I have no idea what motivates some folks. Probably some kind of latent masochistic tendencies or something. Guest, obviously not his/her real name, (and to paraphrase the bard, an anonymous coward by any other name...) felt obliged to comment on my article relating the tale of our recent database migration attempt.
No CRM system is without its faults. As with all software, its impossible to envision the demands 10 years down the road.
Well duh! For the record, I wasn't slagging on Navision as a whole. In fact, the very first paragraph of my article extolled some of the virtues of the system that keep my end-users happy. A happy user is a quiet user. Quiet users don't call me.
The end-user will almost always up the ante with requirements.
Guest's insight into the mind of the end-user is nothing short of astonishing.
How well the system was designed in the beginning will prove how well it is in the end as it grows beyond the first set of requirements. I must say, Navision, does this quite well.
This is a tricky one. Navision, out of the box, fits this description. Our highly customized version is only as good as the implementation of those customizations. This is independent of the base Navision system and highly dependent on the skills of your Navision “partner“. Even more important than the skills of the developers is the integrity of the partner organization itself and their willingness to push back and tell you when a customization is a recipe for disaster. Ours didn't. They took the money and wrote the code.
The ease with which you can customize Navision is a double-edged sword
So there may be a few migration hurtles to overcome.
Oops. Your Freudian slip is showing. Hurtle - to fling with great force. Ya. I can see that. I wanted to hurtle a few things during the process.
I'm pretty sure that Guest meant Hurdle - An obstacle or difficulty to be overcome. Hey. Nobody loves a challenge more than me. I just prefer them when the deck isn't stacked against you from the git go. This experience was like a combination of the 200M hurdle and the pole vault.
Having a well constructed plan the migration helps relieve possible headaches. In the end, there are hundreds of satisfied users of Navision.
I'm sure there are. I'm not talking about users. I'm talking about me. And lest you forget. It's all about me and my needs. :)
We have a new Navision partner now. Tectura. They ROCK. Sherry, Jeff, and Flemming. Awesome. I have A New Hope.
