WP7 – January Update to be “Massive”

Good news emerging from the tech rumour mill! It seems that the next big WP7 OS update will be coming sooner than later – read: January. It’s also going to be “massive”, and speculation is that it will include copy/paste, custom ringtones, and multi-tasking support, among other things. Twitter comments from those that have seen it (or have some inside info on it…not really sure who Chris Walshie is, but anyway…) have included MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years. Let’s just say, they ......

WP7 – Do’s and Don’ts for Charging the Samsung Focus

Discovered this over the last few days, and its worth noting. I was trying to charge my phone at work via the USB cable connected to my laptop, and the battery was charging at a snail’s pace. After a few hours, I never did get past the half-way battery mark (and it was pretty close to that before I started charging). Came home, used the wall plug and voila – phone charged up in no time. So just an FYI – USB charging is brutally slow. Maybe this isn’t news to anyone else…come to think of it, my BlackBerry ......

A Yank’s Guide to the Grey Cup

Today is a big day in Canada – Grey Cup Sunday! It’s the day our Canadian Football League (CFL) hosts its championship game, and its a country-wide celebration! Being Canadian though, we’re generous and gracious in offering our championship game to people of other nations, and since the US has a league that plays a similar game to its Canadian counterpart, I figured I’d put a little guide together. The Teams This year is a rematch of last year’s Grey Cup: The Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. the Montreal ......

WP7 – About that “Turn Phone Into Mass Storage Device” Hack…

I blogged a while back about a WP7 hack that was making the rounds showing how to turn your phone into a mass-storage device (so like a USB drive basically). I got around to try it today, and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. Below are the directions (you can find these on a number of sites, the version below is from BigTech.com): Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\C... ......

WP7–Unlocked Samsung Focus + Rogers = Not Too Bad

I finally got around tonight to getting my sim card from Rogers (Canadian 3G cellular telco)*. I bought my Focus unlocked from Expansys, so I get to avoid the annoyance that is cellular contracts. So here are some things you need to know about setting up your unlocked phone with a different provider, specifically (obviously) Rogers: You will require to hard-reset your phone. After putting in the SIM card, I looked *everywhere* for a setting that would let my device see my SIM card. No dice, displayed ......

WP7– Odd App Install Behaviour

[UPDATE Nov 25/2010] So last night I plugged my phone into my pc to charge, which brought up the Zune software. I wanted a few more apps, so I downloaded them from there. Phone synched, and I went to try my apps. I thought “What the hell”, and tried to access an app on the marketplace. This time I didn’t get the “This item is not available from the Marketplace catalogue”, I got some message about an error and a hex value. I tried to access an app again to see if I’d still get the error message and…*POOF*…I ......

WP7–Getting the MAC Address for a Samsung Focus

Now I know what you’re thinking: D’Arcy, really? Do you really need to devote a blog post to telling us which menu item to select from an options screen to get the MAC address of a Samsung Focus? OH IF IT WERE SO EASY!!! I wanted to connect my brand-spankin’ new Samsung Focus to my home network, thinking exactly what I typed above: find the settings area, look up the MAC address, and bliss. But I couldn’t find it. Odd…off to the internet, where I found my answer at MobilityMinded.com and THANK GOD ......

WP7 – Creating Application and Marketplace Icons

I am not a designer. I like to think I have artistic ability, but let’s face it – my DLE Flash Card WP7 app’s icons are pretty lacking in a certain je-nais-se-quoi. Luckily Rick Engle wrote a great article over on the Expression website that walks us through the requirements for the icons as well as how to make them look pretty. Worthwhile read, check it out! http://expression.microsoft... D ......

WP7 – Registry Hack Turns Device Into USB Drive

Want to drag and drop files from your computer directly to your Windows Phone 7 device? The folks at WPCentral have posted an article showing how to do it! Just remember you have to do the hack on every computer you want to transfer files from.

WP7 Samsung Focus Has Hidden USB Tethering!

My buddy Shane Sholdice tweeted an Engadget article revealing that the new Samsung Focus WP7 device does support USB tethering, a feature that was reported missing from the WP7 devices. The article references an article on MobilityDigest.com that takes you through step by step how to enable this. However, a word of warning: these instructions seem to *only* work with phones hooked up to the AT&T network. The author was given the username and password for AT&T tethering, which suggests that ......

Amazon Selling WP7 Handsets for a PENNY?!

According to Engadget they are! The HTC Surround and the LG Quantum are available for a penny when you sign up for a new AT&T 2 year contract! I went on to Amazon’s site and can confirm that the pricing is indeed in effect: So if you’re thinking about getting one, Amazon might be the way to go ......

WP7 and Micro SD Cards – What You Need To Know

This FAQ article came across my Twitter stream this afternoon. It’s related to the Samsung Focus, but this line suggests its a broad design feature of WP7 devices: Windows Phone 7 does not support freely swapping microSD Card in and out. ORLY!? Not only that but… Many commercially available retail microSD cards are not approved for use in Windows Phone 7. Use of unapproved cards may cause performance degradation or device instability including unexpected reset and loss of user data. A microSD card ......

WP7–Thoughts on Canadian Carrier Landscape

I had a whole blog post written up on the evils of Telus and how the “largest 3G network in Canada” doesn’t even run through two of the central provinces – Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Then I found out that they actually are 3G in SK and have the Windows Phone 7 devices listed as “coming soon”, so it would seem that Manitoba is the only province left out. Fine. Whatever. But that still leaves us with an interesting landscape here in Canada. We have three carriers committed to WP7 devices at launch: ......

Adventures in WP7 - “Submission In Progress” Doesn’t Mean What You Think

*Note: This post was supposed to go up a few days ago, but I had internet issues. So after my DLE Flash Cards app was rejected I fixed up my app and then re-uploaded it. I went to the corresponding step in the submission process and uploaded my new xap. My status changed to “Submission in Progress”, and I waited. And waited. And waited. A week went by, and nothing. This seemed really odd. I mean, were they really that backed up in testing submitted apps?! But then my MVP lead, Simran, sent out an ......
