Microsoft hires ex-'Apprentice' star as judge - CNN.com

Interesting article about how Microsoft is putting together their own cross between "America's Greatest Inventor" and "The Apprentice", complete with judges and Carolyn Kepcher. It's a marketing promotion for Office 2007, and the winning business start up will get free storefront rent in Manhatten, software swag, and money. Odd Citrix/Linksys Problem Fixed (Possibly)...

So I posted a while ago about an issue I was having with some thin clients and linksys routers, and how we couldn't access Citrix apps or RDP...but if the rourter was removed from the equation, everything was fine. We did more testing, and had wacky results: a laptop hooked up to a Linksys router would could access the Citrix apps and RDP, but a thin client hooked up to the same router wouldn't. It would work fine at home but not at the locations. Finally we have what we think is a solution. It's ......

What a sh*t day....

Horrible day. Absoultely horrible. First, my PDA died. Now to make it worse, I have no idea where the adapter is. "But D'Arcy, how did you recharge it all this time?" With the USB cable that came with it...which, it turns out, will charge the device as long as it has some battery charge...but if not, you're SOL. Then...THEN...I get home only to find that I've left my laptop power cable back at the office, and although I have an extended battery that says 3 hours, it's really more like 2 if I'm lucky...and ......

The Soul Of A New Microsoft

Business Week has a great article on J Allard and the future execs of Microsoft that are taking the company to Geek 2.0 (their terminology, not mine). Allard is definately the man...seriously, he's like a young Steve Ballmer on brain roids ......

I need a new PDA

My PDA is dead. Not dead-dead...just battery dead. Which sucks...because I usually am really good at keeping it charged, and recharging it when its low...y'know, so that I don't lose all my information on it that I never back up because I'm so good at always charging it. Well now all that info is gone. It's actually just one file that I really needed. And, if I was smarter, I would have at least moved it to the temporary storage device. But oh no...not me...because I always remember to recharge the ......

Curse You Gears of War!!!

By now, everyone and their dog has the song from the recent Gears of War ad in their head: Now the song is called Mad World, by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews (video is below) The song gained noteriety as part of the Donnie Darko soundtrack. So now everyone is in love with the song and, of course, wants a copy. iTunes: DOESN'T HAVE IT! However, its funny that the #2 song on iTunes Canada right now is a version of Mad World done entirely with string instruments off of a collection of tv and movie ......

Odd Citrix/Linksys Problem

We have a computer that accesses a Citrix metaframe webpage over a VPN to launch Outlook, IE, etc.

If the computer is plugged directly into the cable modem, it works fine.

As soon as we put a Linksys router in between the computer and the modem though, we can't get any of the Citrix application icons to display in the web page and they won't load.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is there something with Linksys routers and Citrix that doesn't play nice?

IPod to Zune: What will it take?

I've been looking more into the Zune lately, and I'm very excited for them to come to Canada...but then I was talking with a buddy who recently got one and he informed me that the much talked about rumors of Microsoft giving you every song you've purchased through iTunes for free is just that: rumor. So that got me thinking...how is Microsoft going to try and justify to all those people who have bought hundreds of songs through ITunes to just up and switch to the Zune marketplace? There's no way ......

Grey Cup Thoughts

So the Grey Cup was last night and I was lucky enough to attend it with a buddy. Here are some thoughts and observations: Dear Santa: All I want for Christmas is a new Quarterback in Montreal Thank you Anthony Calvillo for all you've done. Now get lost. Ok, that might be harsh, and yes there is blame to go all around (receivers dropping balls, etc.), but your pivot needs to be dynamic, athletic, and inspiring; acronyms that I don't think describe Calvillo. He is older, and he isn't going to get any ......

SNL - WTF?!

I've been watching SNL for the last few months, and there's something that's been nagging at me...something seems to be missing...but I couldn't figure out what it was. And then it hit me. No Haratio Sanz, and no Chris Parnell. WHAT?! No more Merv the Perv?! No more Carol?! No more guest spots at Christmas with Chris Kattan, Tracey Morgan, and Jimmy Falon doing that stupid "Christmas Time is Here" song?! Boo to Lorne if its true that Parnell was let go due to budget cuts. D ......

CFL Wagers

Just blogging this as a reminder of how much stuff I'm going to get from people after Montreal wins tomorrow. Frank BC wins, I buy him a salmon dinner.Montreal wins, he buys me a Montreal smoked meat dinner. Joel BC RB (can't remember his name) vs. Montreal's Edwards for most yards in the game. If Edwards wins, i get lunch, if no-name wins, I buy lunch. Don (Igloo Coder) He's for BC, I'm for Montreal. Loser has to buy the winner dinner in Montreal at Dev Teach AND wear the other teams jersey during ......

Grey Cup 2006

This Sunday is the CFl's championship game for the coveted Grey Cup! Winnipeg is hosting this year, and its been quite the party scene here. Lots of events going on, the CFL awards were the other night...there's a great atmosphere for sure. But of course, many of you *coughYankscough* may not be familiar with our game and the nuances, so here's a little primer for the big game: Q. Why are they punting, its only 3rd down?!A. We only have 3 downs instead of 4. We don't need 4 shots to make 10 yards. ......

Response to Justice Gray's Blog Post

Justice, Justice, Justice...I'm so sorry that your little trip to the western coast was disrupted! I'd like to point something out though, as I think you misunderstood some of the things that happened on your trip, as per your blog post. "Justice will get into several brushes with the law as he attempts to convince various policemen/traffic cops that they need to park their car - Mrs L will end up using her seductive Asian wiles to convince the police officers to let her through the barricade. " ......

Rememberance Day - It's Gotta Change

In Manitoba, Rememerance Day is not a statutory holiday. If you do work on it, you get perks of double time or something like that. For some reason, some businesses give their employees Monday off (today) since Rememberance Day happened on Saturday, so half the city is a ghost town and half is business as usual (maybe its better to give a day off than pay double time as far as profit/labour costs go?) My question is...WHY?! Could it be that the laws have affected what Rememberance Day has come to ......

A Positive Mac Post

So we finally moved the HP inkjet printer/scanner from the office to where the Mac is. Apple always plays up how "plug and play" friendly Macs are, and I was veeeery skeptical. So I plug in the printer, and plug the usb cable into the Mac...and nothing. No notification, no "we've found new hardware"...nothing. WTF?! How the heck do I get this printer working? I don't even know where the driver disk is! So now I'm ticked...another Mac woe for me to blog about. But then I remembered that there's a ......

Get Ready for 2007's Top Developer Conference!

No, I'm not talking about Tech Ed. I'm talking about THE conference that you need to be at if you're anybody on the scene! That's right, I'm talking Dev Teach 2007! Dev Teach is a week long developer conference occuring in Monrteal, Quebec (that's in Canada for those of you that think everything outside of Texas is either Mexico or 'them northern states'). Last years conference was a blast, and this years will be even better! So make sure to plead with your boss to send you! I'm telling you, whatever ......

Time for a new set of wheels!

So now that I'm 30, I think I need some new wheels...y'know, something that, while I strut down the street, just screams out "that's how I roll". Here are some choices, tell me what you think: I like that it has a basket for holding stuff, and the "Easy Fold" seat handle is a nice touch too! I like the silver and black color scheme a bit better than the red one from up top. The basket looks like it can hold more groceries from the corner store too. Seniorizzle Citisizzle SUVizzle! These is the Escalade ......

Day 1 of 30-something-ness

I thought I'd post to let you all know that I endured the final death-throngs of my 20's and am now comfortably secure in my 30-something-ness. What has my 30's brought me so far? Plenty! For instance, I stayed home today...a day off to emmerse myself in World of Warcraft or Marvel Ultimate Alliance? Hardly! I felt a bit of a head-cold this morning (the sinus pressure type with the free headache), so I decided to work from home. By 11 AM I was out cold though...wasn't feeling too crap hot over the ......

Marvel Ultimate Alliance Review

The last time I bought a game without playing it, and solely on review scores, I got burned. It was Tom Clancey's Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior. I'm sure many who are into the stealthy sort of war game found it incredible. It did have great graphics, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. So not a horrible game, just one that I wasn't finding fun to play. I picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance under the same pretenses: every review I read sang its praises, but I had never actually played the game or even ......

And so the inevitable has arrived...

We were looking out past the road we came fromLooking at redemptionHidden in the landscapeOf loss and love and fire and rainNever would have come this wayLooking for redemptionIn the eyes of sorrow, eyes of rageWhat a sordid histories they playedThe drama of redemption -Jars of Clay, It's finally here, the day I've been ignoring on my calendar all year. The life support systems have been taken off, the last rites have been read, and now all that's left is to wait for the last gasping breaths of my ......

CFL Semi-Final Recap

2 for 2 in my semi final predictions! w00t! Oh how beautiful the sound was as the tears of the hopeful Bomber fans flowed through the streets like a tidal wave of sadness and futility! MUA HA HA! The Argos are going on to meet the Montreal Alouettes for the Eastern Division title, and the Bombers are simply going home. I knew they'd choke, I knew that they'd once again mess it up along the way, even with hosting the Grey Cup this year. But they've shown great improvement over the past years, and ......

Microsoft offering 25% off purchase of Office....for Mac

Microsoft is offering discounts on Office 2004 for Mac. You buy Office, then download/print/fill out a form and send it in with the barcode from the product box. If you're in the USA, you can get the form here. If you're in Canada, you can get the form here. D ......

CFL - Playoff Predictions

I stopped trying to predict CFL game mid-season, since it was just becoming an exercise in futility. The only consistent team this year that you could reliably say "They're going to win" was the BC Lions. Everyone else flip-flopped between greatness and suckfest. Going into the last week of the season there was still a possibility of ending in a three way tie for first in the East...which, considering there are only 4 teams in the East, doesn't say much for the top three teams. However, things all ......

Who'd you vote for in the last election? No, really...who?

Slashdot has an article here about how a solution vendor is trying to stop the HBO backed movie "Hacking Democracy" from being shown, becuase it says that the movie portrays the company in a bad light. I saw the last half of the movie early this morning and let me tell you: EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS TO SEE THIS. However, I don't think the issue lies with the vendor here. There are two issues that need to be addressed: Technology I'm watching them show how they feed sheets through this machine (alright, ......

Canadians <3 Developer Evangelists

<3 is a heart for those of you not down with the MSN lingo these days. Anyway, I just wanted to show you how much us Canadians really love our developer evangelists...like John Bristowe, who's given some lovein by a nameless user group leader in this picture: * * Thank you Steve Martin and the fat Canadian guy for Planes, Trains, and Automobiles...pillows will never be the same D ......

Melancholy and the 5 Day Sadness

I'm very melancholy lately. I'm in the waning light of my twenties...5 more days to be exact. I'm going somewhat squirrly thinking about what I need to do in the last dying gasps of my reckless youth. I was considering streaking through a mall...but that would just look pathetic...I mean, beyond that fact that I'd be streaking through a mall. The papers would probably round up and say I was 30, instead of correctly addressing me as the "29 year old man fighting against his perceived loss of youth". ......
