators can now include and manage CE based thin clients with the PowerTerm WebConnect Admin Tool.

SSL VPN Integration
PowerTerm WebConnect integrates with leading SSL VPN providers for secure end-to-end enterprise application access, providing organizations with a secure Server Based Computing environment that is easy to administer for mobile workers and business partners.

Server Scalability & Stability - RTO TScale®
For enhanced Terminal Server scalability and stability, PowerTerm WebConnect provides the option to incorporate RTO's TScale memory & CPU optimization – enabling applications to run more efficiently, use less memory and generate less page file activity. This allows servers to support more users with fewer servers.

PowerTerm WebConnect Server Clustering
PowerTerm WebConnect now provides the ability to manage multiple PowerTerm WebConnect servers from a single management tool.

Two-factor authentication security - RSA SecurID®
For an additional layer of security, PowerTerm WebConnect integrates with RSA SecurID for two-factor authentication.

This latest release of PowerTerm WebConnect also introduces new licensing options with the availability of subscription and concurrent user licensing.

click for source

The 64-bit editions of Windows Vista—available for all editions of Windows Vista except Vista Starter

The 64-bit editions of Windows Vista are not for everyone, and require a system with a 64-bit processor and 64-bit system drivers. Confirm you system, applications, and devices are compatible with a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista before installing.

Memory specifications

All editions of Windows Vista 64-bit provide increased memory support beyond the standard 4 gigabytes (GB) available with 32-bit editions. Refer to the specific edition of Windows Vista 64-bit to determine maximum memory capacity.

Microsoft Enables New Ways to Deploy Windows Vista

Microsoft Enables New Ways to Deploy Windows Vista
Q&A: New options to license desktop virtualization and diskless PCs give Windows Vista Enterprise customers more choices, says the director of Microsoft's Windows Business Group.

For many IT professionals within large organizations, maintaining control over their desktop environments is becoming an increasingly tall order. The cost of deploying and administering PCs – sometimes tens of thousands of PCs – across an enterprise can be significant, especially without the proper infrastructure in place to aid in the automation of these tasks. Add to that the growing complexity created by more mobile and temporary workers as well as new data security and compliance requirements – such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA in the United States – in regulated industries, and it is little wonder that some large enterprises are exploring alternative approaches to traditional desktop management.

With the combination of Window Vista Enterprise Edition and the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, customers can secure PCs, centralize applications and increase productivity while decreasing deployment costs. In addition, the advent of fast networking and virtualization has opened the door for large enterprises examining new architectures that centralize Windows. Last week, at the Microsoft Management Summit 2007 (MMS 2007), Microsoft detailed the upcoming availability of licensing for two new centralized architectures based on Windows Vista Enterprise Edition. For details on the new offerings and what they mean to customers, PressPass spoke with Microsoft’s Scott Woodgate, director in the Windows Business Group.

Scott Woodgate, Director, Microsoft Windows Business Group

PressPass: At MMS 2007, you disclosed additional deployment options for Windows Vista. What are these changes designed to address?

Woodgate: Some of our larger, more highly managed and heavily regulated customers have been asking us for more new Windows Vista deployment models and licensing so they can see how well nascent architectures based on virtualization and fast networking function within their environments. We are responding by adding two more options to the numerous ways customers can deploy and manage Windows Vista Enterprise. These two new options will enable our customers to begin testing centralized desktops and diskless PCs in their production environments alongside their existing deployment model and determine which combination provides the right mix of centralized IT control and end-user flexibility for their respective businesses.

PressPass: What exactly are the changes you announced?

Woodgate: For Software Assurance customers using Windows Vista Enterprise, we’re adding two new ways to license and deploy the operating system. They are:

1) The license right to use Windows Vista on diskless PCs

2) The availability of a subscription license called Windows Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktops (VECD) which allows customers to use Windows in virtual machines centralized on server hardware.

PressPass: What are diskless PCs? How do customers benefit from running Windows on a diskless PC, and how does it work?

Woodgate: We think of a diskless PC as simply a PC that runs Windows but does not store Windows or data locally because it does not have a hard drive. The customers that have been requesting diskless PCs tell us they want the ability to move their Windows data and applications to centralized storage hardware such as a Storage Area Network (SAN), while still maintaining the local computing characteristics and experience of a PC.

We are working with our partners so they can provide the software to enable diskless PCs and they will likely enable two different scenarios for customers. In the first scenario, each employee’s hard drive is stored individually on centralized storage hardware. In the second scenario, shared images are used by a group of users. Our licensing enables both of these scenarios so that customers can work with our partners to determine if these are valuable architectures within their desktop environment.

Citrix Whitepaper - Accelerating Microsoft Windows Vista Migrations with Citrix Presentation Server 4.5

Citrix Whitepaper - Accelerating Microsoft Windows Vista Migrations with Citrix Presentation Server 4.5

For many organizations, it is not a question of “If” they will migrate to Windows® Vista™, but “When”. This is causing companies to start asking the difficult questions such as: When will their mission-critical applications support <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Vista? When will enough of their PCs be upgraded to meet system requirements? When can they complete regression testing and workarounds for any uncovered compatibility issues? When can they get the budget and IT cycles to make all of this happen?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

What if there were ways to circumvent these challenges and deliver any application to any client? What if the same applications in use today could be delivered to users of Vista machines –without requiring native Vista support? What if clients that did not meet the system requirements for the 2007 Microsoft Office system could access all the newest applications anyway? What if DLL conflicts and other compatibility challenges became non-issues? Migration would be much faster, easier, and more affordable.

Recent developments in the application virtualization and application streaming capabilities of Citrix Presentation Server™ 4.5 can be leveraged to accelerate adoption of Windows Microsoft Vista.

This white paper describes how Presentation Server 4.5 can be used to help companies simplify and accelerate their migration to Windows Vista by using Presentation Server to deliver both older legacy applications which are not Windows Vista compatible, as well as newer applications that are being introduced with the Vista rollout, such as the 2007 Microsoft Office system. This paper will explain how Presentation Server can be of benefit for both sets of applications to ensure that your Vista deployment is as fast, cost-effective and painless to the company and end-users as possible. This paper explores the new features of Presentation Server 4.5 which enable applications to be delivered to end-users for both online and offline use. Additionally, this paper will discuss how Presentation Server applications integrate with the Windows® desktop to allow users to work seamlessly between both locally installed and Presentation Server applications, whether they are virtualized or streamed.

Among the four updates Microsoft pegged as "recommended, important" today, are :

Usual monthly revamp of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) and Outlook 2007 or 2003 Junk email filter (KB931766) or (KB931764)

Two others that are slightly more interesting are:

Windows Media Format 11 SDK (software developer's kit) code (KB929399). Microsoft said that the update corrected a problem that some portable music players had in synchronizing data with subscription services.

Subscription music services cannot extract metering data from portable devices that support metering. This problem occurs when the services try to synchronize metering data on a client computer that is running the Microsoft Windows Media Format 11 Software Development Kit (SDK) and Microsoft Windows XP.

click for more information
