Summary of Q&A for Terminal Services / Microsoft TechEd IT Forum 2006 - Europe -

Hosted by Alex Balcanquall - Product Manager Terminal Services - Microsoft

Well done Alex, many thanks really good session about 1hour 15 minutes and took questions from the floor.

1. Are there any plans for Streaming Media Support in Terminal Services? A. No plans for streaming media

2. What is Advanced Printing? A. There is no advanced printing, we support failback driver

3. How can I customise Icon / Remote Program launch in the Website? A. Web access is used to create an RDP file and can be called via activex
(Only seamless programs currently supported in BETA - remote desktops will hopefully be added)

4. Will there be any session moving support in Longhorn Terminal Services? A. No solution right and there will not be a solution in the current future
this would also require major changes in kernel

5. Does Virtualising have any effect on scaling? A. TS is not good on Virtual Server or VM, main reason is because of context switches
Up to 80% reduction, hypervisor is going to make it better but not fix it.

6. How can you publish from multiple servers? A. We don't have a publishing feature we have remote programs, session directory is about how you reconnect it’s not a load balancer.

7. Will the RDP files work from the web based on file association? A. A file association type is created when a remote program is installed as a MSI packages and set in take over mode
this changes the association types and then runs the RDP client if that association type is requested.

8. Where do you store the passwords for TS Sessions? A. Terminal Services don't store password we put them in credential manager

9. I have a Windows 2000 server environment and licensing 200 users I want to upgrade to 5000 user upgrade any internal or external users how can I do that when they are not concurrent? A. Licensing will not change, Microsoft don't have a concurrent license model and will not have a concurrent license model, we will not do an associated license model again.

10. Can I view the license count? A. Longhorn will have a TS license GUI and will be available beta 3. Q. Does it need a schemer change? A. (Don’t now)

11. Using Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC what would you suggest I install? A. Windows Fundamentals is a locked down and cut down version of windows XP to run on Legacy PC's A. I would install SA on your desktop operating system, RDP Client, Citrix Client, Terminal emulator

12. Any updates to RDP in the mean time? A. A new version of RDP client will be coming out via windows update service very shortly.

13. How does Microsoft do seamless? A. We open the desktop and then the application that is requested. We then clip using x,y of the outside space of the application frame, we do not do z ordering in RDP, if you resize screen size we will only clip as need to the minimum size of the seamless application being displayed.

14. Is printing going to be Universal in Longhorn TS? A. Currently we now the customer have issues with printing and to date we have improved the spooler and it is much more reliable, we have also improved the print driver queue by isolating it to each driver and user, printing now also support QOS tagging. Can not comment if we will have a universal model in the future.

15. Any Audio support update? A. Yes we have enhanced the Audio block compressor

16. What is the list of Supported plug and play devices? A. good well spotted, you can use WPD (mobile portable devices, media players, cameras, point of service devices 136 devices things like HIBS and handheld scanners), basically we have updated the user mode framework compliance with vista and longhorn. At the ioctal driver layer on local machine and reflect it as long as the PNP inf has been updated to support the framework by the vendor. In theory we should be able to support any PNP device not just USB devices. Smart Phones are awaiting for an Active Sync update but we are ready for supporting them also.

17. Do you now support Smartcard Authentication? A. Yes standard smartcard + credit SSP smartcard support unified for vista and longhorn

18. We also support and have included full auditing in the TS Gateway for Troubleshoot and Security

19. Can all the default folders in the user profile be diverted in Longhorn?  A. As far as I know yes all the default folders in a longhorn user profile can be diverted

20. How can I encrypt the client files on the client OS? A. Bit locker should be used for encryption

21. Are you going to be doing any integration with Microsoft Whale product? A. You bet ya. We are working with whale for application integration. We are also working with Citrix to provide advanced integration and cache support as well as other features.

22. Terminal Services Gateway in a DMZ can I run everything on the one server? A. Yes currently to install TS Gateway you need IIS to allow it to install, with Longhorn the Roles install the binaries as needed not all at the beginning and currently we have not defined the product SKU's for Longhorn

23. In a 64bit environment you need approx 1.3 to 1.7 times’s the memory per user when launching an application.

24. If you are having network performance issues getting data on and of the server I suggest that you look at the scaleable network pack

Charles, thanks for the great info!
Here is the question I would have asked:

How much is Terminal Services Application Remoting in general, and WPF remoting in particular, part of Microsoft's Software-as-a-Service vision for the future?

I guess that next time I'll just have to be there to ask in person :)
Dan
