Do Americans need to have a passport for flying into Canada as well? I knew we needed one to fly into the US...is it the same the other way around? (or to get back into the States I guess, eh?)

Ya know - the Winnipeg flight isn't that much more expensive than the trip I just took to Washington...but Chris Eargle has a good point, not sure if I could get a passport in time. I'll have to look into that....

They changed the rules back in January that Americans need a passport to get back into the US via plane. I think it will be required for land and sea travel starting in February.

My privacy concerned nature used to discount the idea of a national id card, but if it could wrap up all the documentation I need for operating motor vehicles and travel, I'd support it now. 12/18/2007 2:48 PM | Chris Eargle

One other option (just throwing this out there, and believe me: its not the *ideal* option) is to fly somewhere in the US that's *close* to Canada and drive up: Minneapolis or Grand Forks/Fargo (whichever of those two has an airport). Minnie is about 6 hours drive, GF/Fargo is maybe 1.5 to 2 hours?
