Ft Lauderdale Online – 1st Meeting

We had the first online version of the Ft Lauderdale developer group meeting tonight. Eighteen people were online but i was the only one with a web camera… I hope more start getting the video cranked up! The topic was Introduction to MVC and was suppose to be given by Jim Zimmerman out of Tampa but he called at 5:30 (for the 6:30 meeting) reporting that his laptop power brick was toast and he was out of juice. He had tried to get another one but at this point he was dead in the water because his ......

Bhamas Dot Net Meeting

I was honored to be able to attend the first meeting of the Bahams .net (www.bahanet.org) user group in Nassau last week. Kyle Baly (http://codebetter.com/blog... organized the meeting held at a local comany IPBS. Fairly small group but that is ok! None of them knew what to expect and surprisingly none of them were there due to a direct contact with Kyle but because someone told them about it. After getting them warmed up to what was possible in learning, business networking and socializing, ......

South Florida Enterprise and Strategy Architects Special Interest Group

The other “fall out” of the South Florida Code Camp 2006 was the formation of the “South Florida Enterprise and Strategy Architects Special Interest Group“. Who said Pub Clubs were only for fun? This new group, headed by Quent Herschelman of Microsoft, will focus on entrprise architecture and development, not necessairly limited to Microsoft technologies. Non Profit Ways

http://www.nonprofitways.com/ has been in existance for over three years, originally started at a post user group meeting at Hooters! Recently, an original project, the South Florida Table Tennis Organization site was officially completed. The purpose was to be able to get local (and now world wide) .net developers to work on projects that would benifit non profit groups that could not afford to undertake a custom development effort. A new project, Grove House Artists has been started by David Silverlight. ......

WOW!! That was fun! The room was packed with 50 people and their machines loading Visual Studio 2008 while Joe Healy (www.devfish.net) talked about various Visual Studio Features. People started arriving at 5PM with Ed Hil from DeVry checking identiies and dna samples. Up to 6:30 PM only the 1st 50 on the list who showed up with a machine got a copy. During this time we kept a list of people as they arrived and the order they arrived in. At 6:30 we opened it up and had just enough copies for everyone! ......

Running Code Camps

2007-11-17 - Added organization, Lorins unconference website software and a few other update A week or two ago a few guys wanting to get some ideas about running code camps. It has taken on a life of it's own but here are some notes I made based on running code camps in South Florida. I'll edit and add to this as the discussion progresses. Organization Very important not to try and do it all yourself, get others involved. Planning is key Start at least a few months out, lining up venue, sponsors ......

Two New South Florida Speakers - May 2007

This month we had two new speakers in South Florida! On May 1st at Citrix in Ft Lauderdale, Vishal Shukla presented an Ajax based web application he and his two co-workers wrote for the Palm Beach emergency operations. West Palm Beach User Group Meeting - 4/19/2007 - Standing room only!

It was a great meeting at West Palm Beach, hosted again by Frank Bocchino and Joe Kelley at OpenClose.com. We had standing room only as Joe Healy, our Microsoft Developer Evanegelist out of Tampa gave me a hard time about a slight miss spelling of Orcus ... I mean Orcas. It was perfect timing because earlier that day the Orcas Beta 1 had been posted on MSDN. Joe gave an excellent run down on the new developer related features. Class extensions, LINQ and many others. Actual release date is unknown ......

Boom at Pier 66

The MSDN event at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 yesterday ended with a big bang! As Russ Fustino and Shervin Shakibi were doing the 2nd of 3 presentations in front of 300(?) people, a large bang shook the walls and shocked the crowd. It sounded like a large garbage dumpster being dropped 10 stories to a concrete pad. It was unclear if it was a mechanical shock or explosion or if we should all be running for our lives. Amazingly, nobody paniced and except for a few all stayed in their seats while Russ ......

South Florida Code Camp 2007 - Pictures and Review!

I capped the registration at 650 but we still got 500 attendees (better than normal conversion rate..) The 120 pizza's went fast... we could have used a few more... On the other hand there was only $27.69 left after everything was paid so it all worked out ok! We also drank over 700 bottles of water and cans of soda plus many dozens of donuts, muffins and bagels. Not to mention gallons of coffee. Even with all this food, the small cafe in the Devry cafeteria did a booming cash business. Thanks to ......

South Florida Architecture SIG "Group Share" a success....

Originally conceived by Ken Hodges-Hammer (www.sipantic.com) and flushed out during lunch with Dave Noderer at Bru's Room in Deerfield Beach, FL. We scheduled the first pass last night at the Microsoft office in Ft Lauderdale. This would not have happened without active participation, planning and pizza from Jeff Barnes our Microsoft Architecture Evangelist. The basic concept is to move beyond plain old presentations to get the user group attendees actively involved and participating. We know that ......

Russ Fustino and XNA Game Studio...

On Tuesday December 12th, Russ, our Microsoft Developer Community Champion introduced us to the XNA game studio.

I'm not much of a gamer but this looks like a lot of fun and with should spur a rapid increase in the number of game developers.

Thanks to Russ as well because he had actually started his vacation but took the time to present at our meeting in Mirmar before heading to the keys!!

South Florida Code Camp 2007 Open for business! -- UPDATE

New date is February 10th, 2007, a week later than originally planned. As we started making arrangments we found that NO hotel rooms were availble in either Broward or Miami/Dade counties due to the superbowl. So we move the event from the 3rd to the 10th. For most people this has worked out better. The website is up and runing thanks to Joe Healy and Mihir Patel. Miguel Castro at FlaDotnet.com in Miramar,FL

Thanks to Miguel Castro and INETA for a great user group meeting last Tuesday (2006-10-10). Miguel gave his classic custom control presentation which opened my eyes to a few things. While I do lots of user controls, I've never bothered to make them into separate custom controls but will give it a shot! One unusual thing about the meeting is that we spontaneaously had a fairly lengthy Q&A session before the meeting started. Miguel arrived and got setup an hour before the meeting started and as ......

Scott Cate does MVP at FlaDotNet in Miramar, FL

No... not Most Valuable Professional but “Model View Presenter”. Last night Scott gave what I think was the best technical presentation we ever had. He built a multi-tiered application in a couple of hours including projects and database. He did not even paste code snippets. More importantly he was able to bring the entire 60+, standing room only crowd along explaining a number of complex concepts along the way. He took the mystery out of “interfaces“ using easy to understand ......

South Florida Code Camp 2006

As usual his camera was busy and he has posted pictures on his website at http://www.russtoolshed.net/. Indigo Road Show in Ft Lauderdale Report

Unfortunately I was tied up with family committments and could not actually attend but Joe Healy wrote up a nice article with pictures!

Indigo Road Show in South Florida

We scored anIndigo Roadshow in South Florida, yea! And another in Tampa the week after. So... what is Indigo? Will learn a lot more next week but my take is a big step for Microsoft that represents a maturing of the technology to write distributed applications. You will be able to write distributed applications where pieces talk to each other without knowing much detail of the underlying channel. Details of the channels may change over time or depending on the need or availability. Write once.. communicate ......
