Workout

Ugh...it was a tough one tonight... Bike 5 min warmup 10 1:1 (lvl 1 @ 140 RPM, lvl 20 @ 50 RPM...those were my goals anyway, and as long as I hit that for 75% of the minute I was happy) 10 min lvl 10 @ 100 RPM 5 min cooldown Weights 30 x side raises @ 30lbs/hand 30 x front raise @ 30lbs/hand 30 x shrugs @ 35lbs/hand 40 x leg press @ 230 lbs 30 x hamstrings @ 195 lbs 30 x row @ 50lbs/side 40 x this exercise where you sit with legs straight and straighten your feet which works the hamstring muscle ......

Fun with Sharepoint 2007 - Sharepoint != Source Safe

So a co-worker of mine was talking with me about a project I'm working on right now that involves Sharepoint 2007. He was going to do a code review and I mentioned that my web part is in my solution, but the web page that was required by the web part was in Sharepoint. He said "Well, its a good idea to keep all files in source control." POPPYCOCK I said...Sharepoint has a database, and besides: how annoying is it to maintain TWO different versions of the file: one that's accessed via the Sharepoint ......

Weekend Geekathon

So back in April I posted about how I'm becoming a better developer in 6 months. This weekend my wife is heading to North Dakota for the weekend with her sister, so I'm going to take advantage of having the house to myself to focus on knocking off some of my goals. Website My website will be live by the end of the weekend...and with content! No, I'm not moving my blog...its staying here at GWB. But I will have my site be a source for videos, podcasts, and articles...almost more like a repository ......

Fun with MOSS - PUBLISH THAT FILE!

Had a weird issue with an ASP.NET file that we had in our MOSS Pages directory. The page outputs an Excel file, but for some reason on mine it would render the output properly, but on everyone else's computer it would render some code-created output...that I had deleted from the page a long time ago! WTF?! But then I remembered...even though you make changes to a file, only you will see them until you PUBLISH that file. Once the file was published, the correct data was flowing out. So remember: changes ......

Roy Osherove Rocked Winnipeg .NET UG

Roy Osherove did the final UG event of his Canadian tour tonight in Winnipeg, speaking to a very attentive crowd about Agile development. Roy had been talking at Dev Teach in Montreal last week, and had presented at the Edmonton .NET User Group last night. We were very grateful that he was willing to do the tour, so a big thanks to Roy for taking the time to stick around in Canada for an extra week! This tour wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of MSDN Canada and Dev Teach, both ......

More Fun with Sharepoint 2007 and Web Parts

Hmmm...so I have a LinkButton that I'm adding to my web part. I've got code in my CreateChildControls method that has this line: lnkExportAll.Attributes.Add... "javascript:window.open('ht... When I run the code with this line, everything is fine. However, I have another method in the web part that will dynamically create a URL based on parameters passed in, so I try to do this: lnkExportAll.Attributes.Add... GetMyURL(true, false)); Don't worry about the true/false ......

Workout Regiment Post Offends - My Response

So I posted my workout regiment this morning on my blog. I'm normally pretty good with trying to keep it off the main feed and having it show up on my personal one, but this morning I was in a rush and just fired up Live Writer and posted. I get a comment from "IrritatedByYourPosts" about it saying "Do you not have anything more interesting to post?Like some latest design pattern youre using? Or some other geeky but informative post.I just find it irritating, all these posts talking about Vista and ......

Look up "Anti-Climactic" in the dictionary...you'll find "Heroes Finale"

*Spoiler Alert...if you haven't watched the finale yet, don't read any further.* Wow...thank God for PVR's is all I can say. I got home last night from dinner with a buddy and decided to watch the season finale of Heroes. I gotta say...the promise and anticipation that was there in the first half of the season just FIZZLED AND DIED with the finale last night. I was expecting an epic Matrix-like battle between Syler and Peter. Here are the two most powerful "heroes" on the show with matched power, ......

Friends Don't Let Friends Buy From Future Shop...

So my buddy bought a new laptop from Future Shop. He's not a power user with computers, so he was looking for some guidance from the sales staff. He wanted to get Office, but he wasn't sure which one he should get. The sales guy went to a service-tech and came back with this (tell me what's wrong with this statement): "Because you have a trial version of Office that comes with your laptop, you can just buy an upgrade version of Office and it'll work." I kid you not. Luckily he didn't open the package ......

Avoid RegisterFly!

I posted back on May 9th about an issue I was having with renewing an expired domain through RegisterFly. It's now been about a week and a half...and its STILL not renewed. I'm now told there's a "technical issue" that's preventing renewals to go through. A technical issue? And one that takes more than a few weeks to fix?! I've sent another support ticket asking for when the system will be ready to accept new renewals. I tried doing a transfer through Go Daddy, but apparantly expired domains need ......

Finally Saw Donnie Darko

After having many people look at me like I had bacteria eat my eyes after telling them I hadn't seen Donnie Darko, I finally picked it up from Best Buy (why rent for 5 $ when you can buy for $12?) and watched it yesterday. So many people told me that it was this freaky movie and that you'd have to watch it over and over to really "get it". I guess I must be geekier than most (or I've been de-sensitized to the mysteries of time travel because of watching Heroes this year), because it didn't really ......

Adventures in Sharepoint 2007 - The Fun Continues

So I ditched the whole aspx/dll option for a straight aspx page solution and got it working! (w00t!) So what I did was put an ASPX page into the Pages directory of the site. From here I can access it easily by browsing or passing the url in to whatever control I want opening up the page. A few things that came up: - This page needs to export to Excel and for whatever reason it wasn't doign it properly. I took out the actual control tags and replaced them with dynamically created controls in the code ......

More fun with Sharepoint 2007. This Episode: Sharepoint Designer - Adding ASPX File Over-writes Default.aspx?!

I'm trying to add an ASPX page to a Sharepoint 2007 site using Sharepoint Designer. When I do so, it defaults to adding it as "default.aspx" (I don't have a default.aspx page in my structure). But I obviously don't want it to be default.aspx...I want it to be Test.aspx. However...when I rename it, it says to me "do you really want to rename your default.aspx page to test.aspx?". Um...I didn't want this to BE my default .aspx in the first place...kinda silly...must be a "feature"...so I just click ......

Adding Code-Behind to Custom Pages in Sharepoint 2007

Will Allan posted on his blog about how to get an ASP.NET page with code behind installed in Sharepoint 2007. I really hope there's an alternative way to do this, because the way it is now is insane! You need to create your page and dll in vs.net 2005, then you need to create the page using Sharepoint Designer, then you copy the text from the ASP.NET page into the new Sharepoint Designer-created page, then you throw the DLL in the bin (or GAC)... I'm seeing the next big thing right now, and its Automation ......

I need a Sharepoint hero!

I'm banging my head against the wall on this one... I have a Sharepoint 2007 webpart which displays a datagrid. I need to implement functionality to export the data from the grid into an Excel spreadsheet. So in my Export function in my code behind, I do this: [Start Code] Context.Response.Clear(); Context.Response.AddHeader(... "attachment;filename=myexce... = "application/vnd.xls"String... sw = new StringWriter();HtmlTextWriter htw = new ......

Installing Webpart to Sharepoint 2007

Step 1 - Install assembly to the GAC

Step 2 - Add to Safe Controls in Sharepoint's web.config

Step 3 - Upload .dpw file into Sharepoint

Step 4 - Restart IIS (might not be needed, but just to make sure)

This *should* be all you need to do...for some reason I'm still hitting up with some errros though...

Telerik Rad Grid in Web Part

Anyone have any experience getting the Export to Excel functionality working properly in a Sharepoint web part?

Specifically what's happening is that if I export the file, when I try to use a control on the page afterwards that provides a postback nothing happens.

Check this thread on the Telerik forums for more background.

Thanks,

D

Microsoft has "Community", it doesn't need a "Cult"

Michael Singer posted an article on Information Week about Microsoft's seeming lack of community (Thanks to Scott for originally posting about the article on GWB). I think that he might have gotten some misinformation from less-than-reliable sources, so I wanted to go through his article and give a Microsoft-ie point of view. Let's review the article shall we? "Apple has one. So does the Java community, Oracle, IBM, and Google. Lord knows anyone who uses Linux or free and open source software is ......

Why Venom Can't Be In Spiderman 4

My review of Spiderman 3 generated quite a few comments, many of which had a glaring misunderstanding throughout: whether Venom could come back in a subsequent Spiderman movie. *SPOILER ALERT* In the movie, we see Pete throw a pumpkin bomb into the symbiote, and Eddie jumps at it...the bomb explodes, Eddie is vaporized and only a few pieces of the symbiote are left. Re-read that part: EDDIE IS VAPORIZED...he's dead...gone...Venom didn't have any powers like Cloak did where people could be "swallowed" ......

Workout

I decided to change up the workout a bit today to keep things a bit fresh. I also bumped up the weights. Some of hte leg machines were down, which sucked (no leg presses for me today): 5 minute bike warmup 20 minute 1:1 on the bike (alternating between level 3 and level 20 every minute) 1 x 10 Bicep Curls @ 25lbs 2 x 10 Bicep Curls @ 30 lbs 3 x 10 Bench Flys @ 30 lbs 3 x 10 Triceps @55 lbs 3 x 10 Plate Raises @ 30 lbs 1 x 10 Quads @ 170 lbs 2 x 10 Quads @ 180 lbs Some other leg exercise that I did ......

Go Go GoDaddy!

So my church's domain name expired the other day. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal...you just renew and have it re-activated. But let's backup a bit and look at some backstory... The domain was registered with Registerfly. Registerfly has had some pretty disturbing press as of late, which you can catch up on at Bob Parson's blog here and here (Bob is the CEO of GoDaddy). Regardless, my domain was expired and I needed it up FAST...not so much for any web presence, but because the emails of people ......

Salaried Overtime in the States

I'm just curious... I was reading the latest issue of Men's Health, and one of the features throughout the magazine is an "Ask the Experts" thing. One of the experts is Dan Abrams who covers law-based questions. So this guy writes in about how he's in California and his boss wants to fire him because he's not putting in "enough hours", although those expected hours would be unpaid overtime! He asks whether his boss has any right doing this. The response from Dan is that he probably does, because ......

Workout Regiment

So last week i finally told my trainer that I wasn't going to be coming back to train anymore. Yesterday morning was my first session on my own at the local YMCA in my area of town. Here's a run-down of what I did (this is part update for anyone following the whole road-to-betterment, and part for me to journal for myself) 10 minute bike warmup 20 minute 1:1 on the bike (alternating between level 3 and level 20 every minute) 3 x 10 Clovers @ 20 lbs 100 crunches 4 x 10 Tricep 21's (7 starting motion, ......

WARNING - This post gives away massive spoilers to the new Spiderman 3 movie. Qui-Gon eh?

Apparently I'm Qui-Gon Jinn...which is ok I guess...being a good guy isn't really so bad, except that we always get the crappy hair cuts and threads.

Take the quiz yourself and see what you end up with.

The Road To GeeksWithBlogsMania Starts Here and Now!

We've seen so many great fueds over the years, culminating with the biggest show of them all: Wrestlemania! Hulk and Andre...Hulk and Slaughter....Hulk and Rock... And of course there are many others...HHH, John Cena, Undertaker...but now we're looking ahead to our own geeky version of the big-dance, and the main event is shaping up to be a doozy.... Fresh off his recent fued with an unamed vet of the geek world, Justice has now seemingly become the target of Tim Hibbard! It would seem that Tim's ......

Weirdest Suggestion Made By Bike Store Employee

So I went to my local bike shop to see if my mountain bike was ready (brought it in for a spring tune-up). The girl working went on a search for it, then came back telling me that it was on the next group but wouldn't be ready until tomorrow. Then she says this: "We'll call you though when its ready, so you don't have to make a trip down and waste extra fossil fuels." I somehow stammered out that I was just on my way home from work and wanted to check in...but seriously...waste extra fosil fuels?! ......

VB Launches MASSIve Attack on C#

The war for which .NET language will reign supreme just got a little dicier folks. For a while now everybody has been slowly moving toward C# as the defacto .NET language of choice. Big names in the .NET world have been showing off coding samples in C# for a long time, books have been filled with C#-only samples...it seemed that we were all moving toward a new future where semi-colons and curly-brackets would reign supreme. That was...until now. The VB.NET team has launched a new weapon in its quest ......

Heroes Anyone?

Did anyone watch Heroes last night?

My PVR isn't smart enough to know when the show goes over the hour, so I missed whatever happened after future Hiro gets killed, and Wolverine and Magne...I mean Peter and Sylar are about to face off.

Anyone able to fill me in on what I missed?

Compression in IIS 6.0

At my Calgary Code Camp presentation on ASP.NET, the subject of compression came up. We were talking about the benefits of using CSS adapters to reduce the amount of markup that gets sent over the pipe and someone in the audience commented that IIS compression was also something that had worked well for them. I found this excellent post on Scott Forsyth's blog talking about how to enable it in IIS 6, and its not as trivial as simply clicking a checkbox. There's edits to the Metabase that need to ......
