Fun with SQL 2005 and DTS

Wednesday, February 15, 2006 1:13 PM

I'm working on a project where we wanted to run a DTS package from an ASP.NET page. Problem was that on the test server, it kept erroring out when we'd navigate to the page saying that it couldn't find a reference to

Microsoft.SQLServer.DTS.Runtime

This namespace is actually found in the physical file

Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll

Now, I have no explanation as to why, but when we ran the web app from within the VS.NET IDE, we had no problem accessing it (i.e. through Cassini). But access it outside of that, and for whatever reason it barfs.

Even stranger is that the GAC actually listed Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS in the list. Anyway, the workaround was to copy the file from the Windows\Assemblies folder and paste it into the Bin directory of the web app.

So for anyone else running into a similar problem with DTS, here's one scenario and answer. If anyone understands why this could be happening, drop me a comment.
