When using SQL 2005, you may encounter an error message when trying to connect from Visio or from the SQL Management Studio with an error number 28: Server doesn't support protocol.
This happened to me, and the fix was to re-enable the TCP/IP and Named Pipe protocols. Now, I'm not sure why they were disabled in the first place (something happened while working on it yesterday to flip the switch), but it happened.
