Well...if there was ever a game that young hockey players should watch to learn what NOT to do in a must-win game, game 5 of the Stanley Cup playoffs would be it. Ottawa made so many mistakes they looked like a group of
Tim-Bits hockey players.
I sat here with a buddy watching the game, gasping in utter astonishment and shouting "That did NOT just happen" when Ottawa scored on themselves. Yes, one of the two teams that should have been the pinnacle of the league scored on their own net. Are you kidding me?!
Then there was the giveaway that led up to the last Ducks goal, where a horrendous pass IN FRONT OF THE NET got away from Ottawa and onto the stick of the Ducks player.
Ottawa apparantly forgot too that you don't score goals when you just pass the puck...you have to actually SHOOT the puck at the net.
But whatever...as a Canadian, it does suck that Ottawa didn't win the cup. But as a Manitoban, there's more ties to the Ducks.
- Teemu Selanne had his record-setting rookie season and subsequent breakout seasons with the
Winnipeg Jets
- Randy Carlysle used to play for the Jets and for the past few years coached the
Manitoba Moose
- Penner, Skinner...both from Manitoba
And obviously they had the right team to take it. Ottawa didn't. Ce la vie.
Now...bring on the
CFL!
