October is Lose Your Gut Month!

So you may remember that I was posting my workouts here on my GWB blog before moving it to the Mad Mexican Chicken Wing Workout blog, and for those that haven't been keeping up with my body sculpting regiment let me say that I am looking and feeling quite svelte. Oh yeah ladies, Big Pappa is in the hizz-ouse! Almost. You see, like many men out there, I'm struggling with one area that affects so many of our gender: the belly...the gut...the rotund stomach area. Now, mine is not AS rotund as it used ......

Justice Gray to Manitobans - You have NO style!

I was showing a friend Justice's MacBook Pro paint job when I was reminded that Justice fired an initial strike at the entire province of Manitoba: Manitobans everywhere are going to revolt against you just as soon as they're done picking through the bargain rack at Winners and purchasing blue jeans at the local Wal Mart. D ......

MS Team System Blog: May I Introduce Steve Porter

Some of you may or may not have heard of Steve Porter. Steve is becoming one of the foremost experts in VSTS here in Canada, and has already helped many organizations learn how to implement and utilize VSTS efficiently. In case some of you are VSTS junkies, I wanted to recommend his blog to be added to your RSS feeds. Now, don't let the URL scare you...yes, he's passionate about his new Macbook Pro but he's not one of "those" Mac-heads. http://homepage.mac.com/ste... D ......

Remember When Customer Service Meant Servicing Customers?

I've noticed a disturbing trend recently in all aspects of industries: restaurants, retail, and other service based industries: a lack of high customer service standards. My recent experience with Best Buy is a glaring example... It all started with a phone call yesterday morning. I was happily told that my 360 was DOA and that I would be receiving a new one. The guy on the phone said I needed to bring "all the cables" in since I'd be getting a new one. Being the pro-active person I am, I wanted ......

Hallalujah!!!

So after having others in the geek world (like here and here) seemingly throw my pain and sorrow in my face, God sent a messenger to me this morning. That Messenger was someone named Kyle...or Kent...regardless, he brought tidings of great joy to me: "Fear not D'Arcy, for on this day you will receive a new XBox 360 to replace the one you sent in for repair, and it will allow you to play Halo 3 tonight. Just bringeth all cables from the original unit into the local temple (read: Best Buy)." And with ......

Silverlight Is A Go...Take THAT AVG!

Thanks to Chris5287 for posting the response below which outlines one way to create a new Silverlight project while having the free version of AVG installed. "I had the same problem, if you dont want to unistall or shutdown AVG, even with the free version, you can stop the "Access Denied" problems by going into your Control Center on AVG, click on the properties of the Resident Sheild and in the Properties tab, deselect "Turn on AVG Residential Shield protection". If you want to stop AVG moaning ......

Russell Peters Rocks My World

There is a new face to Canadian comedy...Michael J. Fox, Alan Thicke, Bod and Doug McKenzie, Dan Akroyd, even what's-his-name who played the dad on American Pie...gone, done, has beens. The new face of Canadian Comedy is without a doubt Russell Peters. Although he lives in LA now and has been doing comedy for almost 20 years, this Toronto native has really hit his stride in recent years with famous bits such as "Somebody's gonna get a hurt", "Chinese guy gives a deal...34.50", and other bits strewn ......

Ultra Web Grid: Show Row_Edit_Template When Adding New Row

So you have an Infragistics Ultra Web Grid on your web page, and you're utilizing the Row Edit Template for editing the row. What you may be experiencing is that you can add a row, but then need to double click the row to bring up the edit template. Wouldn't it be nice if you could just see the template when you add the row. Of COURSE it would be nice! Here's what you do: function AddNewRow(gridId) { var grid=igtbl_getGridById(grid... igtbl_addNew(gridId,0); grid.beginEditTemplate(); } - Creates ......

Developer Night in Canada - Winnipeg, October 9th

John Bristowe from MSDN will be coming by on October 9th to deliver the next Developer Night in Canada event at our local .NET User Group. John's topic will be "Bringing the Power of the .NET Framework to Your Existing Applications", which will talk about integration and migration of existing VB 6.0 investments. From his abstract: "For the past few years, you’ve heard a lot about the .NET Framework and the development platform it provides to foster innovation. Meanwhile, you’re still managing applications ......

New Laptop Toy

So I bought...I mean, my company bought me, a new toy to use with my laptop today: a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 (possibly the longest mouse name ev-AR)! I'm doing a few code camp presentations coming up, and I've always wanted one of these, so this was a great opportunity to pick one up...well, that and Best Buy had it on for like $40 off. This mouse has a bunch of awesome features that ALL mice should have: An ON/OFF BUTTON!Seriously, this should be STANDARD for all mice here ......

An Open Letter to WestJet

Dear Westjet, PLEASE ADD MINNEAPOLIS TO YOUR FLIGHT DESTINATIONS! To drive from Winnipeg to Minneapolis, its 8 hours-ish (depending on the driver ;) ). To fly Air Canada from Winnipeg to Minneapolis its a little more than half that...but you have to go through Toronto (!?...did nobody tell Air Canada that Winnipeg is practically DIRECTLY NORTH* of Minneapolis?!) To fly NorthWest from Winnipeg to Minneapolis its about 1.5 hours each way...and you have to sell a kidney to cover the flight charge. Hear ......

Minneapolis Road Trip

I just got in this morning (as in 1:30 in the morning) from a whirlwind weekend roadtrip that saw us leave Winnipeg Saturday morning at 6 AM, drive to Minneapolis, watch the Vikings/Falcons game, and then drive back. Good times though...but too many good times to clog the main feed with my pics and commentary. So for those so inclined, here are links to blog posts that won't appear on the main GWB feed: Minneapolis Road Trip - Best Signs ev-AR! Falcons vs. Vikings - My Take On The Game Vikings Game ......

Falcons vs. Vikings: My Take On The Game

Oh Atlanta...there was so much promise just a few months ago, back when we thought that we'd have Michael Vick at the helm...back when we had a solid backup QB in Schaub...but that's all a fading memory...a dream, replaced with a startling nightmare. But...its not all bad news...in fact, if the team can learn from its mistakes in Minnesota, then all hope is not lost for the season. Joey Harrington is NOT Michael Vick But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Joey threw some nice passes, although most ......

Why Americans are WAY Friendlier than Manitobans

Now, I'm not going to lie to you: I think there are many out there that have this notion about Americans. That notion is that people from the US are: a) Arrogant b) Rude and Obnoxious c) Are Scary If you are one of the many who feel that way, let me point you in the direction of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I did not meet one American on this entire trip that fit into any of those descriptions (well, except for the guy at Cold Stone Creamery who obviously didn't want to be working that day). First there ......

Oh Happy Star, I Come for your Wiles...

Oh Hardee's, with your happy little star...how I wonder what you are...wait, I know what you are: a drug dealer to the morbidly obese, and your crack cocaine is spelt T-H-I-C-K B-U-R-G-E-R. So my buddies, who have made this trip before to watch a Vikings game, have created a tradition: hit the Hardee's in Fargo to down a Thick Burger (combo #8). A thick burger is a 2/3 lb double patty burger with bacon, cheese, and mayo. I, being the health-conscious man that I am, realized that this burger (although ......

Minneapolis Road Trip: Best Signs Ever

On any given road trip you always see some pictures that just make you laugh. On this one, we saw more than a couple. Here's a sample of names that we hope were selected because of the chuckle-invoking inuendo. Granny is just AMAZED at how HUGE it is...the Craft Direct thing I mean...right? Yes...this gas station in Minneapolis really is called the Pump n' Munch There's no inuendo here, and I'm sure many in the US are wondering why this pic is included...but to us in Canada (we don't have the same ......

Microsoft AJAX Update Panel - Great on Looks, Poor on Performance

There's a great MSDN article by Jeff Prosise that talks about the pros and cons of using the Microsoft AJAX update panel compared to other options (like web services and page methods). A quick excerpt: "For better or for worse, the UpdatePanel control is the darling of the ASP.NET AJAX community. I say "for better" because UpdatePanel makes partial-page rendering shockingly easy and "for worse" because its simplicity and ease-of-use come at the cost of efficiency and, ironically, bandwidth. While ......

Silverlight 1.1 Alpha, foiled by...AVG!

I downloaded the Silverlight 1.1 Alpha and giddily-like-a-schoolgirl launched my VS.NET 2008 Beta 2 environment, finding the Silverlight node and selected a Silverlight project template! Oh, the anticipation, the excitement, the...error messages? Hmm...turns out that VS.NET doesn't have access to a file...and AVG is warning me about something as well... The issue, as it turns out, has to do with the file being accessed: Testpage.html.js. It's the double extension that AVG doesn't like (which is a ......

What do you get when you remove the phone part of the iPhone? You get a touch-screen iPod!

Check out this article based on Apple's "The Beat Goes On" special event. First big deal: new iPod Nano: NICE! Although, to be honest, I don't really use mine for much video viewing...the screen is pretty small, and the nano screen is even smaller...but still...that device is just a nice package. But then... Then what? It's an iPhone. OH NO IT ISN'T! This is the new iPod Touch, which is basically the iPhone but without the phone component. AND it comes with wi-fi. That's right, an MP3 player that ......

Food Geeks are Hilarious..and Scary!

I went out and bought the mammoth sized Montreal Smoked Meat sub from Subway for lunch today (so...much...meat...but...h... which lead into a discussion about what Montreal Smoked Meat was, which lead to a Google search which led to this thread on Chowhound.com. These guys are passionate about pastrami and deli meats the same way Justice is about hair products and Donald! A quote from John Manzo on the thread: "I get smoked meat cravings now and again and we have GREAT shipped-from-Montreal ......

AJAX Update Panels - Like Transformers, More Than Meets The Eye

We ran into a snag with our current web app project. We have a page with an update panel, which has user controls within it that contain more update panels. We're trying to get the user-control update panels to fire without the main page going through its page_load event, but not having any luck. Interestingly, there's a way to enable partial post backs...but its a little decieving. By default, you can set an update panel to run in two update modes: Conditional or Always. Always is the default, and ......

Y'know how sometimes you date that girl that's all "Uh, you can't hang out with those loser friends anymore"? That's Vista and any IMG Mount app apparantly.

I downloaded Vista 2008 Beta 2 a while back in the .img version (you want me to download HOW MANY 700 MB files to run it as a VPC? what-EVAR). I then proceeded to try Daemon Tools, Clone Drive, etc. But none of them would install on my laptop, even though they said they supported Vista. Odd, I thought. Then I did a quick check and low-and-behold, my laptop came with the 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate, which many of those mounting apps won't support. Saddened, I figured I'd have to start downloading ......
