PCMag.Com – Apparently .NET is a Failure

So tell me what the following have in common: WebTV TabletPCs WinFS Passport .NET Windows Live Spaces SidewinderFreestylePro WinG Sidewalk OS/2 Give up? Well, according to Jeremy Kaplan and Sascha Segan of PC Magazine, these are all 10 Great Microsoft Technologies That Failed. There’s nothing really scientific about this list, especially considering that its a jumbled collection that spans 1980’s operating systems, a gaming controller, and a very well established development platform. In fact, I ......

Media Mall Technologies’ PlayOn Beta

Yag (Yair Alan Griver) put up some tweets* last night about about a new beta software offering called PlayOn from Media Mall Technologies, and it sounded interesting so I thought I’d check it out. Here’s the general idea: Media Mall acts as a video source for your PS3 or (in my case) XBox 360. It then allows you to browse various channel content, including ESPN, Hulu, and YouTube. More on the offerings later, but let’s talk about setting this up. I hit the download page and got the latest version. ......

Ignite Your Life: Relationships - Introduction

This post is part of a series called Ignite Your Life. For background info on the series, please refer to previous posts on introducing the series and The 5 R's. Whoever coined the phrase “Human Resources” should be shot. Ok, that’s a little extreme…but there is no worse term used in businesses today than “Human Resources”. In corporations, large and small, HR departments are in place to meet the needs of a workforce and help the business fill the need for a workforce. But to group employees under ......

100 Pushup Challenge

So after Chris prodded me and since I’ve been heckling Rob on Twitter, I figured I should finally throw my hat in the ring for this 100 Pushup Challenge that’s become all the rage on Twitter and in the blogosphere. In a nutshell: See how many pushups you can do before you fail. Compare that number with a chart to determine your starting level. Begin doing a 6 week program that aims to get you to 100 pushups within a month and a half. So tonight I hit the gym and tried for my max pushups. I hit 15, ......

WSE, SSL, or Both?

Ok, so here’s the situation: Application calls a web service over SSL. Here’s the question: Do you use WSE to perform authorization, or do you roll your own auth mechanism (i.e. send a GUID down and pass it back and forth with the server managing the GUID list?) I looked at the WSE samples from MSDN, and it just looked like way too much overhead for a message that is going to travel point to point and compared to how simple it would be to create, send, and manage a GUID list on the server for authentication…all ......

Ignite Your Life: Responsibility – Make Your Life Results Based

This post is part of a series called Ignite Your Life. For background info on the series, please refer to previous posts on introducing the series and The 5 R's (where you can find links to the other posts in this series). The New England Patriots have a dubious title associated with them: they're probably one of the only teams that will be remembered for LOSING the SuperBowl. With a perfect season on the line, they lost in dramatic fashion to the upstart NY Giants. The drama surrounding the team ......

Ignite Your Life: Responsibility - Choose a Life Less Ordinary

This post is part of a series called Ignite Your Life. For background info on the series, please refer to previous posts on introducing the series and The 5 R's (where you can find links to the other posts in this series). There is a huge difference between living and surviving. Many of us are in the latter group: we accept the things dealt to us in our lives and try to make the best of the situation we're given. All of us, especially in the comfortable developed world of 2008, have the option of ......

Dev Teach – Montreal Sessions Announced

DevTeach Montreal is happening this December, and the listing of sessions has just been announced on their web site. The speaker list and topics are all really impressive, and it looks to be another great conference put on by Jean-Rene and his team. I have three sessions that I’ll be doing: Comparing Silverlight to ASP.NET So you’re in the boardroom, and discussing your next internal web appliction, when your manager/CTO/CIO says “I’ve heard alot about Silverlight…its the newest rage…we should use ......

Worst Subway Experience Ev-AR!

Ok, normally I don't complain about negative service experiences. I spent 7 years in the restaurant industry, and I know that sometimes you have bad days. But this... So I walk down to my local Subway this morning to grab a quick breakfast sandwhich. There's one other guy in line ahead of me, and an elderly woman (late 50's, early 60's) is manning the counter. She has those glasses with the neck string so that she can always have them handy...she's friendly...not rude or snobby. But then she starts ......

Dear TSN: If you say you’ll stream a game live…

I’m sitting here right now away from a TV and radio…have a meeting with some geek friends…but I’d love to have the Bomber game on my computer. According to TSN’s website: Look! The game is available on TSN HD and STREAMED LIVE ON TSN.CA! The problem is that when you click that link, it takes you *back* to the CFL page on the TSN website with NO link whatsoever about where you can view the live streaming of the game. EPIC FAIL! I tried going to their “broadband” section but its all OLD videos. TSN…if ......

Some notes on Ignite Your Life series…

My buddy Donald Belcham made a suggestion that I post an entry with links to all the entries in the Ignite Your Life series. To that end, I’ve implementing a couple of things to make it easier to find the blog posts: First, I’m now updating the second post in the series which gave an overview of the 5 R’s with links to the posts. You can access (and bookmark) that page here. Secondly, on the left hand side of my blog you can find a list of links to the posts (they’re listed just under my XBox gamer ......

Ignite Your Life: Responsibility – CEO of You Inc.

This post is part of a series called Ignite Your Life. For background info on the series, please refer to previous posts on introducing the series and The 5 R's. I’ve worked at a number of different companies, in different industries, and have realized that most struggles that businesses face can be pinpointed to an uneven focus internally. Sales is always a top priority in any business, since that’s the food that feeds the organization’s hunger and nourishes the company. There’s always a danger ......

Ignite Your Life: Responsibility – Introduction

This post is part of a series called Ignite Your Life. For background info on the series, please refer to previous posts on introducing the series and The 5 R's. Now that we’ve moved through the Realization stage, we can move on to the next R in the five: Responsibility. I park at my parkade, and once again see the sign saying that the owners take no responsibility for any stolen or damaged property. I went to a gym a few years back that made me sign a waiver saying they weren’t responsible for any ......

Ignite Your Life: Realization – Discover Your Inner Power

This post is part of a series called Ignite Your Life. For background info on the series, please refer to previous posts on introducing the series and The 5 R's. In the last two installments of this series we looked at freeing ourselves from the Cult of Personality: freeing our importance, self worth, and self image from the grip of others. We also talked about using your illusion, and creating a self portrait of who you are and who you will become (lots of great discussion in the comments section, ......

Server 2008 – Kill Annoying Shutdown Tracker Dialog (Thanks Rick Strahl!)

So for actual servers there might be a reason to log why a shutdown is occurring…but for desktop implementations of Server 2008, it’s annoying as hell. I end up entering a space in the text field to enable the OK button. Wouldn’t it be nice if this annoying dialog just stopped showing up? Well thanks to Rick Strahl’s recent blog post, that annoying dialog will never see the light of day again. w00t. D ......

Windows Server 2008 Activation Issue – 0x8007232B

For the past few months, I’ve had a little bubble pop up from my taskbar saying “Hey, your copy of Windows can’t be activated!” and to each of these I would respond…well, I wouldn’t…I just ignored it. Figured it was an issue with the Microsoft activation servers and eventually activation would occur. Not so much. Instead, I was greeted this morning with a message that my copy of Windows was not authentic, and it would just sit with a black screen, a cursor, and the forementioned message in the bottom ......

Twin Cities Charity Fragathon

My buddy Chris Williams has organized a very kewl event: The Charity Fragathon in support of the Minnesota Children's Hospital.

Registration is only $10 and it looks to be a fantastic event. If you're going to be around the Twin Cities on September 24th, you should definitely check it out.
