Tech in 5 minutes: The Abstract Factory Pattern
In the sprit of the coming New Year, I thought I’d bring you all this little egg of wisdom. By egg I mean code and by wisdom I mean code I could write before I got hammered. When I go out with the Wife to drink, (Yes she can do more than fill the fridge and get me beer….hell, half the time she doesn’t even get me the beer, I have to get off my ass and do it myself!) We like to drink as much as possible, not only that, but we love to sample every brewery possible. We have a few requirements, for ......

Sharp Rally
Hey everyone. The holidays seem to have caught me in a hiatius of blogging. So as a quick update, here are a few projects i'm playing with. Robo Rally (tm) is a game orriginally published by Wizards of the Coast. I had a chance to play with a few friends of mine a little while back and I was absolutly hooked!! So i'm creating a clone in C#. I'll throw some source code up here in the near future. Whats the best is I'm thinking of doing the UI stuff with WPF. That has yet to see any fruation. The blog ......

Right now your thinking "But Dave, your such an awesome code ninja! how could you allow yourself to be tied down" (you didn't know i was a mind reader too did ya). To that i have to say, My womans job is to: Fill the fridge Get me beer I know, isn't she lucky? I appreciate my wife so much that i will show you here how i have immortalized her in code. Great time last night!
Last night was a very successfull meeting for the AADND membership board. We hashed out some great ideas and everyone contributed allot! An idea I'm personally excited about is the pseudo book exchange. The idea is: You bring in a book, attend meetings, pay dues, anything really and you get points, the points can be used in exchange, at this point, for other books. I personally have some books that I don't use anymore so I think I'll start seeding our library. There's hope that Microsoft will help ......

Tech in 5 minutes : Singleton Pattern
This is for all of you out there who say "I use design patterns that I don't know by name". I'm sure everyone does. So, here is one you probably use in some likeness that you may not have known, and a simple example of how it's used. singleton noun a single object (as distinguished from a pair) a set containing a single member the playing card that is the only card in a suit held in a bridge hand as initially dealt Long and short. I only have/want one of it. Kinda like what you say after your first ......

Interesting
A free e-book for C#/VB Coding standards, from SubDomain can be found here :http://submain.com/blog/Fr... (Referenced from Sreenivas Mogullapalli's blog.) I'd have to say that, while it's a great read (short too, only about 100 pages), and straight to the point, it doesn't really cover anything that most people don't already know. I would suggest, however, if your trying to enforce some kind of coding standard at your work (I went through a ordeal with a company ......

Four days left!
I have four days to finish (read: start) my Christmas shopping! I think I'm just going to go to walmart, walk down the cheap isle and scoop arm fulls of crap into a basket. Pay someone to wrap it for me, and then randomly label each gift with a name. I really think the people who say Christmas has become to commercialized are the people who wait till the last minute to buy their gifts. On another note, Darrell Hawley, Dave Baldwin, and Myself are planning on going down to Grizzly peak tonight (they ......

Tricks of the trade...
The user group is hosting some new ideas. One of which is Visual Studio Tips and Tricks. So, being the vp of AADND I should throw what i have in. Without further adue, here are some of my submissions. (* indicates VS2k5 only). Keyboard shortcuts (Yes i'm so lazy i hate to use the mouse) Shift+Del : Cuts an entire line, putting it on the clipboard, great to use with... Shift+Ins : Pastes the contents of the clipboard to the current position of the cursor.(Actually, i'm not sure what the hell this ......

Ann Arbor Dot Net Developers.
Morning everyone. Who's good with photoshop? The user group is looking at puting together a logo for use on anything that people will let us stick it on. Maybe even a tattoo? Anyway, if your up for a challenge in helping some colorblind anti-designer developers create a magnificant peice of artwork for use as our logo, let me know. Also, it should be know that we are giving away a ZUNE! It's cool, it looks like an iPod, but best of all.... It's Free!!! Here is how it works, come to the meeting, get ......

Another day another peanut...
Well, here we are, monday. I'd rather be at home, working on putting together some toy for Christmas or playing with my own code. But we all have bills to pay right? I got an interesting email reply from Jay Wren friday night in RE: to my command pattern article, i'll share the jucy bits here: You could really take off from here. Things I find interesting fromthis point: Why does abstract Command reference a MyForm instead of just Form- you could write another article explaining how to make thisgeneric ......

Because Josh recorded me...
Josh Recorded me ranting about the command pattern. So I wrote up a little article you can find here. I hope it's relevant and useful. Please let me know what you think, I don't exactly have Shakespearean prose. :) Dave ......

CodeMash!!!
For once I have to put away my technical bigatory and promote something that actually involves *gasp* Java! heres a quickie: What is CodeMash? CodeMash is a unique event that will educate developers on current practices, methodologies and technology trends in variety of platforms and development languages such as Java, .NET, Ruby and PHP. Held January 18-19, 2007 at the lush Kalahari resort in Sandusky, Ohio, attendees will be able to attend a world-class technical conference amid Ohio's largest ......

Why blog?
Ok. So I’m sitting at the bar waiting for my buddy Josh to show up. Sipping my scotch etc... When he does show up, he whips out his new toy (stop snickering). What I saw was some gadget hooked up to an iPod. Then he stuffs a mic in my face and demands that I talk like he's Castro during the Bay of Pigs. (You can listen here) So I manage to stammer out something short of bizarre about the Command Pattern. All goes well till he starts to ask about my blog, and/or website. What are you thinking?! I ......
