Setting up Email with Telus

So I got my wife a Treo 700wx for Christmas. She loves it...its very kewl. We've encountered a few challanges though with it.

Challange #1 - Email

For some reason, I can't get the pop3 email to work on it. I've got the right username, the right password, and the right pop server in there. I'm not sure about the smtp server (anyone know what Telus uses for their SMTP server?), but regardless: it doesn't connect and gives an error message. We were able to get Messenger working though (VERY kewl). Just need email...

Challange #2 - Mac

So at first I thought "Hey, I'll just download The Missing Synch which will allow my wife to synch up with iCal and AddressBook on the Mac, as well as install applications...because, y'know, its just cab files that get pushed over. Unless its got a Windows installer...which totally screws installing anything from the Mac desktop. Luckily I can install from my laptop, so it doesn't matter...but most Windows Mobile 5.0 apps only have Windows installers and not Mac friendly...which makes sense...but I just never thought about that.

Challange #3 - No Case?

I mean, we would have bought one anyway...but my cheap, old HP iPaq came with a pretty good base case for protection...but Palm puts nothing in for a Treo? Just odd...

But otherwise, I'm really liking the device. She'll be able to keep in touch with me way easier, and also have the ability to organize with the scheduling and task list features. I'll keep you posted on how we find it...but so far very impressed.

Checked out the Treo's product page http://www.palm.com/us/support/treo/treo700wxtelus/ it looks like a pretty sweet unit, I would guess that the SMTP server would be smtp.telus.ca or something to that effect. I wonder if you cannot get the email working because of some kind of firewall issue or the server requires SSL or some other type of encrypted connection or it connects to different ports or something. 12/26/2006 10:20 PM | Willyd

Wouldn't be a firewall issue...Telus uses an EVDO network, which is like high-speed over cellular, so I connect directly to the Telus network (high speed throughout Winnipeg...very kewl!).

I tried smtp.telus.ca, but its not even the sending that it fails on...it can't connect when checking for email either it seems...kinda weird.

POP3 is the server
incoming should be pop.telus.net
outging shoud be smtp.telus.net

Hi,
I sent an e-mail to a friend in B.C. today, and it was returned, saying 554 error. No valid recipients. I had only gotten his e-mail address two hours earlier,by 'phone.

What is the problem?

I've had telus as a provider for over a year and I'm glad I didn't give up my A.O.L. email address because telus just doesn't work. for example I know I have mail but when i go into my inbox it shows empty, sure glad telus doesn't have the mail contract 9/3/2007 3:45 PM | gladys jones

Interesting. I have the Treo 700wx from Telus, had i t for one month. I cannot get ANY of my emails to work with it. My work email, my home email, or my dad's email accounts. None of them will work. I've set up the POP and SMTP servers correctly. I spoke to telus on the phone, they can't get it to work either. Sent me to level 3 problem solving. Here's the solution I came up with:

Create a GMail account and access it via the mobile web browser that comes with Windows Mobile.

I have way more control over email via the web interface and way less hassles than trying to get the pop3 stuff working.

That's my only solution folks, sorry.

Incoming IMAP server: imap.telus.net
