Where has Geek-Week been all my life?

Joseph blogged this post about how to embed video with Live Writer...awesome post. In it he included a link for a video podcast show call Geek Week. Where has this show been all my life?! Very kewl, very geeky, very ZDNet-before-turning-into-T... The latest episode is from July 17th, but its still funny as hell...especially the Spiderman piece and the hilarious action figure segment (watch the whole thing through...trust me). Hopefully I didn't jump on this ......

IE7 Scares Me

I've done some sites in ASP.NET 2.0 now, and they look great....in IE 6. But now that Microsoft is getting ready to release IE 7, testing those same sites isn't having the same happy effect anymore. One site I worked on has a piece that outputs a dynamically created HTML table, with links and whatnot. In IE 6.0, the page grows properly, so the user scrolls down the page to see the rest of the table. In IE 7.0, it doesn't. The table gets cut off where the Master Page footer starts. Not good. I have ......

Deadmines Done...Almost

Last night I teamed up with some lvl 18 - 22 players for some Deadmine lovin'. It's amazing how much easier the Deadmines are when you've spent time offing baddies in Duskwood (the area, not the server...although that's where I play). However, I feel I must comment on an aspect of the game that annoyed me a bit. You see, before you can get to the boss of the level, you have to take on the mini-boss, who happens to be a Tauren called...wait for it..."Mr. Smite". Wow. That name is just awesome...seriously...like ......

CFL Week 11 Recap, Week 12 Predictions

Gonna make this quick...busy busy busy. I was off a bit on my picks for last week. Montreal dropped their third straight, but I'm very hopefull that the recent addition of A. Belli from the Ti-Cats will help booster their D. Hamilton I've given up all hope on. I really thought that maybe, just maybe, they'd be able to pull it together for the Sask game, but they didn't even show up. The game turned into more of a "Will SK be able to break 50 points?!" than any interest in the Ti-Cats coming back. ......

The Mad Mexican Inspires Paul Tracey

Yes, after the Mad Mexican left his mark on Montreal, Paul Tracey realized that to get over with the Montreal crowd he would have to don the mask to become "Captain Montreal"!Soon everyone in Montreal will be wearing masks...EVERYONE! It's a new fashion craze! D ......

Life

I'm having another of those “midlife crisis” moments lately. Just a relative “Where am I going, where did I expect to be, what are my goals for the next 10 years, and what does it matter in the grand scheme of things”. I think that at 30 (not there yet btw, still holding on to my 20's for another few months) I thought I'd be more knowledgable about business...but working for a company that tries hard to run things properly, I've realized that my last half-decade in IT has ......

WoW Gaming Group Tonight?

Anyone interested in getting together online for some major levelling and quest completion (seriously, I really would LOVE to march through the Deadmines with just a huge group of people instead of always relying on a 40+ character to just clear the way first), ping me tonight. Remember that the GWB guild plays on Duskwood, and my character's name is Kindika.

CFL Week 11 Predictions

We've got three games on the slate for this week: Montreal over CalgarySure Montreal is on a two game losing streak, but that ends tonight. Mathews is a winning coach, and he has another winning team...neither will take the two game losing streak as acceptable, and a three game streak is out of the question. Calgary is a great team though, but I think emotion will win out in this one. Toronto over WinnipegHealthy Damon Allen, John Avery, and a whole lotta confidence.Injured starting QB, injured Milt ......

Hello Onfolio, Goodbye Flock

So everyone is talking about Live Writer and how amazing it is blah blah blah. Yeah, we get it...Live Writer is awesome, I agree. But there's another tool that's very kewl as well that comes with Windows Live Toolbar (something that you can have installed when installing Live Writer). The app is called Onfolio, and its an add in that basically kicks the living bejeesus out of the native Feed support in IE 7.0. I actually was using Flock as my aggregator, but it was a pain to switch back and forth ......

I had that dream again...

I don't know why, but every now and again I have this reacurring dream. Now, I don't mean to brag or anything, but I was pretty cat's ass as a waiter back in my college days. And although they seem to be a favorite target of Saturday Night Live and other comedy shows, Olive Garden gave me my first real break as a server. Some consider the chain to be the "McDonalds of Italian", but let me tell you: working for a company that has high standards for cleanliness and procedures is way better than working ......

Sure you can code...but can you manage your finances?

I had an interesting discussion over the last couple of days with some colleagues around whether businesses should be allowed to request a credit check of potential employees. The one argument on the business side is that businesses need to know whether the people being hired are able to manage their own resources, which is an indicator of maturity and responsibility in managing the resources of the business. Fair enough. But what about the situation where a poor credit rating is a result of extenuating ......

First Thoughts on Madden 07

Just like the man who returns to the upscale whore knowing that there's something dirty about what he's about to do, so it was with me and Madden 07 today. Let me be frank: I'm still very bitter about the exclusive EA license granted by the NFL, and the corresponding loss of the amazing NFL 2KX franchise. However, I need my football fix, and Blitz: The League just isn't going to do it. So I turn to EA and their Madden franchise for football satisfaction. I'm not going to bemoan Madden 06; its gone, ......

Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Sometimes we have to do tough things...we need to be honest about our feelings and what's truly in our heart. I had to do that today. It was tough...there were tears...and in the end, I hope that we can still be friends, even though I know it'll be a while before the hurt goes away. I think the news was received pretty good though. “Look, its not you,” I started with. “It's me. Every time around this year I have to switch my focus...try something new...and I just don't think I'm ......

Gimme another bowl of AppleJax!

This article is talking about how "Atlas" won't be the final name for Microsoft's AJAX-based technology. They're requesting the community suggest options for the name, and I gotta tell you that I LOVE this one: Asynchronous POST Platform Leveraging Enterprise JavaScript And XML (APPLEJAX) That's just priceless! We need to bond together, fellow web-geeks, and push this through! This could be the coolest name to come out of Microsoft since...um...since...yeah, well anyway... What we need to do is mass ......

Preaching Lifestyle from Pulpit OK...As long as you back it up

I had a chance to see a Joel Osteen sermon on Sunday. His church looks pretty big, and his ministry seems expansive...Benny Hinn expansive, but I digress... This particular sermon was on dietary lifestyle. He talked about how important it is for us to think about what we eat, and to be aware of the process that goes into processed foods as well as the added chemicals and additives. All of what he said was good and made sense...but the Biblical backup didn't seem right. For instance, he talked about ......

SummerSlam Recap

Tonight was WWE SummerSlam, another monthly pay-per-view for men everywhere to enjoy their favorite soap. Overall, I'd say it was ok...better than the last one (Great American Bash)...and really, the fun aspect isn't so much the quality of the wrestling product as it was getting together with friends and having a guys night However, here's a quick recap of what I thought of the matches (all ratings are out of 5): Chavo Gurerro over Rey MysterioSo...quick recap...Eddie Gurerro, Chavo's uncle, died ......

Oddest Product/TV Show Product Placement

So I'm watching Celebrity Fit Club, and one of their tasks is to do some sort of stress test. The doctor performing the stress test is using a laptop computer, and displaying the results on this big monitor...both emblazoned with the Alienware logo. And the winners of the task get Alienware laptops. How weird is that?! Of all the shows that Alienware could have gotten product placement...a company focussing on video game machines...is on Celebrity Fit Club? The apocolypse is coming...there is nothing ......

CFL Week 10 Predictions

I know this is coming in a little late, especially with one of the three games already finished. But here are my picks for this week. BC over Edmonton (No, really, I would have picked this anyway)BC 30 - Edmonton 28What an excellent game! Well, until the last play. I really thought that Edmonton may have turned a corner, maybe they had figured out how to stop from shooting themselves in the foot in the final minute of their games. But here we were, 2nd down, with 12 seconds on the clock. Instead ......

I don't want to see him on Monday night, you actually want me to PAY for content of him?!

Ok, ok...I admit it...what I'm sure some consider to be one of the greatest American treasures of the last hundred years is, to me, a bit of an annoyance. I'm talking of course about John Madden. Now, I can't take away anything from the man...his career is extraordinary. But seriously when you hear comments like: "When you catch the ball past the marker, you know you've got a first down." Just seems so...so...dumbed down! "What he did was jump up and catch the ball in the endzone, and he gets a ......

There's gotta be a catch...

So let me get this straight: Through their Tour New York program, Infusion Development is going to pay for my move to New York City, hook me up with a gig at an investment bank for a year, pay for my Manhatten apartment and all utilities, give me travel vouchers to fly home, and pay me a competitive salary for the market. What's the catch? I scoured their website looking for the fine print where I had to sell my soul, or my firstborn, or commit to putting half my money into some pyramid scheme. ......

Where to go for Vacation?

So my wife and I decided that we need to start planning a full week of not-working...hopefully around the October time frame. We're trying to think of places that we could go to...although we don't have to go anywhere, but I've caught the travel bug recently having been to places like Seattle, Orlando, and Montreal over the last couple of years. Phoenix sounds nice. Warm, NFL team, great golfing, great scenery, and of course Cooperstown. Atlanta would also be a possible destination. Warm, the BEST ......

CFL Week 9 Recap

I almost forgot to do my weekly CFL recap...maybe because I only got one pic right this week. BC 32 - Bombers 5My Pick: BC :)Seriously no surprise here, except at how horrible the Bombers played. Seriously, even beyond my expectations of suck-ness!Edmonton 24 - Sask 18My Pick: Sask :(Well...Edmonton decides not only to come out swinging, but also play prevent defense in the final minutes of play! Poor Sask...just can't decide whether they're good or not. Toronto 20 - Hamilton 2My Pick: Hamilton :(Well ......

Develop Without Borders Challange

Microsoft is hosting a very kewl contest called the Develop Without Border Challange. The idea is pretty simple: spec out a solution using Office 2007 for a charity of your choice. The prizes are excellent, as the real winner in this is whatever charity you're speaking for, so its not a selfishly motivated contest at all, which is nice for a change (yes, devs do get some prizes...but the cash and technology for the charity makes it the real winner in this). Check out the links below for more info: ......

Go Read Douglas Coupland

I spent Friday and Saturday at Batula Lake in the Whiteshell (if you aren't from Manitoba, that won't mean anything to you...so just know its a lake). My wife and I rented a cabin for two nights, and had a great time of just relaxing and enjoying the quiet outdoors. One of the highlights of the weekend was reading a fantastic book by Douglas Coupland (author of J-Pod) called Hey Nostradamus!. It's a character study of four people who's lives are affected in some way by a high school shooting, but ......

Congrats Jean-Luc!

Congratulations to Jean-Luc David on joining the ranks of Microsoft as a Developer Evangelist here in Canada! Of course, as initiation, the Mad Mexican will be crashing a speaking engagement of yours...but which one will it be?!

;)

Congrats again!

They've released the first of a series of advertising posters for the Edmonton Code Camp coming up in September...not too sure how I feel about this one:

Dino Esposito: Geek to Sheik (sp?)

CFL Week 9 Predictions

Here we are in week 9! Let's make the picks: BC over WinnipegWinnipeg is without their starting QB and their star WR, and last week without those two they lost to the worst in the CFL...and now they're going against the best of the Western division? Even with a backup QB for BC, they look to be better than the Blue. Sask over EdmontonOf course, this assumes that the “good” Sask team shows up. But after getting smited by Calgary last week, they should be looking to run up the score against ......

Edmonton Code Camp Poster

Justice and Donald have been working on some posters for the Edmonton Code Camp coming up in September (you can see them on Justice's blog).

I thought I'd help them out with designing one of my own:

Clerks 2 Review

So I took my wife to see Clerks 2 yesterday. Now, I know what most of you are thinking: you took your WIFE to see this movie? But its ok, she's kewl like that. Also, we went in without any expectations. I've never seen the first Clerks, although I have seen Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (J&SB_SB), and my wife had no idea other than the previews of the film. I'd be curious to know the actual not-swear to swear ratio of this film, because I don't think there was one scene in this movie that didn't ......

CFL: Bad move Adam Rita, bad move.

There's one position that always seems to be Teflon in the CFL: that of the General Manager. In Winnipeg, Brendan Taman's head would have been called for if the Bombers hadn't started with a winning season this year; after seeing Dave Ritchie fired and the horror that was the Bombers under Jim Daly, fans here were starting to wonder if it wasn't the guy overseeing everything that wasn't at fault more than the coaches put in the line of fire. The Toronto Argonauts seem to be going through the same ......

CFL Week 8 Recap

Woo hoo! What a week of football! Here's how the recap: Montreal beat TorontoMy Pick: Montreal :)Damon Allen was supposed to start...but oh my, Spurgyn Wynn is back at the helm...even easier for Montreal. Hamilton beat WinnipegMy Pick: Winnipeg...but its all good! :)Oh my...Bomber fans all over are realizing that the current iteration of their team is a house of cards: take away your top receiver, take away your starting quarterback, and what do you get? A team that can't muster enough offense to ......

Flattery may get you somewhere, but arrogance gets you a blog entry

[Edited Aug 7/06]Remember this post by Chris Williams asking the question about why geeks are sometimes stubborn, or full of themselves, etc.? Well check out the email the leader of the Winnipeg .NET User Group received from a Mr. Right (I've changed his name obviously): [Email Begins]Your next meeting as given on your web-site is six weeks ago. Also, when I hit your web-page, I get an error: Line 599: Object Expected. This isn't on your default main page. It is at the tail end of a script that ends ......

Hoff your Logouts

My buddy Dan sent this to me. I'd just put a link to his blog, but he doesn't have one. Instead he just emails us this stuff...how 2002ish. Pretty funny image though.

CFL Week 8

Week 8 of the CFL season starts tonight, so here are my picks for the week: Montreal over TorontoToronto is still hurting at all levels, and Montreal is...well, Montreal. No contest here. Winnipeg over HamiltonJason Maas should be back in the lineup for Hamilton, but the Bombers look to be the real deal...well, against poor teams at least (they still haven't really been tested by any good teams other than Montreal, and they failed both of those). Winnipeg should take this easily. BC over EdmontonWhich ......

The "Ab" Song

In case you missed it, Trisha posted about the “Ass Song” comment on her blog, and explained that while she was bumping and grinding on some Dragon Bar's dance floor, the guy performing (check his site out here) took notice and wrote a song about her ass...which she quickly flaunted all over GeeksWithBlogs. This got me thinking: would any of the rest of us gotten the same treatment? What if it was Chris Williams, or Brendon Schwartz, or Rob Zelt dancing on that floor...or me? So, I did ......

A few announcements

I wanted to bring attention to a couple of events that have occurred lately. Firstly, congrats to Canadian Developer Evangelist, and pimp-wrestler, John Bristowe on his recent marriage! You can see pics of the wedding and what looks like the honeymoon at his Flickr site here. Secondly, its with great sadness that the Canadian developer community bids a fond farewell to Sasha Krsmanovic. Sasha has been the main contact at MSDN Canada for the past number of years for us user group leaders, and has ......

Intellectual Property Beware

One of the key lines that causes an eyebrow to raise is:
