PDC 08 – Almost Missed My Plane

After the PDC closed at 3PM, a group of us went over to the Liberty Grille again for a bite to eat. We’d been there the night before and had a really good experience, so thought we’d try it again. Everything was going fine until 5:00 came around and I had to leave. First, our waiter was nowhere to be found and I asked another waiter to get him for us and if he could bring my bill that would be great. Our waiter shows up with the bill for the entire table. I explain that I only am paying for my portion. ......

Reflections on PDC 08 - The Message

PDC has come to an end and I’m sitting here reflecting on what I've experienced over the last few days. The PDC experience has been quite different than the Tech Ed or Dev Teach events I've attended in the past. There's a different vibe to PDC, and a different message that Microsoft is trying to get across. Where Tech Ed is all about teaching, PDC is all about telling. At PDC, Microsoft is describing the direction they're heading in for the next few years. They're giving us a glimpse into where they're ......

PDC 08 – Devs After Dark Party

So last night we hit up the Devs After Dark party held by the Microsoft partners team. It was a very LA type party: - Awesome venue, including a huge outdoor patio area. - Awesome food and an open bar(s…there were like 4 or 5 of them) - Rock Band 2 displaying on a huge brick wall - Classic video games, pool table, and 360’s all over the place - And…Laker Girls (you could get your picture taken with them for free) No pictures unfortunately, since I didn’t bring my camera, but a good time was had by ......

PDC 08 - Swag Bag Contents

This video was taken back on Sunday...just getting around to posting it now. It shows what we got as part of our swag package here at PDC, as demonstrated by Jeff Julian. Video: PDC Swag Bag ......

PDC 08 – After Universal, its Howl At The Moon!

Howl At The Moon was one of the best things about Tech Ed Orlando, and finding out there’s one here in LA was just golden! We had a great time hanging out and listening to the singers, although tomorrow night they have an Alice Cooper tribute band coming in…must check that out! Here are a few shots. The next great Luchidore Tag Team! Alexei, you horny devil! Chris Williams, looking svelte! Chris Smith just got his scalp massaged by Justin Campbell…Keith Elder is disturbed by what he’s just seen but ......

PDC 08 – Universal Attendee Party

I have to tell you that this was the *best* Universal attendee party EV-AR! I’m sure many wouldn’t agree, but that depends on what your feeling is towards horror movies. Universal Studios, in preparation for Halloween, has transformed the theme park into a horror-themed exhibition, and it didn’t disappoint! Upon entering the park, we were greeted with some walking skeletons and an addition to their entry statues…one that moved…and had claws on one hand… Passing the front statues, we were then accosted ......

PDC 08 – Like anyone goes to keynotes in person anymore…

So my PDC report for today (never did run into Eric Cote to do our report tonight)… Today was a day of big announcements…but I didn’t see any of them. Mainly because I spent my day hanging with my tribe. Partially because I can view the keynotes at any time (I would be viewing it right now, but my hotel Internet is being stupid, so it’ll have to wait). I can tell you that the tribe was in its full social mode and we had a great time. I caught up with Joey deVilla, the new DE in Canada, and also connected ......

PDC 08 – Expo Party

Here are some videos from the Expo party last night. Food and Mini Me ......

PDC 08 – The Canadian Report!

Finally got my videos converted over! Here is the first Canadian Report with myself and Eric Cote! And its bilingual! Video: Canadian PDC Report ......

PDC 08 – Who’s That Girl?

My buddy Shane posted a comment on my previous blog post, asking… Forget about the bags. Your readers want to know who is the total fox in the background?! -=Shaneo=- Well Shane, here’s your answer… ......

Movie Maker is Pissing Me Off

I love Windows Server 2008 as my desktop…LOVE IT! Sure, there have been a few hoops to jump through, but for the most part its been fine. Until now. Now I have videos that I need to upload to the web, to edit, to make *magic* from. But Movie Maker and Server 2008 are not friends. In fact, I had to get an installed copy of it to get it to even run (because it won’t install from an MSI on server OS’s). I’ve got the codecs installed, everything is great…except that I can’t import ANY media into Movie ......

PDC 08 – Expo Party

So last night was the conference Expo Party. Every Microsoft conference I’ve been to has held this event at some point. It’s basically party appetizer food and desserts along with beer and wine, and its held in the Expo area. This is where the Expo people get to show off their big event presentations (Mini Me…Vern whatever his name is…was here for example), and its a great networking time as well. I’ve got some video footage to post in a bit as well. D ......

ArcLight Cinemas FTW!

So last night I went out with Ambrose and Steve to see Max Payne. I want in to the movie with no expectations…and STILL left disappointed! I don’t want to give away the plot, but let’s just say that this movie is NOT Constantine 2. The highlight for me was actually the weird casting choices: that girl from That 70’s Show and Family Guy, Nelly Furtado, Chris O’Donnel, Beau Briges, that guy from Grounded for Life…it was just a weird mix of people. Anyway, the highlight of the experience wasn’t the ......

PDC 08 – Open Spaces with Steven Sinofsky

If you’re at PDC 08, there’s a great opportunity to discuss Windows 7 and give feedback. Steven Sinofsky, the Senior VP of Windows, will be available for a 30 minute open spaces session this afternoon (Tuesday) at 12:45.

I’m guessing the more people hear about this, the bigger the crowd, so get there early to get a good seat.

PDC 08 - *The* Best MVC Presentation *EV-AR*

I checked out Phil Haack’s MVC presentation this afternoon, and I’ve gotta say that Phil did a phenomenal job communicating the story behind the product. From establishing why the framework was created, how it fits in the ASP.NET strategy going forward, and explaining the how’s and why’s to an audience that more than likely was comprised of webform devs. Phil did a great example app as well, mimicking stackoverflow.com and providing a great real world example. However, as a great follow up, Jeff ......

PDC 08 – ASP.NET Roadmap

Went to the ASP.NET Roadmap session…nothing really earth shattering, but some good improvements coming with ASP.NET 4.0. They’re focusing on four themes for the next version: - Best platform for standards (HTML, CSS, Ajax) - Great Line of Business Platform - Support Pattern Based Dev (MVC) - Re-Invest in the Core So knowing that, what are some things we can expect? Here are some highlights: Client ID’s will now be manageable by developers (you give a custom prefix, but an appendix will still be applied ......

Microsoft releases Intellisense for JQuery…ON JQuery

The intellisense files for JQuery in VS.NET 2008 have been released…and interestingly, they’re not available on Microsoft’s site…but on JQuery’s!

You can get them at:

PDC 08 – Monday Morning Keynote

So I was late to the keynote this morning. No biggie…it doesn’t look like I missed too much in the first half hour. The message from what I did see is pretty clear though: Microsoft is jumping into cloud computing in a big way. So what is cloud computing anyway? From what I can tell so far, its basically the next evolution in internet based services. It’s an infrastructure that allows for anywhere-computing, and for securely connecting internal and cloud based computers to perform tasks. To go along ......

PDC 08 – PDC Gang Signs

Since we’re here in LA, its only fitting that we have PDC gang signs to flash around the conference. And thanks to our new Developer Advisor, Joey deVilla, we’re ready to start a whole new era of the VB/C# battles.

PDC 08 – Achievement Cards

So while I wait for my roomie to finish getting ready, figured I’d mention a kewl little side game at this year’s PDC. Various product groups, events, areas, and individuals are giving away Achievement Cards. The size of a business card, these just for showing off to everyone else how active you were at PDC (I guess?). AFAIK, there’s no prizes or anything for collecting them…its all more just for fun than anything, but it does add another aspect to the conference. D ......

The Oh So Stylish PDC Bag

So this year Microsoft decided to go green with their conference bag offering. In conferences past its been all about the laptop bag or backpack…but this year, the bag is more like the reusable ones you get at your local grocery store. Ooooo…so prada…so stylish… Don’t mess with the Zochris! Video of the contents to come…off to a few parties tonight. Pics! D ......

The Sunday Night Before PDC Adventure

And so begins our tale of the night before PDC. It starts with .Chris and I hitting the hotel and changing into something more presentable for the evening offerings. Then it was off to have dinner with the O’Reilley folks (Thanks again for dinner Laurel!). Good times, good discussion… We then started the marathon walk to Casey’s for Party With Palermo. But when we got there, we noticed an interesting site… That’s right…those are people all lined up around the railing, looking down into Casey’s. The ......

PDC – Open Spaces Area

One event at PDC that you shouldn’t miss is the open spaces area, which has an amazing set up for this years event. Lots of whiteboard, space for accommodating any size of group, and of course Jason Olson! Here are some pics of the area… ......

PDC 08 – Sunday in LA, Setting Up GWB Booth

LA Conference Center…AFTER the mad Registration rush ;) The conference officially starts tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean there’s no buzz at the LA conference center! The registration lines were busy as people registered and moved to the pre-conference sessions being held today. Over in the expo area though, it’s all about set up. All over booths are going up, carpet tiles with sponsors are being installed, internet connections are being hooked up, and badge issues are being resolved (Thanks again ......

SoCal Code Camp Dinner

So after the first day of the So Cal Code Camp, we were treated to something very kewl: an outside, catered dinner for the attendees…complete with Rock Band 2! I think this was a great idea for ending the code camp, and its something that I’ll be looking to try and make happen for our Winnipeg Code Camp this February (it’ll have to be inside of course…outside in –40 C wouldn’t draw much of a crowd ;) ). I gotta tell you though, and it may be just a honeymoon phase, but I’m *loving* California. The ......

I’ve seen that logo before somewhere…

…I’m just sayin… D ......

SoCal Code Camp: Agile Panel Session

In an agile panel discussion with Phil Scott, Denise Phillips, Paul Hodgetts, Ken Kolchier, and Scott Dunn. Great discussion and great questions…its a Q&A session with the audience, and the questions tend to be probing what Agile is, how it works, how to get started with it, what the benefits are, etc. I asked the panel to provide their “cookbook” of processes they employ in their agile projects, and they came back with an interesting concept that I never really thought of: Scrum is the starting ......

I Love This Country: Vendor Machines in the USA

I love this country: I can pay with my credit card for a bottle of pop from a vending machine ......

Rob Zelt, You Have FAILED Canada!

I ran into Rob Zelt today at the SoCal Code Camp today. He was wearing THIS: That’s right…a long sleeved sweater. In California. SOUTHERN California. “Gee Rob, aren’t you hot?” “No”, he replied, “it’s actually kind of cold.” Canada demands your citizenship card back Rob. ;) D ......

Made It To LA – SoCal Code Camp

I flew out at 6:15 this morning, stopped at Denver, and made it to LA around 9:45ish. After getting my luggage and picking up my rental, I had my *first* LA adventure: trying to find the univserity that the SoCal Code Camp is being held at. Freeways were no issues, but getting to the university and *into* the campus was a bit of a challenge. Then there was finding parking, and finally finding the buildings that the talks were going down at…and now, here I am in Amanda’s F# talk (packed room too). ......

Sorry, But Weird Al Has Not Joined MSDN Canada DPE (But Joey deVilla has!)

OH THE DISSAPOINTMENT!!! I read with much enthusiasm that MSDN Canada was replacing Jean-Luc David (who’s moving on to a role at Redmond…GL JL!) with ‘The Accordion Guy’! Now, I know like you whenever I hear the words ‘Accordion Guy’, you think of one thing: Weird Al Yankovic! But NO! Weird Al has *NOT* joined MSDN DPE here in Canada. So then I thought, well maybe its the other Yankovic…and with his Yanks no less… But NO! So it turns out that ‘The Accordion Guy’ is actually Joey deVilla! Now some ......

Can BizTalk Developers Have Fun At PDC?

Ok, so I get it that there's an SOA and BizTalk conference happening in January in Seattle...and there's a roadshow that's ongoing this fall/winter to bring a smaller version of the Seattle conference to various cities. But does that mean that no BizTalk sessions could be added to PDC?! BizTalk 2009 is one of the most significant jumps in the platform, allowing for Visual Studio 2008 integration among other things. And yet when you look at the topic cloud... So what does that mean if you're an SOA ......

Why Tobin Titus Weight Loss > Justice Gray's

There's been some trash talking going around Twitter and the blogosphere. It started when Justice Gray was deeply wounded that his 8th Most Stalked Twitter Friend, Theo Moore, declared that no one had inspired him more in his fitness goals than Tobin Titus. This infuriated Justice to the point where he made a commitment to be down to a 32" waist by Dev Teach Vancouver this June. I was talking with a friend of mine who's currently in his 30's for waist size. He was saying how he could easily get down ......

Jeremy Miller and ASP.NET MVC “Thunderdome”

Just like Tina belted out on the theme song for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Jeremy Miller has stood on the top of the Code Better mountain and belted out “We don’t need another out of the box web solution!” Actually, his recent post outlines the opinions that he and Chad Myers have formed while working with the ASP.NET MVC framework. In the post, Jeremy gives some pretty honest thoughts on the failings of the framework as a whole as well as the positives and benefits of the individual components. ......

Kathleen Dollard Puts on a WF Clinic in Winnipeg

Kathleen Dollard is presently putting on a Work Flow clinic for a packed house at the Winnipeg .NET User Group. We’ve got well over 50 people out to see what Work Flow is all about and how/where/why we should use it. I’m finding that working with BizTalk gives me a great context to understand the idea of Work Flow in an application. Looking forward to beers afterwards and having more conversation. Saskatchewan, get ready for some great events! (Kathleen is hitting Regina and Saskatoon user groups ......

New WoW Patch – Some of the Goodies

So the other night I sat down to play some WoW (World of Warcraft), and was greeted with an update notification. That’s fine…it happens…but OMG: 1.2 Gig!? Turns out that in anticipation of the new expansion, the patch leading up to the expansion was released. I finally got around to playing tonight and here are some new features I discovered. Achievement Points So one new feature is the idea of achievement points, which you get for hitting certain milestones. These can be, like the screens below, ......

New Media Mantioba - You Had Me At iPhone

Twin Cities Code Camp Recap

I got back early this morning from a weekend away at the Minneapolis based Twin Cities Code Camp organized by Jason Bock of Magenic and featuring a slew of great presenters. I was down to do a “What is BizTalk” session while my buddy Juan Larios did a talk on Sharepoint. I like having alot of interaction in my sessions, including between attendees, and we definately had that. Some in attendance had experience with BizTalk and were able to give their real world experiences and answer questions that ......

Microsoft SOA and BPM Conference 2009?

Does anyone know where I can get more info on the Microsoft SOA and BPM conference scheduled for Jan 2009 in Redmond?

I know there are a few Canadian day-events, but I've also heard there's one in Redmond as well...

Career 2.0 Starts Monday, October 6th 2008

I made a comment about this in a prior post, but it was really long and wordy so unless you read right to the end you would have missed the announcement. So I figured I’d post a little ‘update’ to fill everyone in on what’s been going down. Over the last seven years I’ve worked for numerous small companies here in Winnipeg. I’ve been part of some interesting projects, had some successes, some failures, and a lot of lessons learned. I’ve tested the waters of independent consulting and had great success ......
