Developers Have a New Threat – The Offended Designer

For most developers going to the DBA for any sort of request was usually a mixture of concern, apprehension, strife, and anger…because while you just wanted to cold-cock the snarky bugger, you knew that you’d have to play nice if you had any chance of seeing your stored proc change getting put in place before the next release. Now it appears that developers need to look both ways before crossing the street, and the threat comes from the one group you’d think would be shy and timid: the designers! ......

Why Won’t My Silverlight Rectangle’s Mouse Enter Fire?

I wanted to create an area in a Silverlight app that would react to the MouseEnter event. My first attempt looked something like this: Don’t freak out about how I got the brushes window there…this is a paint.net smoke & mirrors image. I wanted to show what my settings were on my rectangle though. I figured that, since I didn’t want the rectangle to actually be visible, that I could just leave the fill and stroke values to be ‘No brush’. But when I ran my app I noticed that my MouseEnter events ......

Silverlight/Flash Smackdown a Great Success!

The Winnipeg .NET UG, Flash in the Peg, and New Media Manitoba did a fantastic job last night running the Silverlight/Flash Smackdown event last night! We had close to 160 people show up, the biggest pizza order in our user group’s history, and gave away over $12,000 in prizes! I took a few pics posted below (sorry, camera phone), and I’ll update this post once we know what the verdict was: did Silverlight get the Bundy Splash or did Flash succumb to the People’s Elbow ......

VS.NET 2010 – Possible Bug Referencing ASMX Service From Silverlight 2

Decided to use VS.NET 2010 for a really small Silverlight project, and LOVING the designer UI! It’s awesome to have designer functionality within Visual Studio. Blend isn’t going away (the styling features are still baked into Blend, not VS.NET), but at least this gives developers the ability to do layout changes within VS.NET before handing it off to the artists. So back to the title of this post. I whipped up a quick ASMX web service to collect some simple data. I posted it up to my server and ......

Tech Ed Thoughts – Microsoft <3’s India

As I watched the keynote on Day 1 of TechEd, something occurred to me: No Steve Ballmer. No Steve Ballmer? In the middle of North America’s (and really the worlds) economic situation, why wouldn’t Steve Ballmer be present to address the throngs that gathered at the biggest Microsoft learning event of the year? The answer is that he did attend Tech Ed and did deliver the keynote…it was just at Tech Ed India. It seems odd that Microsoft would have scheduled both events at the same time, but that sentiment ......

Star Trek Review (or, The Trouble With Time Travel)

Non-Spoiler Review I went in with 0 expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The movie is a great base for future Star Trek movies and reboots the series in a way that purists and new fans can appreciate (I think anyway…I’m not Trekkie ;) ). Definitely worth a watch. 3.5 out of 5 Scroll down for the spoiler review. Spoiler Review The movie was good, don’t get me wrong. But it was plagued with the same thing as Wolverine: a less-than climactic final battle scene that seemed to end all too quickly. ......

SharePoint and Silverlight – Displaying Silverlight in a Page

I had the pleasure today of trying to get Silverlight and SharePoint to play nice with each other. You’d *think* this wouldn’t be that difficult. But as I’m learning more about SharePoint, I’m realizing also that things are sometimes more complex than we assume. Prelude: Clarification on Form Content Web Part So in a previous post, I talked about my frustration with how code in a Form Content web part wasn’t behaving the way I expected. Instead of showing the Silverlight app it was always showing ......

Canadian Geek Boutique Now Online…Although Who Runs It Is In Question

Oh sure, Think Geek has been around for a while. But y’know, as kewl as Think Geek is, the whole US dollar and international shipping just never got me to make that jump to actually order anything. But thanks to a couple of Canadians out in Fredericton NB, Canada now has a home-grown option for getting its geeky stuff. The Geek Chic Boutique has been in business since December 2008, and has recently gotten its online store up and running. Their products cover the gambit: t-shirts, gadgets, electronics, ......

Wo?dPad Can Co?rupt Config F?les When Remo?ing

As I was working on my recent SharePoint issue (closer to a solution btw, stay tuned!), I had to make a few changes to the web.config file on the server. I remote in, I make some changes, I save, and *poof* – SharePoint is broken?! Odd…the error message is pointing to a typo in the web.config file. Turns out that TypeName was showing as Type?ame. Huh, weird…I didn’t change that area. Oh well. This little game of fix, save, find-new-questionmark went on for a while. I tried a couple of times to revert ......

Weird SharePoint/Silverlight Issue – Plugin Not Installed Template Firing

[Edit: Note that a solution to this was found, and you can read about it here.] Weird problem that I don’t have the answer to…yet. I have a Silverlight app (.xap) uploaded to a document library in my SharePoint site. I want to display this in a Form Content web part. In the source editor I have something akin to this (altered to keep it short and easy to read): <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"/> <asp:Silverlight ID="Xaml1" runat="server" Source="/Silverlight/Silver... ......

Protegra Featured in “High Tech Hub” Article

Protegra was featured in a Winnipeg Free Press article talking about the impressive technology firms that call Winnipeg home (view the article here). From the article: Among other things, Protegra designed and implemented an online campsite reservation system for Manitoba Parks in 2006, producing the work in record time and, according to Ibrahim, allowing the provincial Parks Department to increase its campsite reservations by 50 per cent. Protegra's ability to apply innovation to make its customers ......

Wolverine Review, or “Marvel, why do you let Hollywood do this crap?!”

Warning – This post gives away massive spoilers to the new Wolverine movie. If you don’t want to ruin the movie for yourself, stop reading this now. I have a love/hate relationship with Marvel comic based movies. Spiderman 1, loved it, Spiderman 2, was ok. Spiderman 3, well I think we know how I felt about that one. XMen started good in the series, ended a little weak. Hulk and Iron Man I was never really into, so I had no major expectations. And then comes Wolverine. Let’s start with the good. The ......
