Vista Upgrade and Virtual PC 2007

I encountered a bit of weirdness with Virtual PC 2007 Beta while upgrading to Vista. When I went to run it after the upgrade, it told me that the beta had ended and wouldn't launch the app. I checked the site and the beta is still listed as lasting until March of 2007. Odd... So long story short, I uninstalled the VPC 2007 I had on my machine, then re-downloaded and re-installed it from the beta download site, and its working no problem. So just in case anyone else experiences it, the beta is still ......

How to Access Send-To Folder in Vista

Bill Tudor posted about trying to get into the Send-To folder in Vista to add your own shortcuts. He was getting a message saying that "Access is Denied". I got the same issue, even after turning off user account control. I did some digging and found the answer! If you go to C:\Users\<your username>, you'll see shortcuts for SendTo, Start Menu, My Documents, etc., but you won't be able to access any of them. That's because they aren't really shortcuts, but are "programmatic junction points". ......

Not So Great Workout...

Well, it was a good workout this morning...second one in as many days. Today was a "Cardio Day", so it looked something like this: 10 min bike10 min treadmill3 x 60 lunges (with weights)3 x 150 sissys4 x 40 kick backs/kick ups3 x 100 sumos10 side to sides, varied difficulty level It was a pretty intense workout, and I didn't finish all my set. It was more of a time issue more than anything; that many exercises in 2 hours is alot for the pace I go. I started later to (9am), so by 11 I still had all ......

Vista install taking FOREVER

I started my Vista install late this morning. It's now almost 4, and its STILL installing! At least this time the installer was nice enough to inform me that it would take several hours, but I'm still surprised at how long this has been. Btw, one bit of info that we've encountered installing this around the office: if you install Vista, and after putting in your license key it tells you that the installer had an error occur and must be restarted, and all subsequent attempts to install do the same ......

Blog Tag - Matt says I'm It!

Matt posted on his blog about his 5 things nobody knew about him, and I'm now tagged, so here are mine: 1. I never graduated High School. That's right...I'm a drop out. I only needed a few more credits, but grade 11 math was a bore and besides, I was making good money at a certain restaurant with golden arches, which I was convinced I'd spend the rest of my life making a career out of. I got to the rank of Second Assistant Manager before realizing that the lifestyle we wanted didn't match the career ......

One More Bond Item...

WARNING! This post contains spoilers for the movie...if you don't want to know about a particular scene, and want the entire movie to be a surprise, please don't highlight the text below. For those that do, highlight away! So there's one scene in the movie, and its the worst torture scene I've ever seen in my life. They have Bond (I won't say "who" has Bond...that doesn't really matter, and I don't want to give away too much here), and they bring out a wicker chair. They then proceed to cut the seat ......

Workout

Back from the gym, and had a pretty thourough set this morning 10 min on the bike 10 min on the treadmill, 15-elevation and 3.9 speed - but this time I didn't slow down at all...I held onto the bar and walked for most of it, but I didn't have to reduce the speed! Great cardio workout...felt like throwing up afterwards...its always a good cardio if you feel like throwing up afterwards ;) After that it was all weights, which I really like: 15 x 4 Lats/Hogan-Flex (my term)/This thing where you hold ......

A Potporri of Topics: Vista, Bond, Workout...

Vista I finally upgraded my work system to Office 2007, which is fine. But the next step is to go to Vista, and it scares the crap out of me. I'm seeing so many issues that people are having with getting vs.net to run, sql 2005 issues, general wtf moments with the os, etc. My XP system is running pretty good right now, but I still think starting to work in the new OS is the ticket. So I'm going to try something different: go completely virtual for my development. A buddy of mine works at a place ......

Under 280 for the first time in a long time

So I weighed myself this morning, and I'm sitting at 279.6! Under 280 for the first time in over a year!

D

I can't lift my arms over my head.

So today was the second really gruelling workout. I was still sore from the one two days ago, and believe me: I'm going to be REALLY feeling this tomorrow morning if not sooner. I can't lift my arms over my head yet (putting my ear-plugs in is kinda funny). So my funny story from the workout: I lie down on a mat ready to do my first set of 150 crunches. There's about 3 people on the bikes next to me, another person doing some iron-crosses next to me. I lift my legs up, pull my head up, and count ......

Oh...right...triceps...forgot about those...

My body is getting used to getting up at 5 AM (only when I go to sleep by 10ish though it seems, or if an alarm is blaring in my ear at 5), and this morning was no different. Except...well, except I had a little note when I got up. "Dear D'Arcy, How are you? We're SORE AS HELL! We're your tricep muscles, and although you probably forgot about us, we're the muscles that help you do your pushups. We just wanted to thank you for deciding that we needed to get out of our dormant state and start becoming ......

First REAL Workout

Last week was all about getting my cardio in place...did workouts on the bike...feeling pretty good. Today was my snap into the reality that I've chosen to insert myself into. First up, 20 minutes on the bike...a warmup...no problem. Then it was time to hit the treadmill. I was set to 3.9 (which I'm guessing is in either MPH or KM/H...and if it wasn't, it sure felt like it) and an incline of 15 (which is like a somewhat steep hill). I had 10 minutes on that, and was instructed to hold onto the bar ......

WoW Priest Back in Action!

So I was having some weird issues with one of my WoW characters recently. For some reason I would try to select my undead priest Sinquisitor (nice little play on words there eh? I kind of think of him as the Jerry Fallwell of the undead..."I smite thee sinner!"...anyhoo), but every time I selected it and clicked "Enter World", it would just put me back to the character select screen. Frustrating...only one of my main three characters that would do this. I got a response today from Blizzard support ......

That's Right - I just Blog-p0wn3d you!

That's right Jason, I just surpassed you with this post on the all-time GWB poster-ratings! BOOYA!

Watch out Tariq...just because you have a kewl name like some boss from a NES game like Punch Out or Street Fighter Alpha doesn't mean that you aren't GOING DOWN!

Guess What?

Guess what Jason Olson? (see next post)

Suggestions for Brian

I'm sure many of you have, in between reading all the tech and geek-life rants on here, read the blog posts of Brian Scarbeau. He's the computer teacher who's been posting about his experience teaching computer science to high school students. Recently they've been looking at DNN and creating student portals. But I thought, y'know, true computer science classes should not only provide students with skills using technology, but also prepare them for the profession they're going into. So I offer Brian ......

MCSD...Finally!

In passed the 70-301 exam this morning (finally), which now gives me my MCSD designation! w00t! I kept putting this one off over and over since the summer, but finally thought "what the heck, I might as well just write it. If I fail it again (I've taken it a few times already), then I'll just focus on my 2.0 cert upgrades for my MCAD". So I studied for a couple of hours this morning, didn't really prep, and went in totally relaxed with a "so what" attitude. about 2/3 of the way through I was feeling ......

The Holiday: 4 out of 5

So tonight I went on a date with my wife to go see The Holiday, the movie starring Jack Black, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Cameron Diaz. We wanted to see something light, funny, romantic...and this movie was definately all three. Don't go for realism, don't go expecting Titanic, but do go if you want a nice story with a happy ending and palpable drama (unlike Derailed, which you should see if you enjoy feeling uncomfortable...although I'd still recommend that movie too...but just way different...anyhoo).Also, ......

Diet Woes

So I started my diet plan yesterday. Luckily I only have to do it every second day, because the first day was a real struggle. Now, at this point you're probably thinking that I gave in to the pizza party we had for our church youth group last night, or that I had a huge helping of carb-filled pasta at Olive Garden yesterday. But no, that's not the struggle I'm talking about. Y'see, most people associate "diet" with "less-food". But no...my "diet" plan consists of 5 meals a day. Meal 1: 2 eggs, bowl ......

Bike Workout

Just got back from my third work out at the new gym, and it was pretty intense (of course, running 10 ft might be considered intense for an out of shape-almost 300 lb man). If you're ever at the gym, and want to try something different for your cardio, give this a shot (I'm assuming that all bikes work off of the same sort of "level" system, where the higher the level you go the more resistance you feel.): 10 minutes at lvl 1 (warmup) 10 minutes at lvl 3 10 minutes 1:12 - alternate between levels ......

New Geek Week Episode (#5)

There's a new Geek Week episode where they attend the ComiCon in San Francisco. Pretty funny, and definately worth your time to check it out. One of the funniest segments is when this guy tries out some geek pick up lines on booth babes. I won't spoil all of them, but for those of you that aren't going to watch here are a few gems: "Do you want to go back to my hotel room and I'll let you do +5 damage on my ass?" "You gotta pet the hobbit if you want the ring baby" "I AM the droid you're looking ......

The internet depresses me...

Remember back in the day when the internet was (relatively) new, and we were all discovering the joys of hand-written web pages (with notepad, no graphical stuff), playing XWing vs. Tie Fighter online in MSN's Zone (I was part of LSF: Last Starfighter League which routinely playing in Weekends of War...that's WoW before it became World of Warcraft), and chatting it up with friends on ICQ (who uses THAT anymore eh?). But now...now the internet is just so...BORING. I mean, its become as routine as ......

Now if only I could have Rogers network with Telus' phones...

I hate our cellular carriers in Canada. Hate hate hate. The phone selection sucks. Well, not really...but it depends on who you're with. You see, I'm with Rogers...and Rogers sucks when you want a Windows Mobile 5.0 phone. They have one, and its a clunky, ugly HP device. Horrible. They have a Treo 650, but its Palm OS only. They have Blackberry's all over the place, but who cares? I want a freaking Mobile 5.0 device! Telus has a bunch of them...they have the new Treo ZW (or WZ or whatever), and it ......

Today is the last day of my old life

I've posted before about wanting to get in shape, lose weight, and generally get into a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunatley the last few times I've tried haven't worked out in the long term. But now I think I'm in the best position to make some real changes.I've enlisted the help of Elite, a local fitness outfit headed up by the former trainer for our CFL team. I go for my first work out tomorrow morning at 6AM, and I also get my new diet tomorrow morning as well. That's right...diet...as in "I can ......

Nothing is free...even a free search engine

Alex posted about an interesting article (click here) that talks about how Google has an immense amount of info on all of our search queries, and the possible danger to our privacy. I guess here's my take though: Google is not a non-profit, for the betterment of the internet organization. It's a company. Although their search engine is free to use, that doesn't mean that us using it means that we're not bound by their rules as far as data collection and how that is used. I think maybe we've gotten ......

James Kim Found...but not alive. :(

James Kim was found dead today, a man who's life passed way too early. Below are links to both the news reports and reactions from his former Tech TV peeps.

Prayers for the Kim Family

Not sure if anyone's been following this, but it caught me off guard when I first heard about it the other day on the news. James Kim, who if you were a vet of Tech TV would remember as being one of the main hardware and device reviewers, as well as an avid digital photography buff, has gone missing in the wilderness trying to find help for his family. You can read the whole story at CNN here. They found his pants, which could be a sign he's suffering from hypothermia and is having delusions that ......

Vacation Day 2: Update

Well...today didn't work out quite the way I was hoping it would. For instance, I haven't played WoW at all today. Remember that 500MB download? Apparantly it added a tonne of functionality...which apparantly is causing issues over at Blizzard. So instead of the early-afternoon time for the realms coming back on line (LightningHoof for my undead characters Sinreaper and Sinquisitor, and Duskwood for my human warrior Kindika, in case anyone wants to add me to their friends list) we're now looking ......

Vacation Day 2: MNF Aftermath and Timewarp

It's almost 9 AM. I know what you all are thinking: you're on vacation, why aren't you in bed?! Well, I'm normally an early riser...plus my back tends to wake me up early to, reminding me that I'm 30 and overweight. My living room has all the typical signs of my MNF gettogether from last night with the guys: plates with chicken wing bones stripped of all flesh, some half-drunk 2-litres of Pepsi and Dr. Pepper, empty chip bags...but man, how about Jeff Garcia?! Great game last night, especially since ......

Vacation Day 1: WoW and Rosie

I'm on vacation this week. I haven't gone anywhere, staying at home and relaxing. We have some errands to run today, but so far this vacation has been excellent. It started with me playing a few hours of WoW this morning and upping my priest to almost lvl 16 (w00t!). In between was checking emails, seeing how badly I lost in Fantasy Football, and also watching all those episodes of CSI:NY that I had DVR'd over the last month but never had time to watch them. My DVR is now free of recordings other ......

I can do WHAT with my 360 and a USB cable?

Apparantly Circuit City has some inside scoop on some technology unknown to everyone else. Check the pic here.

Law and Order SVU: install the what?!

I was watching this week's Law and Order SVU episode (love my PVR) this morning. One of the characters is a "computer geek" (oddly enough, played by Bob Sagat). There's a scene where he's at his computer firm and is scolding one of his employees. They're at her desk, and the computer appears to be a Mac (the keyboard was from a Mac anyway) and he utters this spew of garbage: "If you don't install the service pack on the cluster, you open the network up to a back oriface attack." Yes, they used the ......
