I spent this last weekend at GiveCamp - Ann Arbor helping out charities. If you've never heard of Givecamp, you should dentally check out the link. A Give Camp is a weekend-long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations. This custom software could be a new website for the nonprofit organization, a small data-collection application to keep track of members, or a application for the Red Cross that...
It's that time of year again. Where the snow hasn't quite gone away, and it's still cold as Steve Job's gaze. Which means it must be time for a Day of .Net event! WOOT! I'll be presenting a new talk I've derived. Some of you may remember the XNA presentation I gave for the last DODN in Ann Arbor. Don't worry; my ADD has kicked into overdrive and now i'm off to other sparkly things that are not XNA. For this go-around i'll be giving a new talk that I've wrangled up from the inner most reaches of Reddingdom....
You ever dealt with some ass, where you just felt like applying a title? Well, I sure as hell do. So I have a point of reference, here are some terms you'll see me using occasionally. Software Arsonist: Someone who pushes software out the door so fast that it's bug ridden and prone to fire (see Dry Software). Once the software is under intense fire fighting, the Software Arsonist will delegate others to put the fires out, while they send out massive amounts of email showing how much value they are...
I've been waiting to make an entry about this. My friend Josh Holmes and his Developer Evangelist compatriot Steve Loethen have launched a new series on Channel 9 called Code to Live . The principal of the show is to focus on software engineers who do just that, Code to Live. But more so, code because it's their passion. So it's for all those folks who commit to the community, or even just write code in their spare time. It's actually a pretty neat idea in my opinion. I was pretty stoaked when I...
DoDN Was a awesome frickin' success! Of the 200-250 registrants we had 191 actually show up! or at least 191 name tags were missing....so unless we had a name tag stealing ninja in our midst, I'd say our show was pretty damn awesome. The after party at the Corner Brewery was a blast too. With most of the speakers (including certifiable nut jobs Mark Miller, Dustin Campbell and Keith Elder) it was a riot. We stayed out tell at least 12 swapping stories and drinking plenty of beer. We also gave away...
This has got to be one of the most halirous posts i've read lately: All in RE to software development.. This excrept alone... in businesswe often try other strategies with dead horses, including thefollowing: Buying a stronger whip.Changing riders.Say things like, "This is the way we have always ridden this horse." Just halirous, how many times have your bosses said something similar...
So it's been an eventful few weeks. But finally things have calmed down enough that I can enjoy pawning my thoughts off on you, oh gentle reader. I've gotten some excellent feedback concerning my tech in 5 min. articles. Especially the one on Yield Return, so I'll definitely be writing more as inspiration hits me. What do you guys want to see articles on? I'm planning another patterns and practices one for my next post, but I could be persuaded. My good buddy Josh Holmes (who has an excellent philosophical...
