Telus Going 3G/4G

Friday, February 20, 2009 8:53 AM
Over lunch yesterday a colleague mentioned that Telus was setting up a 3G network, just in time for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. In addition to the obvious benefit for Telus (why let Rogers get all the roaming fees for those international attendees using 3G phones), this is a HUGE win for consumers who now have another 3G network in Canada to compete with Rogers.

I've been a long time Telus customer, and the only real gripe I have is that I can't have the freedom two switch phones like Rogers does. It looks like soon I'll have nothing to complain about.

I think there is some confusion about when all this will go into effect though. From the Telus website, they mention the new network being built starting this summer and that it will be 4G not 3G. However today walking through Winnipeg Square, the camera place that also sells Telus phones had 3G advertising out (!?).

Regardless of what the current state is, at least we know that there will be changes coming in the Canadian cell phone space in the years to come.
