//Build/ - Day 0

Tuesday, September 13, 2011 3:11 AM

Today was Day 0 of the Microsoft Build conference here in Anaheim - a day for attendees to travel, get their registration done early, and set up their session schedule for the remainder of the week.

But this conference is quite different. Microsoft is holding its cards very tightly around Windows 8, and no information will really be available until after the initial keynote tomorrow. Normally when you register for a conference you already have access to the sessions - not so here. In fact the Build registration pack was very light, consisting of a booklet, a namebadge with lanyard, and a wristband for the attendee party. That's it - no pen, no water bottle, nada.

Keep in mind that the rumour is that Microsoft will give each attendee a Windows 8 powered tablet, so cutting costs on trinkets (that end up being added to a conference swag collection pile at home) is acceptable.

Still, we don't *really* know anything about the conference or what we're going to be shown! Will there be development sessions talking about HTML 5 and Jquery? Will we see beyond the consumer versions to what the server versions will look like? And what about backwards support for older applications currently running on Windows 7?

Lots of questions, not many answers, but the biggest risk that Microsoft is taking in this Build conference is that they might come up short on the expectations they've set with the attendees.

Tomorrow will reveal all.

How can they come up short on the expectations that they've set? They've set absolutely no expectations. Any that were set have been done by the attendees via rumours. 9/13/2011 6:08 AM | Donald

Oh c'mon now, they've set lots of expectations with this OS being a true tablet/touch based UI. We know at a high level what the developer story looks like too. So now its a matter of getting into the details.

Also, you should be here. :)
