Becoming A Better Developer - Book Review: ASP.NET 2.0 Illustrated

I recently finished going through ASP.NET 2.0 Illustrated by Alex Homer and Dave Sussman. This is an excellent book to have on your shelf as a reference, but its also a fantastic read for someone who wants to start learning ASP.NET 2.0. You need to understand the focus of the book though (or what I interpreted as the focus of the book): a walk through of all the features of ASP.NET 2.0 including web parts, security, controls, object model, masterpages, themes, etc. Excellent coverage and very easy ......

Calgary Code Camp Pictures

Bill posted some pics from the code camp this past weekend in Calgary, and I thought I'd add some of my own: This pic is a code camp tip that you all should take to heart: if you're going to be taking pictures of incredibly good looking presenters, then please...for the love of God...have a camera that can HANDLE taking such sexy pictures! You have one minute...can you find JP Boodhoo in this picture? This one is especially hard because Justice AND myself are both in this picture...standing side ......

Code Camp Comes To An End...

The Calgary Code Camp has come to an end, and it was a great success! Kudos to James and his team for putting together a fantastic developer event! Some highlights: I performed my first code-camp presentation (on ASP.NET and solution architecture) and I think it went pretty well. Can't wait for another opportunity to speak at an event like this. I sat through JP's talk on Monorail which was excellent, Steven's talk on Castle, and Donald's discussion on Continuous Integration practices...all excellent! ......

Oh Yeah...so what did we do for Bristowe this time?

Dev Teach started the trend of having some fun with Canadian DE John Bristowe. And today at the Calgary Code Camp is no exception. It was announced in my presentation that he's going to be releasing his own line of Calgary Flame jerseys for the 2008 season. He even modelled it in the promo photos! I personally think the Away jersey goes better with his eyes. D ......

Calgary Code Camp - After Lunch

Just about to start into JP Boodhoo's presentation on Monorail, which I'm actually very intrigued ot hear about. My session went really well, I'm pretty happy about it. I messed up on having too many folders with trial projects around...stalld the presentation for a bit...but I was able to get past it and we had some great discussion. Thanks to everyone that came out to my session! I brought up the use of CSS generated controls, and someone in the audience brought up how IIS 6 has an option (apparantly ......

Eric, why are you so sexy?

It's that time to ask my co-worker Eric Legault why he's so sexy. So Eric, why are you so sexy?

"Because like Andy Sandburg's brother in law Roy, I give succulent rubdowns."

(watch this for a point of reference)

6 Months to a Better Developer You

Justice reminded me that I'm supposed to tag some people on our little accountability program (his and mine). So here it goes: Shane Sholdice Joel Poiron (time to get a blog buddy!) Kelly Cassidy W00t! D ......

Matthew Good - Long Way Down Acoustic

If you're a fan of Matthew Good, he's posted an impromptu acoustic performance of Long Way Down on his blog. You can watch it here.

How I am becoming a better developer in 6 months

Justice started a little challange, and i'm answering the call! Basically the idea is about accountability: what are you doing on an ongoing basis that is increasing your skills as a developer? Justice has pushed the envelope somewhat...he's going to be reading a book every week from now until October. That's very aggresive and shows his determination, focus, and apparantly lack of any sort of life outside the range of his Macbook's screen. (Note that one of his books is "MaxOS: The Missing Manual". ......

I love my new mouse!

I picked up a new wireless mouse tonight: a Microsoft Laser Mouse 5000. This thing is freaking sweet! First off...I didn't realize that there was a difference between an optical mouse and a laser mouse. I mean, one could figure out that the optical uses LED based technology while the laser uses something else. But at first I thought I had a bad mouse: there's no light underneath it. Turns out that the laser is invisible...who'd have thunk? Second, Microsoft has some sweet software bundled with this ......

Microsoft, I just want to cancel my account...

I had a smart watch...but I lost it. I need to cancel my account. I go to the Microsoft website instructed in the email...when I select "Cancel" account, I get nothing. Well, I get something, but its useless. Really horrible website btw...not intuitive at all (and I'm usually pretty nice about critquing...) I call the customer account number. Some guy who is very nice tells me that I can't cancel it there...he's going to transfer me to the right department. I get to the new phone menu..."Welcome ......

Nostalgia - .NET 3.0 Flikr Management Prototype

thirteen23 have created a Flikr management application using .NET 3.0 and WPF. .NET 3.0 is obviously required on your system. I haven't really used Flikr much, but Terry seems pretty impressed with it. If you're a Flikr junky too, maybe worth a look. Check out Nostalgia (name of the app) here. D ......

Weird Excel Behavior

I'm doing some work in Excel 2000 and I'm seeing some weird stuff happen with my drop down lists. They only have two values: Yes or No. When I select an option, the text and drop list do one of two things: get bigger or smaller. But not just the text...the actual box too! This seems really weird...I'm not doing anything in VBA that would make this alter the size...although, with that said, I have noticed that the buttons on the top will resize if I move the cell widths beneath them...although the ......

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do....

There comes a time when you just have to be honest with yourself and about how you feel...about where your goals are and whether their in line with the other's. That's where I'm at right now. It's been a good few months, and i've grown personally in so many different ways...but its time to part ways...its time to say goodbye. I'm breaking up with my gym. Now, this may seem like a silly thing, but my gym is not normal. It's not a huge "let's take whatever walks in the door" type of gym. You have to ......

Saving SNL

I was just talking with a co-worker, and we came up with the trifecta line up that will save the SNL season: Justin Timberlake (MUST have Jimmy Fallon guest-star for the Bee-Jees skit) Christopher Walkin Alec Baldwin If SNL simply rotated these three for a whole year, I guarantee ratings would go up...and so would the quality of the content. Oh, and bring back Chris Parnell, Haratio Sans, and for the love of God bring back Tracey Morgan! Back to work... D ......

Testing File Upload with Live Writer

Very kewl (not just my artwork and mad skillz with Paint.NET)! Live Writer now lets you specify an FTP location to upload pictures! Now you don't have to manually upload images to one spot and mess around with remembering what the file was called and where you put it...awesome feature! D ......

Mad Mexican "Save The Easter Seals" Site

The Mad Mexican has asked me to post up a little website for him explaining a bit more about the plight of the Easter Seals. You can view it at my website for right now until I find a more permanent place for it.

Mobile Developers Finally Recognized!

For the longest time, MCAD and MCSD certifictions revolved around windows, web, and services. With the new certification structure, the door has been opened wide for developers of specific technologies to finally be recognized as specialists in their field; and that now includes mobile development! Microsoft has two new Technology Specialist certifications: Windows Mobile 5.0 - Application Developer and Windows Mobile Designing, Implementing, and Managing This is great news for those of us that have ......

Like I said: American women belong in the kitchen baking Apple Pie, not playing hockey...

I posted back in '06 about how the American women's hockey team should stick to something more their speed...like ringette maybe.

I guess they didn't take my advice, but at least they received a nice silver platter to serve their pie on at their post-ringette gettogethers. :P

Mad Mexican "Save the Easter Seals" Campaign Update!

Wow, its only been a week since the initial post about how the Mad Mexican wants to help save the Easter Seals, and already support has started to pour in! On behalf of the Mad Mexican, he wants to send his thanks to everyone who's helped out so far, but there's still work to do! Any amount will help: $5, $10, $20. We know that with the millions of fans the Mad Mexican has, we'll be able to blow open the record books of support for this worthy cause*. To pledge your support, just visit THIS LINK! ......

The Next Phase of Mobile Development

Chris posted on his blog about the demise of the Axim PPC line. Interestingly enough, when you look at the types of devices entering the Windows Mobile marketplace there are two distinct lines forming: communication enabled devices and rugged devices. Take a look at the list of Mobile devices on Microsoft's site. Only 4 of them (one being the cancelled Axim) are wife-wants-to-electronicall... grade, while the others are "rugged" or specialied to fit a certain environment. Compare ......

BC Cartoonist Dies

B.C. Cartoonist Johnny Hart passed away on Saturday (read the CNN report here). B.C. has been one of my favorite strips in the daily paper for some time, and I always got a kick out of the Biblical references that were thrown in considering that the strip is about cavemen (Johnny Hart was a Christian). Have you ever stopped to realize that most of our (those of us that are 30 years old +/- 5 years) childhood heroes are starting to die off? Mr. Rogers, Mr. Dressup, Charles Schultz, Captain Kangaroo...now ......

Easter Time Is Here Again

So Easter has finally come upon us, and millions of children are currently nervously sleeping, waiting for the morning when they'll run around their homes searching for chocolate scattered in odd places. We had our family Easter meal today...and let me tell you: protein extraveganza! Turkey AND ham, potatoes, stuffing and crrranberry sauce (ha! I always think of Little Richard from that insurance commercial when I think of cranberry sauce now). My sister-in-law made some pumpkin pies as well (yeah, ......

I've Committed Social-Geek Suicide...

I did the unthinkable...I caved into peer pressure...please forgive me. I signed up with Facebook. All my non-geek friends are doing it though, and its still kind of geeky right? I mean...its used through a browser at least...so that's somewhat technical? There's some weird stuff about Facebook though...like how you have the option of "poking" someone. I really don't want to poke anyone, especially guys like Kyler or Shaun (I can't even give you a link to their Facebook page because you have to be ......

The Mad Mexican Needs Your Help!!!

Many of you have already heard about the exploits of the Mad Mexican and his reunion with Johnny "The Pimp" Bristowe at Dev Teach last year. Well, the Mad Mexican needs your help and he asked me to post a blog entry on his behalf. He heard though the grapevine that Easter Seals, a charity organization that helps people with physical disabilities, is looking for donations (I think the Mad Mexican still thinks this is about sea animals and the fact its April, but whatever...). But being the man of ......

Eric, why are you so sexy?

It's that time again to ask Eric Legault, Microsoft Outlook MVP, why he's so sexy? So Eric, why are you so sexy? "Because I'm like Jack Tripper...I'm vaguely homoerotic, blatently heterosexual...but really all I want to do is date* two chicks at once." How awesome would Three's Company have been if Eric Legault had played Jack Tripper... D *Note: The word "date" has been substituted here to ensure we keep a "PG" rating for this blog ......

Try Again Justice...

Oh Justice Gray, apparantly I hit I nerve when I said that you looked like Clay Aiken. And now look what you've done: you've gone and made yourself look like Bruce Campbell's "Ash" character from Army of Darkness!

:P
