Overriding Unique ID's in Web Controls

I came accross a scenario where I needed to override the ASP.NET-assigned id name of a label control that is used within a datalist control on a webform. The problem is that, because of ASP.NET's naming scheme, you get names like ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_N... (Read the MSDN article that explains this here.) Not the easiest or nicest to play with when you need to do something as simple as, say, use anchors on a page for navigation. To make a long story short, there are two ......

Eric, why are you so sexy?

It's time once again for another installment of "Eric, why are you so sex?", the blog entry where I ask my co-worker and Microsoft Outlook MVP Eric Legault why he's so sexy.

So Eric, why are you so sexy?

"Cause the fingers do the walking and the rest do the talking!"

On fire!

5 Dysfunctions of a Team - You need to read this book!

Excellent book that's very easy to read but yet delivers on how to identify deficiencies in your team as well as suggestions on how to overcome them. I did a lunch and learn for our dev team on this and it was a very positive experience!

Check out more on the book here.

Don't be fooled: Owners Banning MSN = Control Issues

I've heard this morning about another company where MSN has been banned as a mode of communication, this time under the banner of "Common Courtesy". Bull$h1t is what I say to that. I worked at a company a few years back where they tried to implement the same sort of deal...they ended up switching to an internal-only MSN solution. Why was this ok? Because they could record and monitor all communicaitons that occur. Oddly enough, both of these companies are run by people with sales backgrounds. Is ......

Eric, why are you so sexy?

It's time once again for another installment of "Eric, why are you so sexy?", where I ask my co-worker and Outlook MVP Eric Legault why he's so sexy.

Eric, why are you so sexy?

Eric - "Because I know the entertainment value of 9 volt batteries and breath mints."

Rock on brother, rock on...

Never mind Vista, here's REALLY trusting Microsoft...

I'm an MCSD. I've passed all the exams. However, when my testing center registered me, they created an entirely new MCP ID for me (WTF?!), so now I have two accounts linked to me, with two sets of exams passed on them. Great. Should be easy to clear it up right? That's what I thought...until I was told that I had to send in a copy of my birth certificate (just a scan) as proof. Ok, not crazy about that, but whatever (not crazy about the fact that I'm pretty sure they've outsourced the center to India ......

Unemployed Skeletor's Video Blog of Evil

You gotta love it when older geeks dress up like their childhood play-things and make video blogs that get posted on YouTube. Like this one:

Apparantly Skeletor has been hitting the Castle Greyskull Buffet one too many times too. ;)

Eric, why are you so sexy?!

I'm starting a new feature here on my blog. I have a co-worker, Eric Legault, and every so often I ask him

"Eric, why are you sooooo sexy?"

And he replies with some witty, off the wall comment. So here is the first response:

"Because 4 out of 5 Mexican midgets agree."

Rock on Eric...rock on...

Beauty and the Geek Season 3 - A guy named Scooter wins the money...fitting...

Remember Muppet Babies, and Scooter and Skeeter? Anyhoo.. Kyle posted about watching the season 3 finale of Beauty and the Geek tonight, and I thought I'd weigh in on my thoughts. The right team definately won tonight. Scooter and Megan definately were the most changed team. I mean, if you would have put Nate in with Jennylee (they had a thing going on), then maybe...although I was a big fan of Neils too (Oooo, you tough my tra la la...my ding ding dong...ha, classic!...I actually downloaded that ......

The GWB Post Counter, Weight, and my rock hard Glutes!

You've no doubt been glued to the banter between myself and Scott Kuhl about the GWB posting score board. Of course, this is all in good fun (don't want people thinking that there's any animosity going on...in the summer we get together on a beach and have margarita parties...well, until Chris J. comes to spoil the party!) Speaking of Chris J., how DID he come out of no-where and move into third place? Was he always there, or wasn't there someone else that held that position?! George Clingerman also ......

I'm on to you Kuhl!

I'm sure many of you have noticed an increase in the number of posts by one Scott Kuhl. In fact, in this post he even tries to smooth things over with Chris "You better not post more than 4 posts a day on the main feed, and they BETTER not be huge reams of code showing something stupid!" Williams. But I know the real story. You see, for a while Scott, myself and some other guy...Hubbard? Habbard? Lim Hybura...that was his name...or was it Tim? Anyway, there were three of us neck and neck for the ......

Looking for a song about a dad...

This is driving me nuts. There was a music video I saw a while back, and I can't remember who sang it or what the title was, so hopefully someone can help. The video was all cartoon (like a 6 year old drew a cartoon with crayons) and it was this kid riding in a car with his dad, and the song was about his dad and I think how he was riding a bulldozer or something...and was a spaceman...and something else. It's just one of those things that you can't remember and it drives you nuts...anyone know what ......

If I was writing a Mac commercial...

So my buddy Justice sent me a link to YouTube for one of the new Mac/PC commercials where PC is going in for "surgery" because he needs to upgrade to Vista. Let's see how this would play out if I was writing it: Mac: Hello, I'm a MacPC: And I'm a PC/PC is dressed up in a sweet look while Mac is dressed in a hospital gown with a suitcase Mac: Hey PC, I thought you had surgery today?PC: Yeah, I had to upgrade my video card because of Vista, but its all good. It was just day surgery...in and out! Where ......

Meeting the IT Peeps of Tomorow

I had an opportunity yesterday to participate in Red River College's Directions business conference. I was part of roundtable discussions at the end of the day, where students were able to sit and talk with people from industry and get some perspectives on what the job market is like in Winnipeg and what they can expect. It was interesting hearing them have the same concerns that we did back in college: worrying about the co-op placements and whether grades were good enough to get a good gig, what ......

I Survived the All Nighter

So I posted yesterday about how I was gearing up for the all-nighter that happened last night/this morning. But first, some backstory to fill in: So after posting yesterday morning, I proceeded to leave the house and head to the gym. I messed up entering the code to our ADT panel, but re-entered it without a problem. I left the house, then realized I forgot my wallet. Back in I went. My wife tells me that ADT called. I listened to the message and they were calling about a distress signal that was ......

Using Free Text Box Safely in ASP.NET 2.0

We're using the Free Text Box control in an internal web app. This is one of those controls that lets you put in rich text marked up with HTML tags behind the scenes. Problem though is that when you submit the page, you'll get an error warning you that some shifty looking code might be attached to the response. So how do you handle something like this safely. 1. Set the validateRequest in the page declaration to False. You can do this for the entire site in the web.config if you want, but that would ......

Here I am...at 6:00 in the morning...

Well, technically its only 5:23 AM. Couldn't sleep after getting up at 4:30. Went to bed at 10, so at least got 6 hours in. My bio-clock seems to kick off at 5:00 now since I started working out (which I'll be doing in a half hour). Today will be one of the longest days of my life. Not because of any work stuff, or family crisis. No, because as a youth group leader I'm going through yet another rite of passage (for the 3rd or 4th time) and locking myself in a church with 20 or so youth and not sleeping ......
