Tech Ed Back to Orlando

According to this link Tech Ed 2007 is going to go back to Orlando. Joy...couldn't come up with another location eh? Something a little more CENTRAL maybe? Or how about someplace that's just NEW, and different...and not Boston.

Sigh...

November Pinup from Donald Belcham Calander

This month Donald pays homage to the new Borat movie in his own special way...

Is it selling out if the story moves to a different media?

News came out recently that Hollywood studios have pulled backing for the planned Halo movie (based on the game Halo and Halo 2 for the XBox, in case you just crawled out of some non-geeky bomb shelter recently). I was very happy with this, because I'm a firm believer that you don't need to move a story to a different media unless there's a good reason to. How often do we hate seeing amazing books ported as a spectre of its literary self onto the big screen, not for artistic merit or furthering the ......

Children of Men

Go watch this trailer for the next Clive Owens movie. Moving story about a future where women are infertile and the lifespan of the human race is approx 50 years...until a woman is discovered to be pregnant and needs to be sneaked to the coast where a team of scientists will be able to bring her to safety. After the movie, I thought it funny: a moving story about saving one child while over 1 million are aborted in the US alone every year... D ......

Raph...definately Raph...

Happy Birthday to Joseph Calhoon! Joseph mentions on his recent blog post that he was the recipient of a TMNT cake (if you don't know what TMNT is, you're either too young or too old). So this opens up the age old debate: Which is the greatest of the TMNT team?! I'll give you a hint: Oh yeah, Raph was DEFINATELY the best out of the group. Leo...pffft...reminds me of Cyclops from the X-Men movies: WUSSY with a Capital P. Michaelangelo...pffft...I swear that character was born after the orginal authors/artists ......

WYSE S90 Thin Client - Kill That HAgent!

I posted a few days ago about an issue with some WYSE thin client devices slamming DHCP servers with requests, basically simulating a DNS attack. Here's the solution in case anyone comes accross the same issue. WYSE has a product called Rapport (renamed to WYSE Device Manager or something like that) which is a tool to help ensure updates are blanketed to all thin clients deployed on a network. There's two pieces to it: a client piece on the devices and a server that coordinates things. By default ......

Blizzard Admins are a little whacked

So a buddy of mine had to change his character name in WoW because the Blizzard admins decided that his name had strong racial overtones, and could be interpreted in a negative way. I can't believe my friend would pick such a vile name that would bring the heavy handed justice of the Blizzard Admins crushing down on his characters head! I'm going to tell you the name that got rejected, but be warned...young children and women should probably stop reading this post. Are you ready? This is so intense...ok...here ......

Ready to throw it out the window...

I took my iMac in this morning to get the hard drive replaced. I needed a new hard drive, but it took forever to get one in, so my buddy at the Mac repair shop gave me a loaner drive so I could at least enjoy my Mac. Now its home...i turn it on...and it boots up. But the fan...THE FAN!!! It was never this loud before, with either the original drive or the loaner. So now I think I'm going to be taking it back tomorrow...AGAIN. Seriously, this is getting really stupid now. D

Thank you Server, may I please have another IP?

I'm having some weird problems with some hardware. We're rolling out a solution using WYSE thin client terminals (Windows XPe). Great little devices...except apparantly they have a nasty habit of continually asking for IP renewals even though they have an IP address set with a week long lease time. How often are they asking? To the tune of up to 5000 requests in a 24 hour period! Not kewl! We thought maybe it was just the ISP, but it turns out that two different ISP's in two seperate parts of the ......

It's Friday...do you know what your government has been up to?

I'm reading some rather disturbing news articles lately. For instance, this article talks about the recently signed Military Commissions Act, which sounds like anyone can be considered "an enemy combatent" and thrown into jail without having a fair trial. Really. I'm freaked out about the whole notion of elected local police forces as it is...this isn't doing anything to calm my nerves. Is this something that the American people really feel is necessary to keep the country safe, or is it just creating ......

Drow > Any Other Elf

Chris posted wondering what the attraction to the Drow race was. Well, let me tell you...Elf: walks aroundDrow: levitation Elf: normal visionDrow: ability to switch eyes to see in different spectrums Elf: crappy armourDrow: one word - piwafwi Elf: hides behind a rockDrow: inherent ability to create globe of darkness Elf: images of trees, moon, woodland creaturesDrow: sweet-@ss spider imagry Also, we need to clear up some misconceptions about the Drow. Although most of the books have revolved around ......

FINALLY I can play a Drow without just "pretending" (read: make my elf's skin black)!!!

Neverwinter Nights 2 Vault has some articles detailing the new premium races in the upcoming NWN 2, and one is...wait for it...DROW! This is great news for those of us who played through the original NWN asking "Would it be THAT hard to make the Drow seperate from the regular Elves?" To which Bioware responded something to the tune of "Well...we probably should have thought of that, but we didn't, and the game's almost done, so we'll just say we didn't want to ruin the flow of the game by implementing ......

This is just stupid: Schools in USA banning TAG?! (and not the body spray)

I'm sorry, but this article in USA Today is just rediculous. Unbelievable. When will people realize that we don't truly grow and advance without going through adversity?! How would we, as developers, be considered good and experienced without going through the pain of bad projects, tough coding exercises, and playing with newer technologies? So why are children being coddled in the form of banning games like tag to ensure their "safety"?! Safety?! These kids aren't playing with knives, they're playing ......

Igloo Coder 2007 Calandar Pre-Sale!

Those of you with your finger on the pulse of Edmonton's .NET Community will know the name Donald Belcham as someone well respected and identifyable in the community. Not only does he help run the .NET User Group in Edmonton, but he's very active in other endeavors. Most recently, he's decided to take a stab at societies sterotypes of male developers, and is releasing a calendar of himself to show that male geeks can be attractive as well. Below is a sample image from his upcoming calendar. You can ......

Back from the Brink

I know its only been like 6 days since I last blogged, but its felt like a lifetime. So what has happened: Mac Update So it turns out that my woes with Parallels had nothing to do with the software itself...sorta. That screen asking to do a hard reboot is actually a Mac "Grey Screen O' Death" (Windows only had a blue one...so far I've seen a grey and white one with my Mac...). There's some issue with the version I downloaded (or some RC2 update that I didn't download) and my Mac. So still no Windows ......

WoW fans deconstruct South Park - Joystiq

I quiver in fear of these WoW fans and their geekiness. Check out the deconstruction of the recent South Park episode where they bring WoW into the mix here.

TechEd Pulled from Big Easy

Scott Ladewig pointed out a story about Microsoft moving TechEd and some other events out of New Orleans in 2007. This means that we need to begin pushing MS to move Tech Ed to the obvious 2nd choice: Fargo, North Dakota No, I'm not drunk. No, I'm not high. Think about it: Fargo is practically the center of North America! No extreme locations to travel to, minimal time zone changes. Alright...most importantly I could actually drive down. ;) D ......

Sorry Safari, but I'm a Firefox Man Now

Wow...this is a weird feeling: I'm actually entering in a blog entry through a browser on my Mac! I know, I know...it doesn't SOUND exciting, but believe me, it is. Safari is absolutely, without a doubt, the most unstable browser I've ever used. Not only did it crash when I'd try and submit an entry to GWB, but it would also crash for no reason whenever I was viewing Yahoo!'s Fantasy Football stat tracker. Apparantly the Flash plugin for Safari has some defects. So I'm done with that browser now. ......

Burning Out...

Ugh...what a week. Thank goodness that we Canucks have Thanksgiving this weekend so I have Monday off. It's been a crazy week, both work and rl wise. Nothing bad, just really busy. Of course, I'm typing this at 1:23AM local time after finishing up the study for my church youth service I help lead...so apparantly the busyness is still in effect. Life with the Mac has been...interesting. WoW looks amazing, but I still can't get the hang of how to properly install new programs. I know that sounds really ......

Need XPe Help!

Does anyone know how to disable the proxy settings in IE for an XPe device? We want it grayed out so they can't change it. I'm hoping its a registry setting, but the registry on an XPe device seems different than full blown XP.

Thanks

Ruby: The Musical (Featuring music by Lawrence Gowan)

Yes, I'm sure you're all aware of our favorite metro-sexual blogger Justice Gray and how he LOVES that Ruby shiznit (although apparantly his wife doesn't...only a true geek will ignore his marriage obligations to focus on some ancient coding language that he thinks is "catching on"...pffft). However, I'm pleased to announce that Justice will be hitting the road this winter on the Ruby: The Musical Tour (Featuring the music of Lawrence Gowan) Why is there music? Because not only will Justice actually ......

South Park meets WoW

OMG, if you haven't seen this yet, and you can't wait for it to show up on Canuck-o-vision, you owe it to yourself to check this link: The Best South Park Ev-AR! "When Hitler rose to power there were alot of people that just 'stopped playing'. Do you know who those were? The French. Are you French Clyde?" ROFLMAO!!! D ......

Make Love, Not Warcraft

Oh why why WHY don't I get Comedy Central here in Canada? Maybe one of the other stations will pick this up...anyway, South Park is going to be targeting WoW tonight in their season opener. Check out the following clips from YouTube: ......

My IPod officially broke up with my PC

So I happily, and excitedly, downloaded the new Killers album (although I'm still a bit bitter that the new Jakalope hasn't shown up on ITunes yet...but I digress...), and yesterday I updated my IPod with my new Mac's ITunes. But as I was walking to work...no new Killers album! WTF?! Turns out that when you set up your IPod initially, the disk actually gets formatted depending on the OS you're using (Windows or Mac). The problem is that since they're different file formats, you can't just update ......

Work as Extension of Virtue

So we parted ways recently with our general manager at work. It wasn't a bad, performance-wridden parting or anything. We phased out an aspect of our business so we could focus on others, and that was the area he focussed on. I also don't think it was an easy decision either, as Bob was definately seen by everyone as 'Dad' in the organization; we're very close-nit at work, and people leaving, for whatever reason, is very rare...so this did come as somewhat of a shock, but one that was known by all ......

Apparantly I'm Really Bummed About Safari...

K, so I'm dreaming last night...some weird thing about visiting some weird store...can't remember all the details...except this one: I'm talking to some of the sales guys at this weird store, and notice once has a Mac. I ask him to go to Amazon.com with Safari. When he tries to go there, he gets an error saying that javascript is on this page and can't be rendered. I then proceed to tell him about my woes using Safari with certain sites. And I'm not raggin' on GWB...any Microsoft-based site has issues. ......
